There's a myth that bariatric surgery is only for when 'everything else has failed.'
In reality, for many people living with obesity, surgery is a proactive, evidence-based medical intervention, considered earlier as part of a broader treatment plan alongside nutrition, movement and psychological support.
Obesity is a chronic medical condition.
Like any chronic condition, earlier, well-informed intervention can reduce the risk of it progressing, including its impact on things like type 2 diabetes, joint health, sleep apnoea, and cardiovascular risk.
That doesn't mean surgery is right for everyone, or that it works the same way for every person. It's one option, among several, that may be appropriate depending on individual health history, goals and eligibility.
It's a decision made together with your medical team, and certainly not something to self-diagnose from social media.
If you've been told (by yourself or someone else) that surgery is something you 'haven't earned the right to consider yet' — that's not medical advice, that's a myth.
Individual results and suitability vary, and a proper assessment is the only way to know what's right for you.
