It's a common misconception that vascular diseases only affect the elderly. In reality, factors like genetics, lifestyle, and underlying health conditions can lead to vascular issues at any age.

Early detection and lifestyle modifications can significantly reduce risks.

Ever wondered why someone becomes a vascular surgeon?

For me, it was a combination of factors: the opportunity to work closely with patients, the challenge of managing emergencies, a passion for research, and a personal drive to make a difference.

Each patient is unique, and I believe in tailoring treatments to individual needs. There's no one-size-fits-all approach here.

Even small changes can make a big difference to your vascular health.

Replacing just 30 minutes of sitting each day with light activity—like walking or gentle stretching—can improve blood flow and reduce the risk of heart disease.

It's not about intense workouts; it's about consistent movement. Regular activity helps keep your arteries flexible and supports overall circulation.

Chronic stress doesn't just affect your mind—it impacts your vascular health too.

High stress levels can lead to increased blood pressure and inflammation, which may harm your arteries over time.

Incorporating stress-reducing activities like deep breathing, meditation, or a short daily walk can support your vascular system.

One common cause is carotid artery disease — a narrowing in the major arteries of your neck.

This narrowing is usually due to fatty plaque build-up, and it can reduce blood flow to your brain. Sometimes, it leads to a TIA (mini-stroke) or even a full stroke.

The good news? It can often be picked up early with an ultrasound and treated with medication or surgery.

Don’t wait for a warning sign.

If you’re young, active, and get calf pain while exercising — but scans don’t show a blockage — you might have popliteal artery entrapment syndrome (PAES).

This happens when a muscle compresses the artery behind your knee during movement, reducing blood flow.

It’s rare and often missed. But if recognised early, surgery can relieve the pressure and restore circulation.

Don’t ignore exercise-related leg pain, especially if it improves with rest.

If you often get tummy pain after eating, and it’s making you avoid meals or lose weight, it could be something called mesenteric ischaemia — a condition where the blood flow to your intestines is reduced.

It’s not talked about much, but it’s something we look for in vascular surgery, especially if other causes have been ruled out.

Treatment may involve improving blood supply through minimally invasive procedures like angioplasty or stenting. Early diagnosis is important.

So if this sounds familiar, don’t ignore it — chat to your doctor.

If you have diabetes and a foot ulcer that won’t heal, you might be referred to a vascular surgeon — especially if there’s poor circulation involved.

Sometimes, we use keyhole procedures like angioplasty to open up blocked blood vessels and improve blood flow. In more serious cases, surgery may be needed to bypass the blockage or even remove infected tissue.

The goal is always the same: improve healing, reduce the chance of infection, and help avoid amputation where possible.

Prevention is best — so keep your sugars stable and check your feet daily.

If blood flow to your leg is severely reduced, often due to peripheral artery disease (PAD), you might need a surgical bypass.

This is not the same as a heart bypass. Instead, we create a new route for the blood to travel around the blockage in your leg arteries, usually using a vein from your own body or a special synthetic graft.

A bypass is often recommended if you're experiencing pain even at rest, or have wounds that aren’t healing due to poor circulation. The goal is simple: get more blood to where it’s needed and give your leg a chance to heal.

It's a bigger operation, but for some patients, it can prevent further damage — and even avoid amputation.
