they work! Before founding Core Health Consulting in 2007, Tammy Farrell spent 10 years working in intensive care and cardiac cath labs as a registered nurse. Working in those environments it was clear that many people simply didn’t understand how their bodies worked. Patients were arriving in intensive care after months of suffering symptoms that could have been managed much earlier. After the sudden death of a friend Tammy quit nursing and began educating people and businesses about health and wellness. Since then we’ve helped thousands of employees take action, seek help and regain their health through a range of health promotion programs that really work. We are passionate about health and wellness education and would love to help your workplace become healthier too, so, give us a call today on 1300 663 062 and let Core Health Consulting help your workplace become fitter, healthier and more productive!

Most mental health challenges do not start with a crisis. They start with small, observable changes.

Training helps people feel confident noticing these signs and responding safely.

I’m Tammy Howell, registered nurse, mental health trainer and founder of Core Health Consulting. I help Australian businesses support safer, healthier and compliant teams at work.

Are people in your workplace confident recognising early signs?

At Core Health Consulting, our work is grounded in care and a genuine commitment to safety where it matters most.

It's never about ticking boxes or rolling out generic workplace wellbeing programs. It’s about delivering practical mental health training that people can understand, relate to and actually use in real working environments.

From Mental Health First Aid and fatigue management through to longer-term support programs, the aim is always the same: increase health literacy, reduce risk, and ensure people feel supported to keep working safely and sustainably.

Fun fact about tough teams. They've usually had training on what to do when pressure hits.

Because resilience is not about being "tough". It is about having the skills to respond well under pressure and recover properly.

Structured resilience training helps protect mental health before burnout or injury occurs.

It started with a simple headache. I was working as a nurse in the cath lab, surrounded by brilliant colleagues - people who knew the human body inside out. Or at least, we thought we did.

One of my close friends, a colleague, had been having these nagging headaches for a while. Nothing that seemed alarming. We joked about stress, caffeine, long shifts - the usual.

One Saturday morning, his partner popped out for milk and bread. When they came home, he was gone. A brain aneurysm. Completely undetected.

I’ll never forget that moment. The disbelief. The heartbreak.

That was a turning point.

I couldn’t shake the thought: How many other people don’t understand their bodies well enough to notice when something’s wrong?

I decided I couldn’t just keep treating illness. I wanted to prevent it.

That was a major factor in founding Core Health Consulting.

I built it to help people - especially those in high-risk industries like mining, construction, and trades - understand the signals their body sends long before crisis hits. Because knowledge creates power. And prevention saves lives.

Nearly two decades later, that mission still drives me. Every workshop, every health program, every conversation is a chance to make sure another person doesn’t experience what that Saturday morning brought to my friend.

One-off mental health training does not create confidence, capability or compliance.

Teams change. Pressures shift. Mental health risks evolve. Without continued support and refreshers, early warning signs are missed and leaders are left unsure how to respond when it matters most.

Under Australian WHS laws, organisations are required to manage psychosocial hazards such as workload, fatigue, bullying and poor support.

Ongoing Mental Health First Aid training helps demonstrate practical action and supports safer, healthier and more compliant workplaces.

Mental health incidents are easier to prevent than to manage later.

Mental Health First Aid gives teams the skills to recognise early signs, respond appropriately and reduce risk before issues escalate.

It supports individuals and strengthens compliance at the same time.

Seventeen years ago, I found myself on site, talking to crews about something most of us were never taught: our own health.

In mining, construction and the trades, you know your gear inside out. But when it comes to understanding fatigue, stress or even the basics of how our bodies work, it’s often ignored until it becomes a crisis.

That’s why I wrote my book, The Real Man’s Toolbox.

It was my way of putting practical, down-to-earth health knowledge into the hands of Aussie blokes in a language that made sense.

Since then, I’ve worked with thousands of leaders and workers across Australia delivering programs on general health, mental health, fatigue and resilience that cut through and make a difference where it matters most: on the ground.

I’ve seen the culture shift.

From silence to open conversations. From stigma to support. From risk to resilience.

Having an Employee Assistance Program is great, but it’s not enough anymore.

Under the WHS Psychosocial Code of Practice, you have a legal obligation to actively identify and manage risks like:

⚠️ Fatigue
⚠️ High job demands
⚠️ Low support
⚠️ Poor job clarity
⚠️ Workplace conflict

An EAP is reactive. It waits for someone to put their hand up.

But by then, the damage is often done - in the form of injuries, stress claims, or lost productivity.

What you really need is prevention.

That’s where Core Health Consulting steps in.

We deliver practical, no-BS programs like:

✔️ Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) – Giving your leaders tools to respond early

✔️ Fatigue & resilience training – Built specifically for mining, construction, and trades

✔️ CHAP – A telehealth-based workplace health program for early intervention

Let’s go beyond the bare minimum and actually protect your crew before stress turns into serious harm.

With Core Health on your team? You’re meeting your WHS duties and supporting your people.

You rolled out Mental Health First Aid. Your team is trained. But now what?

Awareness is a powerful first step, but without a follow-up plan, things fall flat:

- Mental health champions feel isolated
- Confidence drops without ongoing support
- Systems aren’t in place to manage real risks like fatigue, burnout, or recovery

That’s where Core Health steps in.

After MHFA, Core Health helps you build a culture of care with:

1. CHAP - confidential health support and telehealth for injured or struggling staff

2. Manager coaching - so your leaders feel confident, not out of their depth

3. Workshops on fatigue and psychological safety - made for tough, high-risk worksites

4. Tools for culture change - not just awareness, but action

5. Practical resources - kits, posters, and on-site prompts to keep things top of mind

6. 12-month wraparound programs - because real change takes time

Core Health turns your MHFA investment into something that lasts: safer people, stronger teams, and compliance you can stand behind.
