The State Government has announced that it will extend free flu jabs for ALL West Australians through June in response to rising case numbers and hospitalisations.

As in previous years, over 65 year olds, younger children and those with chronic illness are also eligible for a free vaccination.

The trend so far this year suggests it’s going to be a significant flu season. We would encourage you to consider having a vaccination even if you are in a lower risk group.

Just a reminder that it is influenza vaccine season. Last year was a particularly bad flu season and predications are this year may be similar. We have flu vaccines in stock for all ages and would recommend everyone considers one in the next few weeks. The list below are the government funded ones for those most at risk.

What to do if you need support with your COVID symptoms:

-ensure you have registered your result online (high risk patients will then automatically be followed up by the COVID at home program)

-at Beaumaris Family Practice we can offer video consults to our COVID positive patients. This can be useful in assessing how unwell you are

-respiratory clinics will be able to see COVID positive patients face to face (eg Clarkson respiratory clinic) - call them or book online for an appointment

-if you have chest pain or significant breathlessness or light headedness you are likely to need assessment in ED. An ambulance may be the safest way to get there depending on how unwell you are

-if the Department of Heath has asked you to see your GP for antiviral treatment please PHONE and tell our receptionists. We will accommodate an early review for our patients as this must be started within 5 days of onset of symptoms. This is for patients assessed to be at highest risk.

It may be a good time to consider purchasing an oximeter, blood pressure machine and thermometer. It will be useful if you are having telephone consults when COVID is prevalent. This RACGP guide may help you to continue planning for the next few months. When COVID is prevalent here in WA, our highest risk patients may chose to have phone consults for some of their care, to reduce the risk of exposure. When you have symptoms we will ask that your initial contact with us is booked as a phone consult.

For our patients during the recently announced lockdown for Perth:

-We are still open our normal hours. You can attend your booked appointments (for issues that do not include cough/ fever/ sore throat) as planned

-If it is an issue that can just as easily be dealt with in a phone consult this may be more appropriate given the number of exposure sites in our area. Please contact us to tell us if you would prefer a phone consult. Billing / fees remain similar to a face to face consult.

-If you have respiratory symptoms please get tested as soon as possible and self isolate. A phone consult would be appropriate if you are concerned or need advice. If it is deemed that an examination is needed to determine a diagnosis a plan and possibly a car park consult can be arranged. Please call before entering the practice with symptoms.

-Forms are not required for COVID testing at this time. We would recommend the Western Diagnostics drive through clinic in Joondalup or the testing clinic at JHC

-Ensure all masks are replaced frequently. If possible please use a fresh cloth or surgical mask when attending your appointment as they become ineffective after a short period of time

-Please keep up to date with official vaccine information as it remains an important key to individual and community safety

-Mental Health can be challenging during this time. Please see us if it is impacting you negatively so we can help you get the support you need.

Please look after yourselves, your families and our community.

During the week of COVID lockdown we are still seeing patients for their booked appointments. We encourage you to do a telephone consult if your problem can safely be managed over the phone but face to face is available if it is preferred.

Please book a phone consult rather than face to face if you have any COVID symptoms and we can arrange to see you in a safe way should it be needed.

As per the government guidelines, masks are required at all times within the practice.

Please make sure you still follow up on your important medical issues in a safe way during this time.

If you know someone between 70-79 years old please remind them that they have one more year to have a government funded shingles vaccine on the catch up program. The catch up program ends in October next year.

Shingles is a painful, blistering rash that usually happens on one side of the body. It is a reactivation of the varicella zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox. The Zostavax® vaccine protects against the shingles disease.
