Dr Kyla- Paediatric Dietitian

Dr Kyla- Paediatric Dietitian Dr Kyla Smith is a paediatric dietitian revolutionising the way we feed our families Food and mealtimes are overwhelming for so many families.

I’m here to help you feel good about mealtimes, and change the way we feed this generation of children. There’s the process of starting off on solid food, surviving the fussy toddler stages and navigating school lunchboxes and family mealtimes, all whilst battling a myriad of misinformation and our own learned and sometimes negative relationships with food. My mission is to empower you with the sk

ills and confidence to support your baby, your toddler and your school-aged child to love their food and feel comfortable in their bodies. We can raise our children to respect their bodies and trust their hunger, and feel confident around food. It’s not always easy in our diet-obsessed culture, but it is possible. My approach will set your kids up for a future of eating that supports them to grow and thrive. I can't wait for you to join me!

I recently had a Mealtimes member ask if tinned or frozen fruit was okay to offer their child.

The answer is absolutely, of course!

You can confidently offer tinned, frozen or dried fruit. They are all nutritious options.

The trickiest part about offering a different form of fruit is often more about whether your child will accept the texture, rather than anything related to the nutritional content 🤪😅

I was down to my last box of Cheerios Low Sugar and then a miracle occurred.

They’re coming back to Coles and Woolworths nationally!!!

I actually can’t believe it.

So if you were one of the almost 7,000 parents, carers and health professionals who signed my petition to bring Cheerios Low Sugar back to supermarket shelves, thank you. Your support helped make this happen. We did it!

As a paediatric dietitian, I know many families loved Cheerios Low Sugar as a lower sugar breakfast option that kids genuinely enjoy eating.

Uncle Tobys Cheerios Low Sugar will begin rolling out nationally in Coles from today, 5th August and Woolworths from 24th August.

Tag me and UNCLE TOBYS when you spot it in store 📸

Now, tell me how excited you are! ⬇️

Sometimes a meal is just... bits and pieces.

It could include a few leftovers, the last handful of crackers, some cheese, fruit and veg that need using or just whatever you've got to pull out from the fridge, freezer or pantry.

Some people might call it a picky plate but we call it "bits and pieces."

I love meals like this because they're:
✨ Easy to throw together after a busy day
✨ A great way to reduce food waste
✨ An opportunity to offer a variety of foods without cooking another full meal

It's a good reminder that you don't have to perfectly plan, or home-cook a masterpiece for every meal. Breakfast for dinner, leftovers from the past few days or a random assortment of foods on a plate all make a meal.

Now I want to know... what would you call a meal like this? Is this the parenting version of "girl dinner"??

Have you ever thought this automatically ruled out the chance that your child could have low iron?

What if I told you that your child doesn’t have to be constantly falling asleep to be low in iron. In practice I see kids who are dysregulated, have frequent night waking, low appetite and/or recurrent illness BUT their energy levels would be considered completely normal (if not excessive 🤪).
