“But their speech is really clear?”

We hear this one quite a bit, and it’s a good example of why speech and language aren’t quite the same thing.

A child can pronounce their sounds beautifully and still find it difficult to understand instructions, build sentences or explain their ideas. Likewise, a child can have great language skills but find some speech sounds tricky to produce.

Different skills, different difficulties, and sometimes a bit of both.

Here’s a quick breakdown of what we mean when we talk about speech vs language.

Swallowing difficulties aren’t always as obvious as coughing or choking.

Sometimes it’s meals taking much longer than they used to. Avoiding certain foods. Feeling like something gets stuck. Losing weight without meaning to. Or simply finding eating and drinking more tiring or uncomfortable.

These changes can be easy to put down to age, illness or “just being fussy”, but they can sometimes tell us that swallowing needs a closer look.

A Speech Pathologist can assess what’s happening and help make eating and drinking as safe, comfortable and enjoyable as possible.

So, what can you expect from the CAH page?

A bit of education, plenty of practical information, useful resources, and some of the things we come across in our everyday work.

We’ll also throw in a little behind-the-scenes CAH life along the way, because it doesn’t all need to be clinical all the time!

Helpful and informative, easy to understand, and hopefully interesting to read too😇

**WE’RE HIRING!**

Speech Pathologist – Contractor
Community/Mobile | Berwick, VIC

We believe great therapy starts with great clinicians.

At Capstone Allied Health (CAH), we believe the best therapy happens when clinicians are trusted to think critically, work independently and use their professional judgement – not simply meet KPIs or appointment targets.

We’re a growing, clinician-owned speech pathology practice providing community-based services across Melbourne’s south-east. We work predominantly with NDIS participants across the lifespan in homes, schools, kindergartens and community settings.

As demand grows, we’re looking for another Speech Pathologist to join CAH. If you’re an established contractor looking for greater variety, or want to work with a practice that values quality care and professional autonomy, we’d love to hear from you.

THE OPPORTUNITY

A flexible, community-based contractor role servicing Berwick, Cranbourne and surrounding areas.

You’ll have the opportunity to:
• Build a caseload around your availability.
• Work predominantly with paediatric clients, with adult referrals available if desired.
• Deliver therapy across homes, schools, kindergartens and community settings.
• Work across speech, language, literacy, autism, social communication, AAC, adult neuro and dysphagia (where appropriate).
• Develop your clinical interests, with referrals matched to your strengths where possible.

ABOUT YOU

We’re looking for an independent clinician who values high-quality, evidence-informed care and strong relationships with clients, families and multidisciplinary teams.

You’ll need:
• CPSP status with Speech Pathology Australia.
• Confidence working independently in the community.
• Strong communication, organisation and time-management skills.
• Current driver’s licence and reliable vehicle.
• Working with Children Check.
• NDIS Worker Screening Check (or willingness to obtain one).

WHAT WE OFFER

• $105–$125/hour, depending on experience.
• Genuine flexibility around your existing commitments.
• A varied paediatric and adult community caseload.
• Autonomy to practise according to your professional judgement.
• Open, respectful communication with a clinician-owner who understands community practice.
• The opportunity to build a consistent referral base with a growing independent practice.

WHY CAPSTONE ALLIED HEALTH?

There are plenty of contractor opportunities out there. We want to offer more than another list of referrals.

We value clinicians as professionals and believe good therapy comes from clinicians who are trusted to think, collaborate and practise with confidence.

If you’re looking for variety, flexibility and professional autonomy with a practice committed to excellent clinical care and meaningful outcomes, we’d love to hear from you.

🧠💨💬 How do we speak?
Speaking is something most of us do daily, yet the process is incredibly intricate and precisely coordinated.

—>The brain selects the word or message.
—>The lungs regulate airflow.
—>The larynx (voice box) vibrates, generating sound.
—>The tongue, lips, and mouth then mold that sound into distinct speech.

Every word relies on this entire system functioning together. It’s no wonder voice changes, speech difficulties, or neurological conditions can significantly impact communication.

🗣️ Speech is a remarkable motor skill—appreciate your voice.

Ever wondered what your tongue, lips, and vocal tract are doing when you speak? Here’s a fascinating MRI of speech in motion. Every millisecond of sound involves a symphony of precise muscle movements — and when illness or injury affects these, speech therapy helps retrain them.
