Our Culture Care Connect Men's Three River Fishing group had a beautiful day out on the Wambool (Macquarie River) at Mookerawa Dam recently. The men enjoyed each other's company and shared yarns - all while being out on Country. Plenty of laughter was had and an added bonus was that a few fish were caught and taken home to be eaten.

If you are interested in becoming a participant of this group you will be required to become a primary client of OAMS, have an updated 715 Aboriginal & Torress Strait Islander Health check - if you don't identify you will need a General Health check and also, if applicable, a Mental Health Care Plan. This group runs every Monday fortnightly and is a full day activity. Transport is provided as well as lunch and drinking water.

Our Culture Care Connect Su***de Prevention & Aftercare team recently caught up with Coley, Manager of the Bathurst Fishing Shed, and we're excited to be working together over the coming months to promote mental health awareness. This will include activities around R U OK? Day on 10 September and Mental Health Month throughout October.

To support these conversations, we've put together two OAMS backpacks filled with information, resources and merchandise relating to Su***de Prevention and Alcohol & Other Drugs support. These packs will be given away to help raise awareness of mental health challenges and the supports available within our community.

We know that self-harm and su***de continue to have a significant impact on regional communities. In 2025, NSW recorded 925 suspected or confirmed deaths by su***de. Men continue to be disproportionately affected, accounting for around 75% of su***de deaths and dying by su***de at approximately three times the rate of women.

We also know that spending time fishing with family, friends and community members can help reduce feelings of isolation, strengthen connections and build supportive networks. While awareness days are important, we'd like to encourage everyone to check in with each other regularly and start conversations every day, not just on the dates marked on the calendar.

We’re excited to officially announce the launch of the StrongMind Men’s AOD Program in Orange NSW, delivered in partnership with Orange Aboriginal Medical Service.

Running from 7–11 September, this week-long program will provide men in the Orange community with access to group workshops, 1-1 support and practical tools around drugs, alcohol, gambling, harmful behaviours, emotional wellbeing, relationships and accountability.

If you’re a man in Orange who knows something needs to change, but you’re not sure where to start, this program is for you.

You don’t need to have everything figured out. You just need to be willing to turn up, be honest about what’s going on and start looking at what needs to change.

The aim is simple, create a safe, supportive space where men can build insight, take accountability and begin making practical changes that can improve their lives, relationships and families.
