What is the autonomic nervous system?

Your autonomic nervous system is the part of your nervous system that controls the functions in your body that happen automatically.

Things like:
• Breathing
• Heart rate
• Digestion
• Stress responses
• Sleep and recovery

It has two main branches:
⚡ Sympathetic (Fight or Flight)
This prepares your body to respond to stress or danger.

🌿 Parasympathetic (Rest and Digest)
This allows your body to relax, recover and heal.

Ideally, your body moves smoothly between these two states.
But with modern life — work stress, screens, posture, lack of sleep — many people get stuck in fight or flight mode.

This can show up as:
• Jaw tension
• Neck pain
• Headaches
• Muscle tightness
• Poor sleep
• Feeling constantly “on edge”

Chiropractic care focuses on supporting the nervous system and helping the body unwind stress patterns.

Because when your nervous system is balanced, your body can function the way it was designed to.

Dizziness, jaw pain and ear symptoms can sometimes be linked to the upper neck.

The top of the neck sits just below the base of the skull and has close connections with the brainstem, jaw muscles and nerves involved in balance and ear function.

When this area becomes tight or restricted, it may contribute to symptoms such as:
• Dizziness or feeling off balance
• Jaw pain or TMJ tension
• Ear fullness or ringing
• Headaches at the base of the skull
• Neck stiffness

The upper neck also contains many receptors that help the brain understand head position and balance, which is why dysfunction here can sometimes affect dizziness.

Chiropractic care focuses on improving how the neck, spine and nervous system are working together.

In practice, I often use Neural Organisation Technique (NOT) to help unwind tension patterns affecting the upper neck and surrounding muscles.

Because when the neck moves well and the nervous system is supported, these symptoms often improve too.

The upper neck plays a big role in how your nervous system functions.

The top two vertebrae in the neck sit just below the base of the skull and are closely connected to the brainstem and nervous system.

When this area becomes tight or restricted, it can sometimes contribute to symptoms such as:
• Neck pain
• Headaches starting at the base of the skull
• Dizziness or balance issues
• Jaw tension
• Shoulder tightness
• Feeling constantly “on edge”

The upper neck contains many receptors that help the brain understand head position and balance, which is why dysfunction here can sometimes affect headaches and dizziness.

Chiropractic care focuses on improving how the neck, spine and nervous system are working together.

In practice, I often use Neural Organisation Technique (NOT) to help unwind tension patterns affecting the upper neck and surrounding muscles.

Because when the upper neck moves better, the nervous system can function more smoothly.

Chiropractic care during pregnancy can help support the body through a time of huge change.

As your baby grows, your body adapts in many ways — your posture shifts, your centre of gravity changes and your ligaments become more relaxed.

These changes can sometimes lead to symptoms such as:
• Lower back pain
• Pelvic discomfort
• Hip pain
• Neck and shoulder tension
• Headaches
• Difficulty sleeping comfortably

Chiropractic care during pregnancy focuses on supporting how the spine, pelvis and nervous system are functioning.

Care is very gentle and tailored for pregnancy, using techniques and positioning designed to keep both mum and baby comfortable.

In practice, I often use Neural Organisation Technique (NOT) which works with the nervous system to help the body adapt to the physical changes of pregnancy.

Because when the body moves well and the nervous system is supported, pregnancy can feel a lot more comfortable.

Struggling with an infant who won’t sleep?

The nervous system may play a role.

A baby’s nervous system is still developing and learning how to regulate between being awake, calm and asleep.

For sleep to happen, the body needs to shift into the “rest and digest” state of the nervous system.

If a baby’s nervous system is feeling overwhelmed or dysregulated, it may be harder for them to settle.

This can sometimes look like:
• Difficulty settling to sleep
• Frequent waking
• Short naps
• Fussiness
• Tension in the body
• Difficulty calming

Paediatric chiropractic care focuses on supporting the nervous system and gentle movement of the spine so the body can regulate more easily.

Adjustments for babies are very gentle and specific, often using light pressure techniques.

In practice, I often use Neural Organisation Technique (NOT) to help reduce stress patterns in the body and support nervous system balance.

Because when the nervous system feels calmer, babies often find it easier to settle and sleep.

Are your headaches actually coming from your neck?

Many headaches — and even some migraines — originate from the upper neck.
The joints, muscles and nerves in this area connect closely with the head, which means tension or restriction in the neck can refer pain upward.

Signs your headaches may be neck-related include:
• Headaches starting at the base of the skull
• Pain moving from the neck into the temples or forehead
• Neck stiffness or shoulder tension
• Headaches after long periods of sitting or screen time
• Relief when you stretch or move your neck

Stress can also increase tension in the neck, shoulders and jaw, which may contribute to recurring headaches.

Chiropractic care focuses on improving how the neck, spine and nervous system are working together.

In practice, I often use Neural Organisation Technique (NOT) to help unwind stress patterns affecting the neck and surrounding muscles.

Because when the neck moves better, headaches often improve too.

Jaw pain isn’t always just about the jaw.

The jaw joint (TMJ) works closely with the neck, muscles and nervous system.

Because of this connection, jaw pain is often linked with symptoms such as:
• Neck pain
• Headaches
• Ear symptoms
• Shoulder tension
• Jaw clicking or tightness
Stress also plays a big role.

When the body is under stress, many people unconsciously clench their jaw, which increases tension in the surrounding muscles and joints.

Over time this can affect how the jaw moves and functions.

Chiropractic care focuses on how the jaw, neck and nervous system are working together.
In practice, treatment may involve improving movement in the neck and upper spine and helping the body unwind stress patterns.

I often use Neural Organisation Technique (NOT) which works with the nervous system to help restore better coordination between muscles and joints.

Because when the body moves better, the jaw often does too.

What is the vagus nerve?

The vagus nerve is one of the most important nerves in your body.

It runs from the brain down through the neck and connects to many organs including the heart, lungs and digestive system.

This nerve plays a key role in the parasympathetic nervous system — the system responsible for helping your body relax, recover and heal.

When the vagus nerve is active, it helps:
🌿 Slow heart rate
🌿 Improve digestion
🌿 Support sleep
🌿 Reduce stress responses
🌿 Help the body shift out of fight or flight

However, ongoing stress can keep the body stuck in survival mode, making it harder for the vagus nerve to activate.

Chiropractic care focuses on supporting the nervous system so the body can better regulate stress.

Because the vagus nerve travels through the upper neck, improving how this area moves and functions can support nervous system balance.

When the nervous system feels safer, the body can finally relax.
