Take a breather… your ribs will thank you. 🌬️
Breathing seems simple, but there’s a fair bit of anatomy quietly getting on with things.
Your lungs branch like an upside-down tree on each side of the chest - three lobes on the right and two on the left (to make room for the heart). Around them, your ribs move in a coordinated rhythm to create space. The diaphragm contracts and descends, and the intercostal muscles - the small muscles between each rib - help lift and expand the ribcage. On the exhale, everything recoils and resets. This movement is primarily about oxygen supply, of course, but it also keeps the rib joints, spine, and surrounding muscles mobile.
When breathing becomes shallow or guarded (stress response anyone?) that motion can reduce. The intercostals can stiffen, the diaphragm may not move as freely, and muscles around the neck and shoulders often step in to help. Over time, this can create that familiar sense of tightness or “gripping” through the chest and upper back.
The good news - it’s a two-way street. Free up the muscles, and breathing often improves. Improve the way you breathe, and those same muscles can begin to settle.
One simple idea to explore is breathing into the back of your ribcage. Not forcing it, but allowing the lower ribs to gently expand backwards. This can encourage movement through areas that often stay quite still, and may help reduce that protective tension pattern the body sometimes holds onto.
Because sometimes, easing tension isn’t about doing more - it’s about giving the body a different option. ✨
If you’ve noticed tightness through your chest, ribs, or back, it may be worth exploring further. Call Holistic Bodyworks on 9570 3388 to make an appointment, or drop a 🌬️ if you’re ready to breathe a little easier.

Tiny steps, big discoveries 👶✨
Watching a little one grow is full of wonder - first smiles, first words, first wobbly steps. But from an osteopath’s perspective, there’s even more to marvel at.
Early motor milestones, like bringing hands to mouth, rolling from tummy to back, or reaching for toys, reveal how muscles, joints, and the nervous system are learning to work together. Feeding posture, tummy time, and how babies sleep also play a role in shaping comfort, movement, and early alignment.
Sometimes, subtle signs - like persistent arching of the back or stiffening through the spine during feeding, uneven movements, or difficulty bringing hands together - can indicate a little extra support might help. Our osteopaths gently assess and guide, working to help little bodies move freely and comfortably as they grow.
If you’ve noticed your little one doing something new (or tricky!), drop a 🍼 in the comments and share their milestone moment! Who knows, another member of our community may have experienced the same thing!

Sir William Osler, often called the father of modern medicine was a Canadian physician and one of the founders of Johns Hopkins Hospital in the late 19th century. He revolutionised medical education by emphasising bedside teaching, careful observation, and the importance of understanding the person behind the illness, not just the illness itself. His approach was as much about curiosity, empathy, and listening as it was about science.

At Holistic Bodyworks, this philosophy deeply inspires our work. Every patient brings a unique story: their lifestyle, habits, stressors, and goals all shape how they move, recover, and heal. We don’t just look at a symptom in isolation; we explore how it fits into the bigger picture of a person’s body and life. This approach helps us create care plans that are truly personalised, practical, and sustainable.
It’s a reminder that healing isn’t one-size-fits-all. By seeing the patient, not just the pain, we aim to support bodies, restore function, and empower people to move better and live better.

Call us on 9570 3388 to experience care that considers you, not just your symptoms.

Pelvic power: your body’s hidden shock absorber ⚙️
The pelvic girdle does more than hold things together-it’s a crucial hub that transmits forces between your legs and spine. Every step, jump, or lift sends energy through this structure, making alignment and mobility essential for smooth movement.
The sacroiliac (SI) joints, connecting the pelvis to the spine, play a starring role. If they’re stiff or misaligned, load distribution shifts, and muscles in your lower back, hips, or legs may overcompensate. Over time, this can create discomfort-or even pain-in seemingly unrelated areas.
Tiny adjustments to pelvic position or SI joint mobility can ripple through your posture and movement, easing strain and improving comfort. Think of it as tuning a central gear in a complex machine ⚙️-the smoother it moves, the smoother everything else does too.
Noticing tension or niggles around your pelvis or lower back? Call us on 9570 3388 to make an appointment at Holistic Bodyworks and explore personalised support.

More than 2,000 years ago, Hippocrates described health as a state of balance within the body. 🌿
Often called the father of medicine, he viewed the human system as interconnected - influenced by environment, lifestyle, movement, rest, and the rhythms of daily life.

Osteopathic principles echo this idea. The body is not a collection of isolated parts, but an integrated whole. Structure and function are closely related; when one region is restricted or overloaded, others adapt.

Osteopathic care aims to work with this inherent capacity - using thoughtful, hands-on treatment to support coordination across the whole system 🤲✨

Because health has always been about harmony, not isolation.

If you would like to explore how your body is adapting to the demands of daily life, we would love to help at Holistic Bodyworks. Call us on 9570 3388 to make an appointment.

Ah, that familiar ache you thought you’d shaken off… the one you stretched, heat‑packed and exercised through, only to find it sneaking back the next morning - like a stubborn guest who didn’t get the hint 😔💤

You’re not imagining it. Recurring pain often highlights where tissues, posture, or habits have quietly been compensating. But there is good news - small tweaks in how you sit, stand, sleep, and move can ease that strain, helping muscles and joints share the load more evenly 🌿💪

These lifestyle adjustments complement osteopathic care, supporting your body’s natural resilience and helping you feel more comfortable and balanced day to day 🤲✨

For extra support, ask about a short, personalised home‑program follow-up to keep those aches from returning. Call us on 9570 3388 to make an appointment with one of our osteopaths at Holistic Bodyworks.

Osteokinematics sounds technical, but at its heart it simply means the movement of bones at a joint.
The word comes from the Greek osteon, meaning bone, and kinesis, meaning movement. Together, they describe the visible angles and arcs your joints create when you bend, twist, reach, or walk 🚶‍♀️
Every time you lift your arm, roll your shoulders, squat down, or turn your head, you are expressing osteokinematics. It is the outward, observable movement we can see and measure.

Why does this matter? Because the quality of those movements influences posture, comfort, and performance. If a joint does not move through its natural range, nearby muscles and tissues often compensate. Over time, that may contribute to stiffness, reduced efficiency, or discomfort.

Curious about your movement story? We would love to explore it with you at Holistic Bodyworks. Call us on 9570 3388 to make an appointment.
