Yesterday I shared why taking bigger breaths isn’t always the answer when you’re feeling stressed or overwhelmed.

Today, let’s make it practical.

For the next 30 seconds, try this:
- Breathe through your nose.
- Let your shoulders soften.
- Relax your jaw.
- Allow your breath to become a little quieter.
- Reduce the effort by just 5%.

Notice that I didn’t say breathe deeper.

I didn’t say fill your lungs completely.

I didn’t say force a long exhale.

Just soften.

Many of us spend our days rushing, bracing, and pushing through. Our breathing often reflects that.

Learning to notice and gently reduce unnecessary effort is one of the simplest ways to support your nervous system
throughout the day.

This is what building a breathing toolkit looks like.

Not complicated techniques.

Simple skills that you can use in real life when stress, pressure, or overwhelm show up.

Try it and let me know what you notice.

“I’ve slept every night for the last two weeks - for the whole night!!”

After just two weeks of supporting nasal breathing during sleep with mouth tape, a client recently shared that they’re sleeping more consistently, experiencing fewer disruptions throughout the night, and waking up feeling noticeably more refreshed.

It might seem like a small change, but how we breathe during sleep can have a significant impact on sleep quality, recovery, energy levels, and how we feel during the day.

If you wake up tired, sleep with your mouth open, snore, or find yourself relying on coffee to get going each morning, your breathing may be worth exploring.

And if you’re the person lying next to the snorer... this one’s for you too. 😉

If you’d like to learn more about functional breathing, nasal breathing, and whether mouth taping might be appropriate for you, send me a message.

Please note: Mouth taping isn’t suitable for everyone and it’s important to understand when and how to use it safely.

STOP TRYING TO TAKE BIGGER BREATHS.

It sounds counterintuitive, but when we’re stressed, anxious, or overwhelmed, taking bigger breaths isn’t always the answer.

In fact, overbreathing can make things worse.

When we breathe more than our body needs, we lower carbon dioxide levels in the blood. While carbon dioxide often gets a bad reputation, it’s actually essential for helping oxygen move from the bloodstream into the brain, muscles, and tissues.

This is known as the Bohr Effect.

When carbon dioxide drops too low, oxygen delivery becomes less efficient. The result? A nervous system that stays on high alert, racing thoughts, brain fog, tension, and feelings of anxiety.

As breath educator Patrick McKeown says:

“The more you breathe, the more your body is being starved of oxygen. Your brain is being starved of oxygen, and this contributes to anxiety, depression and stress.”

Sometimes the most supportive thing you can do for your nervous system isn’t to breathe more.

It’s to slow down.

To soften.

To create a little more space between each breath.

The goal isn’t bigger breathing.

The goal is more efficient breathing.

* Less effort.
* More oxygen.
* A calmer mind and body.

Have you ever noticed yourself taking big sighs or deep breaths when you’re stressed?

My breathwork training taught me about the connection between the breath and the nervous system, and it completely changed the way I understand stress.

For years, I thought feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, anxious, or constantly “on” was something I just had to manage.

What I didn’t realise was that my breathing patterns were often reinforcing the physical state I was trying to escape.

Learning how the breath influences the nervous system changed everything.

Not because it removed the challenges from my daily life. Yes, I still have a family, pets, work etc!

But because it gave me a way to work with my body instead of against it.

Now, one of the first places I look when someone tells me they’re feeling stressed, burnt out, disconnected, or stuck is their breath.

Because sometimes the most powerful shifts begin with something we’ve been doing all along.

Curious about what your breath might be telling you? Send me a message.

What corporate breathwork actually looks like

When people hear breathwork, they often assume it’s intense, emotional, or something that takes people out of their day.
That’s not the approach I bring into workplace settings.

These sessions are:
• practical
• grounded
• immediately usable

We focus on simple tools people can use:
• during meetings
• at their desk
• before difficult conversations
• when stress levels rise
• under ongoing pressure

No intensity.

No pushing.

Just practical techniques that support nervous system regulation, focus, communication, and wellbeing at work.

This isn’t about stepping away from work.

It’s about giving people tools they can use within it.

A SIMPLE TOOL - EMAIL APNEA & 4:6 BREATHING

A simple tool for the moments you catch yourself holding your breath at your desk.

Email apnea is the unconscious habit of shallow breathing or breath holding while reading and responding to emails. Over time, it can increase stress, tension, fatigue, and nervous system overload.

Try this:
4 count inhale
6 count exhale

Even 60 seconds can help create more calm, clarity, and regulation during the workday.

Save this for your next inbox spiral, and share it with someone who spends their day behind a screen.

Why stress is affecting your team more than you think.

Stress doesn’t just show up as feeling overwhelmed.
It impacts focus, communication, decision-making and the way people respond under pressure.

When the nervous system is dysregulated, people move into reactivity.
That’s when mistakes happen, conversations become harder, and clear thinking starts to decline.

Most workplaces try to solve this at a performance level.
But often, it’s a physiological issue first.

You can’t out-perform a dysregulated nervous system.

This is why nervous system regulation matters — not just for wellbeing, but for healthier teams, clearer communication and more sustainable performance.
