Does multilingualism cause language delays?
The answer is no!
As long as each adult is using their best language, providing their best modelling of the vocabulary, grammar, intonation and cultural cues of that language, it is fine!!
So use your native language with your child.
The rule of thumb is to be consistent - mum speaks Cantonese the best, then she will speak Cantonese with the child most of the time. Dad speaks English the best, then he is in charge of the English department at home.
As to whether the languages used only between the couple, it wouldn't make too much of a difference.
So if you have to use your second language, strive to provide better modelling by enhancing it, otherwise it might be better just to stick with your mother tongue.
So don't be afraid to use multiple languages at home!
(So also don't try and limit the use of English on purpose at home, since English is the main language used in Australia! You don't have to be afraid that your child will forget your language if it is not English...as long as your modelling has been consistent and rich. Limiting use of any language wouldn't benefit much but may in fact affect their learning)
