Four weeks until the 2026 AAPM National Conference in Brisbane. If travel is part of your plan, now is the time to sort the details.

A few things worth doing this week:
⭐ Book flights and accommodation if you have not already. Brisbane in October fills up fast with conference traffic.
⭐ Decide who else from your team is coming. Two people remember more sessions than one, and it’s more fun with friends.
⭐ Pack layers. Brisbane weather combined with Convention centre air conditioning is a lucky dip!

The sessions are worth the trip. A little planning now means you’ll get to enjoy them stress-free.

Core Principle in practice: Risk Management.

Of the eight AAPM Core Principles, this is the one that is easy to leave for another day, until something goes wrong. A handful of checks, done consistently, catch most of what actually causes trouble.

Five things worth checking every quarter:
⭐ Insurance policies, including professional indemnity and public liability, are current and cover what the practice actually does.
⭐ Incident and complaints registers are up to date, not just started with good intentions.
⭐ Emergency and business continuity plans reflect how the practice runs today, not how it ran two years ago.
⭐ Staff know where the fire extinguishers, first aid kits and emergency exits are, not just that they exist.
⭐ Data backups actually restore, not just run.

None of these take long individually. Skipped together, they add up to real exposure.

If you would rather not build a risk register from scratch, the AAPM member resource library has templates ready to adapt.

It is easy to get lost in the day to day running of a practice and lose sight of the bigger picture.

Adam Slater knows that feeling too. After a heart attack and an unexpected encounter with a sea turtle, he left astrobiological research behind and founded Zero Plastics Australia. His micro recycling facility in Ballarat has already diverted more than 4.7 million plastic lids from landfill, and his Catalyst for Change program has engaged over 8,600 students in waste reduction.

Adam joins us as a keynote speaker at the 2026 AAPM National Conference, sharing a story about purpose, resilience and turning a setback into meaningful change.

Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, 13 to 16 October.

As a Practice Manager, you are often the person your team leans on. The one who notices when someone seems off, and quietly checks in.
RU OK Day is a good moment to turn that same question back on yourself. Not the automatic fine thanks, but an honest answer.
If today has been a genuinely good day, that counts too. If it has not, reaching out to someone you trust is a good place to start.
Support is also available through the AAPM Member Assistance Program, Lifeline and Beyond Blue for anyone who needs to talk today.

Five weeks out from the 2026 AAPM National Conference in Brisbane.
Four days built around the work Practice Managers actually do: leadership, people, compliance, finance and the everyday realities of running a practice. Multiple streams mean you can follow the sessions that suit where you are in the role.
If a ticket is not locked in yet, now is a good time.

The 2026 AAPM National Conference wraps up on a high. Comedian, MC and entertainer Merrick Watts joins us as our closing keynote speaker, bringing the laughs after three big days of learning, networking and connection.

Best known from Merrick and Rosso, Merrick has built a career on stage, on screen and behind the mic. Expect plenty of energy and a surprising take on resilience to send delegates home smiling.

Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, 13 to 16 October.

Practice Management is not always treated as its own profession, even though it holds a practice together every day.
AAPM is Australia's only peak body dedicated solely to Practice Management, representing the profession across all healthcare practice settings, including general practice, specialist, allied health, dental, multi-disciplinary and more.
That means a professional home built specifically around the work Practice Managers actually do, with standards, education and community designed for the role, not borrowed from clinical or admin frameworks that do not quite fit.

Ask a Practice Manager who has been to the AAPM National Conference before, and they rarely talk about the sessions first.

Three things attendees tell us they take home every year:
⭐ The people. A room full of people who understand the job without you having to explain it.
⭐ The reset. Time out of the practice to think about the work, not just do it.
⭐ The practical takeaways. Ideas you can actually use on Monday, not notes that gather dust.

The learning matters. But it is the connection and the perspective that bring people back.

The 2026 conference runs 13 to 16 October in Brisbane. Registrations are open now at https://www.aapm.org.au/eventdetails/39252/2026-aapm-national-conference

There is no shortage of things landing in your inbox. Two to look out for are: The Practice Space and the Practice Manager Journal, both included in AAPM membership.

The Practice Space arrives fortnightly with the updates worth knowing, from sector changes to member news and the practical things that affect how you run your day.

The Practice Manager Journal lands quarterly for the deeper reads, the kind you actually want to sit down with rather than skim.

Worth a quick check that both are reaching you. If they are not, update your details at aapm.org.au so nothing slips past.

You could spend an hour Googling whether you are handling a staffing situation correctly. Or you could ask someone who already knows.

The AAPM HR Advisory Service is one of those member benefits that quietly earns its keep. Members call about the everyday and the awkward: underperformance, difficult conversations, award interpretation, restructures, and the situations that do not fit neatly into any policy.

Instead of second-guessing, you get a steer from someone who knows the territory. That is the difference between guessing and getting it right the first time.

People management is one of the hardest parts of the role. You do not have to work it out alone.
