☀️ Sunday Funday! 🎮🕹️

Two of our participants and their mentors met up last Sunday for a fun day out! They kicked things off at Starbucks ☕ before heading into the city for the Pixel Expo.

The day was planned around the participants’ shared interests. With gaming, pinball, vehicles and Star Wars, there was plenty to keep them engaged.

Along the way, there were many opportunities to practice communication, handling money; as they independently purchased their tickets to enter the event, decision making and finding their way around a less familiar place.

It was also great to see the participants spending time together, joining in activities, encouraging each other and making plans to catch up again🙌✨

Culture Isn't Built by Accident 🌟

One of the questions I get asked quite often is, "How do your team all get along so well?" The answer is actually pretty simple. 😊

When I hire people at [MEN]tor, I'm not just looking at qualifications or experience. I'm looking at character. Of course, qualifications matter, experience matters, training matters, but those things can all be learnt. What I can't teach is kindness. I can't teach someone to genuinely care about another person. I can't teach someone to celebrate a participant's wins as if they were their own. I can't teach someone to treat every participant, family and teammate with respect. That's what I look for. Good people, because when you put good people together, something special happens. People enjoy coming to work. They support one another, they celebrate each other's successes, they step in to help when someone needs it, there's no drama, no egos. Just a group of people working towards the same goal. 👥

I genuinely believe that's why our team gets along so well. 🫶

It's also why we've been fortunate to have such low staff turnover in an industry that's known for having some of the highest staff turnover rates. Our participants deserve consistency. They deserve familiar faces. They deserve mentors and counsellors who are around long enough to build genuine relationships.

I'm incredibly proud of the culture we've built at [MEN]tor.

Not because it happened by chance, but because every single person on our team was chosen not just for what they could do, but for who they are.

Culture isn't built by accident. It's built by the people you choose to surround yourself with 🙌 💙

📼 What would the [MEN]tor team look like in the 80s? - PART 2

There’s been a fun 80s nostalgia trend going around social media lately, so we decided to see what the [MEN]tor team would have looked like if we’d all grown up in the 1980s. 😂

We gave AI a little help from what we know about each team member, including some of their personalities, hobbies and interests... and the results are pretty entertaining. 😎

Safe to say, the 80s brought out a very different side of the [MEN]tor team. 😂

Swipe through to meet the rest of our team’s 80s alter egos and see how closely you think AI captured their personalities.

🏋🧘‍♂️Looking after my physical health changed my mental health🧘‍♂️🏋

Growing up, living an unhealthy lifestyle was just normal. Exercise wasn't something I prioritised and neither was nutrition. It wasn't until I got older that I realised I had a choice, I could keep living the way I always had, or I could start building healthier habits that my future self would thank me for.

So I made a decision to take my health a bit more seriously. At first, if I'm being honest, a big part of it was wanting to look better. I wanted to lose weight, build some muscle and feel more confident.

Over the next couple of years, I went from 85 kg to 72 kg, I'm proud of that achievement! But what surprised me most wasn't the physical transformation. It was how much my mental health improved. I had more energy, I slept better, I felt more confident and I handled stress better, and I became far more disciplined, not just in the gym, but in every part of my life.

One of the biggest lessons I've learnt is that physical health and mental health go hand in hand. When I look after my body, my mind benefits too.

That's one of the reasons I encourage the young men we support to find a way to stay active. It doesn't have to be the gym, it could be walking, running, swimming or basketball. Anything that gets you moving! 🏃🚴🏊

Looking after your physical health isn't just about changing the way you look, it changes the way you feel, and for me, that's been the biggest transformation of all🩵

💛 R U OK? Day 💛

Today is a reminder that a simple conversation can make a real difference.

Got a feeling that someone you know or care about isn’t behaving as they normally would? Perhaps they seem out of sorts? More agitated or withdrawn? Or they’re just not themselves. Trust that gut instinct and act on it. By starting a conversation and commenting on the changes you’ve noticed, you could help that family member, friend or workmate open up 🫶

4 Steps of an R U OK conversation...
🖤Ask R U OK?
🖤Listen with an open mind
🖤Encourage Action
🖤Check in

We all have a role to play in looking out for those we care about at home, work or in our community. Ask, 'are you OK?' Because a conversation could change a life.

Our mentors are often quietly working in the background, celebrating every participant’s success, whether it’s a small step forward or a major milestone ✨

These moments are usually shared through little weekly messages within our team, but we thought, why not share them more widely and show just how proud we are of the growth happening every day? 🙌

Here is what one of our support mentors recently shared about a participant:

“Since beginning mentoring in March, this client has made steady progress in his confidence, independence and engagement within the community. He now exercises regularly, attends the gym and shows great motivation to support his well being.

He is also becoming more comfortable expressing his needs, making choices, trying new activities and managing everyday tasks with greater independence.

It has been encouraging and inspiring to see him gradually step outside his comfort zone and take greater ownership of his goals.”

This is why we do what we do, gently encouraging participants beyond their comfort zones so they can build confidence, independence and lasting change.

A strong mentor-participant relationship plays such an important part in making this progress possible. Hearing that his family is also happy with the support he is receiving makes it even more meaningful🥰

⭐ Promotions Should Be Earned, Not Expected ⭐

One of the best parts of running a business is seeing people grow 🩵

When Alby first joined [MEN]tor, he was passionate about helping young men and eager to learn. At the time, he was studying a Bachelor of Psychology and Counselling. Since then, he's continued investing in himself and is now completing a Master of Counselling 🎓

Over time, he consistently proved himself. Not through big speeches or trying to impress anyone, but through the small things that matter. By showing up, building genuine relationships, supporting the team and being someone participants and families could rely on.

That's why promoting Alby wasn't a difficult decision 🙌

It wasn't about how long he'd been with us. It wasn't about ticking boxes. It was about trust.

Leadership isn't a title. It's something you earn through your actions every day 💪

Today, Alby is our second in charge, taking on greater leadership responsibilities within the team.

Seeing him step into that role has been incredibly rewarding because I know he genuinely cares about the young men we support.

I have no doubt he'll continue to grow into an exceptional counsellor and leader, and I'm excited to see where his journey takes him 🩵

As our team continues to grow, that's exactly the kind of culture I want to protect.

We don't promote people because a position becomes available. We promote people because they've already shown they're ready 👏

Congratulations, Alby!🎉This promotion is well deserved, and I'm excited to see what the future holds 🚀

🚗 Another Milestone Achieved! 🎉

A huge congratulations to one of our participants who has officially passed his driving test! 👏🏻🚘

One of his long-term goals is to work towards independent living and gaining his licence is a massive step in the right direction. Having the freedom to get himself where he needs to go opens up so many opportunities, from work and appointments to social activities and managing everyday life independently.

He’s well and truly on the right path towards building the independence and confidence he’s been working towards. We’re very proud to see him ticking off these milestones along the way! 💙

Congratulations! safe driving 🚗💨
