For years I thought I was just bad at resting. Turns out my body was trying to tell me something, and I wasn't listening.

Here they are...

1. If you wake up tired no matter how much you sleep, that's not "just life." Your body never got the message that it's safe to switch off.

2. If you get a second wind at 10pm after dragging yourself through the day, that's not energy. That's your stress running on its last reserves.

3. If you scroll in bed for an hour when you're exhausted, that's not laziness. It's the only time all day that feels like yours.

4. If your mind gets loud the second the lights go off, that's every feeling you pushed aside all day, finally catching up.

5. If a holiday helps for a week and then it's all back, rest can't fix stress you walk straight back into.

6. If you snap at the people you love most, that's not who you are. That's a body with nothing left to give.

7. If you keep saying "I'll deal with it when life calms down," life won't calm down until you do.

Read that list again.

None of this means something is wrong with you. It's your body asking for help.

Number 7 was me for years. At 37 I was the most burnt out I've ever been, still promising myself I'd slow down after "this busy season." I spent three years and over $50,000 on psychotherapy, naturopaths and rest before I understood what was really going on.

That's the part nobody tells you: you don't heal by waiting for a quieter life. You heal by changing what happens in the moment the stress hits.

Recognise: Notice which of these 7 shows up first for you today. That's your body's signal.

Respond: When it shows up, ask yourself, "What do I actually need right now?"

Release: Before bed, put your phone in another room and breathe out slower than you breathe in, 5 times. It tells your body the day is over.

This isn't about leaving your job, your relationship, or your life to fix this. It works exactly where you already are.

Comment YES if any of this was you, and I'll send you the method on how to finally start healing from burnout and join 1000s of women & men who finally said YES to themselves. 🤍

Here is the truth...

Why Rest Still Feels Hard — Even on the Weekend

If you’re frustrated that you need another slow weekend, another day of doing less than you planned, another round of “I should be productive but I’m exhausted”…

Here’s the truth most high‑achieving leaders never hear:

Your burnout recovery will always take longer than the time it took to burn out.

We don’t get overwhelmed overnight.
We get overwhelmed through years of pushing, coping, bracing, surviving.

So of course your body is asking for more rest than you’d like — it’s trying to catch up.

Recognise

You’re not lazy.
You’re not unmotivated.
You’re not “falling behind.”

You’re healing from a nervous system that’s been running on emergency mode for far too long.

Respond

Rest isn’t the enemy — it’s the medicine.
And the more you actively send signals of safety to your nervous system, the faster your recovery becomes.

Not just slowing down, but daily work on what is causing you stress, through responding to stressfull situations by asking yourself:

What can I do about this and what can I do about the things I cant change?

By using grounding, micro‑pauses, somatic release — the cues that say:
“You’re safe now.”

That’s what accelerates healing.

Release

Let go of the belief that you should be “back to normal” by now.
Ignoring this step only compounds the timeline — I learned that the hard way.

You've read a hundred posts like this one.
Saved a few.
Changed nothing.

This one's different — it's the exact tool that helps you catch stress in the moment, before it becomes another year lost to burnout.

Less time spinning in the same loop.

Less money on things that don't touch the real problem.

Less energy wasted on stress that was never actually about what you thought it was.

It won't fix years overnight.

But it's the tool I wish I'd had three years ago — and it's yours in the next five minutes.

Comment TOOLKIT if this is the one you actually act on.♥️

The list ⏬️

But first make sure you are following Jelena Ilic | Leadership Wellbeing mentor for more posts on healing burnout..

1. Waking up tired, every single day
2. Shoulders up by your ears without noticing
3. Coffee to start the day, w**e to end it
4. Snapping over something small, then hours of guilt
5. Sitting on the couch but never actually relaxing
6. Forgetting simple things and laughing it off
7. Saying "I'm fine" before you've even checked

Read that list again.

None of these feel like an emergency on their own. That's exactly why they're so easy to ignore.

I ignored all 7 for years. I had a career I'd spent 17 years building, a family who needed me, and no time to fall apart. So I called it normal. At 37 I was the most burnt out I've ever been. Then I spent three years and over $50,000 on psychotherapy, naturopaths and rest, waiting to feel like me again.

That's the part nobody tells you: the signs don't go away when you rest. They go away when you start catching them in the moment they show up.

Here's the recipe, the same one I still use:

Recognise: Pick the one sign from this list that shows up first in your day. That's your early warning. When you feel it, say it out loud: "I'm overwhelmed right now." Naming it takes some of its power away.

Respond: Ask yourself, "What's the one thing that actually has to happen in the next hour?" Do that. Everything else can wait.

Release: Take a 5-minute walk without your phone. Let your shoulders drop and your arms swing. Your body needs somewhere for the stress to go.

This isn't about leaving your job, your relationship, or your life to fix this. It works exactly where you already are.

Share this with someone who just ticked off more than 3 of these.

Comment YES if any of this was you, and I'll send you the method on how to finally start healing from burnout and join 1000s of women & men who finally said YES to themselves. 🤍

Here they are...

But first make sure you are following Jelena Ilic | Leadership Wellbeing mentor
for more posts on healing burnout..

1. Wake up tired and stop expecting anything else

2. Carry your shoulders up near your ears and only notice when the headache starts

3. Need coffee to get going and something to switch off at night

4. Snap over something small, then spend an hour feeling guilty

5. Sit on the couch but never actually relax

6. Forget simple things and joke about it, even though it scares you a little

7. Say "I'm fine" before you've checked if it's true

Read that list again.

Every single one of those is your body adapting to more than it was ever meant to carry.

My back gave out three times in three months. Three times I ended up on the floor, unable to move. And each time, as soon as I could stand, I told myself it was normal. Busy mum. Getting older. Everyone's tired.

None of that was true.

It came from 17 years of exactly this list, quietly building underneath a life that looked completely fine.

That's the part nobody tells you: burnout doesn't arrive one day. It moves in slowly, until tired, tense and snappy feel like who you are, and you stop questioning it.

Here's the recipe, the same one I still use:

Recognise one thing on this list you've been calling normal. Just one. Naming it is where it starts to change.

Respond by asking what your body needs in that moment, and give it the smallest version. Two minutes counts.

Release the idea that everyone lives like this, so you should too. Common isn't the same as normal.

This isn't about leaving your job, your relationship, or your life to fix this. It works exactly where you already are.

If you know someone who is struggling with burnout, make sure you share this reel with them and

for more posts on healing burnout..

1. She does more. She takes on extra, says "I've got it," and looks like she's coping better than ever.

2. She goes quiet. She stops telling you about her day, because explaining it feels like one more job.

3. She gets sharp. Small things set her off. You think she's angry at you. She's exhausted and has nothing left to soften it with.

4. She stops asking. She doesn't ask for help anymore, and you take that as a good sign. She's given up expecting it.

5. She goes flat. No fight, no tears, no laughing at the things she used to love. She's still doing everything, and she isn't really there.

Read that list again.

Every single one of those is her holding it together so nobody else has to worry.

I went through all five. My husband is a good man, and he missed them, because I was still cooking, still working, still showing up. Then my back gave out for the third time in three months. He sat on the bed and said, "It's okay. I've got this. You really need to rest." I burst into tears.

None of that was about one bad week.

It came from 17 years of exactly this list, quietly building underneath a life that looked completely fine.

That's the part nobody tells you: a burnt out wife doesn't fall apart. She keeps going, and the quieter she gets, the further along she is.

Here's the recipe, the same one I still use:

Recognise which stage you're in right now. Name it to yourself, then name it out loud to him.

Respond by asking for one specific thing. "I need you to own dinner on Tuesdays" works. Hints don't.

Release how he does it. Let him do it his way, and let yourself sit down while he does.

This isn't about leaving your job, your relationship, or your life to fix this. It works exactly where you already are.

Here they are...

1. You linger in your car for a few extra minutes before walking inside — the only stretch of silence you've had all day.

2. You lie down in the middle of the afternoon, not because you're tired, but because you just need everything to stop for a second.

3. You're scrolling at midnight even though your body's begging for sleep, because your mind refuses to switch off.

4. A small noise sets you off, and then you feel guilty for how sharp your reaction was.

5. You lose your train of thought mid-sentence, or blank on something simple, because your mind's carrying too much at once.

6. "I'm fine" comes out on autopilot, even on the days you feel anything but.

7. You catch yourself fantasising about vanishing somewhere quiet for a few days, just to feel like a person again.

8. Things that used to feel effortless now feel like too much, and you can't quite explain why.

9. From the outside, your life looks like it's going well — maybe better than ever. So why does it feel like this on the inside?

This is what high-functioning survival mode looks like.
You keep showing up. You keep performing. You keep holding it together.

Underneath it, your nervous system is running on empty. Live like this long enough, and it starts to feel like your normal. You know you are in burnout but dont know where to start healing it, becuase everything seems to complicated and exausting.

If any of this hit close to home — there's nothing wrong with you.

Your body's just been stuck in stress mode for longer than it should have been.

And the way out isn't pushing harder. It's learning how to gently bring your body out of burnout mode.

So it doesn't take you the next 2 to 3 years to heal ♥️

That's exactly what Recognise. Respond. Release. walks you through

Recognising these signs as real data instead of personal failings, responding to your nervous system instead of overriding it, and releasing the idea that rest is something you have to earn first.

Here they are...

1. If you can't switch off after work, that's not dedication. That's a body so full of stress hormones it has forgotten how to come down.

2. If you push harder when you're exhausted because rest feels lazy, that's not discipline. That's a nervous system that can no longer tell danger from a deadline.

3. If you feel guilty the moment you sit down, that's not high standards. That's a brain that has learnt to treat stillness the same way it treats failure.

4. If you hit a wall out of nowhere, that's not weakness. That's your body pulling the handbrake after years of you ignoring the warning lights.

5. If you feel flat about things you used to love, that's not ingratitude. That's a system so drained it has turned the volume down on everything, the good along with the bad.

6. If you get sick the moment you go on holiday, that's not bad luck. That's your body finally hearing "it's safe now" and letting go of everything it held back while you were coping.

7. If you can't focus for more than 20 minutes, that's not laziness. That's a tired brain rationing the little energy it has left.

8. If you feel more anxious on your day off than at work, that's not your personality. That's a nervous system so used to stress that calm feels like something is wrong.

9. If you've started crying for no reason, that's not a breakdown. That's months of held-in feeling finally finding a way out.

10. If you keep saying "I just need to get through this week," that's not a plan. That's survival mode telling you the finish line is close, so you'll keep running on empty to reach it.

If you saw yourself here, there's nothing wrong with you. You're not weak, lazy or broken. Your body has been in stress mode for far too long.

I lived like this for 17 years, and it took me three years to heal. You don't have to quit your job or change your whole life to start.

Follow Jelena Ilic | Leadership Wellbeing mentor and comment HEAL if 3 or more hit home, and I'll send you my full toolkit for healing burnout. 🤍
