I have been a little quiet here lately but I was keen to share a little professional milestone. I’ve been working hard and pleased to announce I’ve completed the process to become an Accredited mental health social worker with the AASW.

It’s involved a lot of learning, reflection and persistance and growth and I couldn’t of done it without my peers and supervisors who encouraged me along the way when I needed it 💛 so thank you Hannah + Team | Perth Play Therapy + Online Parenting Support Simone ~ AMHSW + Registered Play Therapist and Nat my supervisor

For clients and families this means I will be able to provide a Medicare rebate for mental health supports to those with a mental health care plan.

🔔Parents: have you heard the phrase “connection beats correction” and wondered what that actually looks like in real life?

Because when your child is melting down, shutting down, or testing the boundaries… connection can feel like the last thing available.

So, let’s unpack it together.

❌ MYTH: Connection is about being permissive or “letting everything slide”.
✅ TRUTH: Connection before correction is about meeting your child’s nervous system before trying to address their behaviour.

It might look like:
✅ Getting close instead of raising your voice
✅ Naming feelings before setting limits
✅ Using play, curiosity, and presence rather than consequences alone
✅ Understanding what your child’s behaviour is communicating beneath the surface (because all behaviour is communicating something).

When children feel safe, seen, and understood, their capacity to cooperate, regulate, and repair grows.

🔑Here are a few gentle holiday activities that support connection, co-regulation, and emotional safety:

🎨Create a shared art space: Set up a small table with crayons, paper, and playdough. Sit alongside your child and follow their lead, no agenda, no instructions.

🌲Go on a sensory nature walk: Notice sounds, textures, colours. Let your child show you what catches their eye. This naturally slows the nervous system, creates moments of awe and wonder, and is a shared experience to connect over.

📚Storytelling ritual: This can include picture books, made-up stories, or “remember when” moments. Storytime builds connection and emotional language.

🧩10-Minute playtime: A short, intentional burst of child-led play can shift the whole tone of the day.
