Look out Healesville, we're back for another set of Nationally Recognised Training at Habitat1 with local trainer Luke - so if you've been thinking about learning to save a life, then now is a good time! 🙌😉

⛑ It's First Aid Friday! ⛑

Today's Topic: Black Eyes 👁

Despite not being the most attractive sight, a black eye is generally a fairly simple injury which can be treated at home with some basic first aid and no long lasting effects (phew!)

Occurring as a result of some type of blunt force which breaks the tiny blood vessels around the eye, resulting in bruising, swelling and discolouration, black eyes are best treated by applying a cool compress to the area for 20 minutes each hour for the first 24 hours (NB: Never place ice directly on the skin; instead, ensure this is wrapped in a sterile cloth). This will help reduce any pain, swelling and bruising.

After the first 24 hours, the cool compress can then be replaced with a warm compress to help increase blood flow to the area and speed up recovery.

Should there be any injury or change to the eye itself, changes to vision, headache or dizziness, be sure to seek further medical advice.

In terms of day to day living, our eyes are pretty important - so remember to always look after yours when you can by always wearing protective eyewear where needed, taking your time to avoid falls and bumps and avoiding high risk activities where possible 😉

⛑ It’s First Aid Friday! ⛑

Todays topic: Duty of Care 👥

It happens when you least expect it - stumbling upon an accident where someone needs emergency medical assistance.
.. but are you legally required to stop and provide such assistance? And should you? 🙄

When it comes to your Duty of Care in providing First Aid assistance, it very much comes down to the environment in which you find yourself.

For an incident which has happened out in the street or in your local community, here in Victoria, there is NO legal obligation to stop and provide assistance. But if you can, surely from a moral perspective you should (and hopefully would? 😉🙌)

In the workplace, it is the exact opposite and you DO have a full legal obligation to stop and provide assistance to another employee, team member, visitor or child who is on your property at any given time 🏢🏫

⛑ It’s First Aid Friday! ⛑

Todays Topic: Sprains and Strains 🦵

Common, sore and easily confused, the signs of a sprain or strain remain largely the same - pain, swelling and bruising, with mobility also often affected.

With a sprain occurring when a ligament (the tough tissue connecting bones to other bones) has been overstretched or torn, another tell tale sign of these include a feeling of joint instability which may be accompanied by a 'popping' sensation.

Strains on the other hand relate to a torn or overstretched muscle or tendon (the soft tissue which connects muscle to bone) with additional symptoms including muscle spasms, cramping or weakness.

For all instances of treating a sprain or strain, remember the RICER method!
✅ R - Rest
✅ I - Ice
✅ C - Compress
✅ E - Elevate
✅ R - Refer or Report

By correctly treating a sprain or strain injury promptly, the risk of further damage can be reduced - allowing you to return to your everyday activities or favourite hobbies sooner 😉

And to help prevent them, remember to always warm up properly before any physical exercise, stretch regularly, maintain good posture and wear protective shoes and equipment when playing high impact sports 🙌
