Sprained your ankle and need to get back on your feet — and back to sport? 🏃‍♀️🏉🏀🏐

Don’t just limp away and hope for the best.

A sprained ankle is a ligament injury — and the way it’s managed early can matter.

At From The Feet Up – Sports & Podiatry Clinic, medical laser therapy may be used as part of an individual treatment plan to support:

⚡ Pain management
⚡ Swelling and inflammation management
⚡ Cellular activity involved in tissue repair
⚡ Recovery alongside appropriate rehabilitation

But laser isn’t the whole story.

We also assess what your ankle and foot are actually doing — including stability, control, load tolerance and what you may need before returning to the field, court, track or gym.

Because the goal isn’t just to stop limping.

It’s to get you back on your feet, rebuild confidence and work towards returning to the sport you love.

🩻 “YOUR SCAN LOOKS FINE.”

But you’re still in pain.

You still can’t run properly.
You’re still limping.
You’re still avoiding certain movements.
You’ve changed your training.
You’ve changed your shoes.
Maybe you’ve even been told there’s “nothing wrong”.

So… what now?

Here’s the thing:

A scan is valuable. But it doesn’t show everything.

It doesn’t necessarily show how you move.

It doesn’t show what happens when you walk, run, fatigue, change direction or load one leg.

It doesn’t show how your foot interacts with the ground.

It doesn’t show whether your footwear is helping or changing the task.

And it doesn’t always explain why one part of your body may be struggling with the demands being placed on it.

That’s why I don’t believe assessment should stop simply because imaging doesn’t provide a neat answer.

The painful area matters.

But sometimes we need to ask a bigger question:

🔥 “What are you trying to do, and how is your body currently managing it?”

I’ve written a new blog exploring why scans and symptoms don’t always align neatly, and why function, movement, load and capacity still matter.

👇 COMMENT “BLOG” and I’ll send you the link to read it.

Excited to be joining the Podiatry Department at the University of Western Australia as a Clinical Supervisor for second-year podiatry students.

I’ve always loved mentoring students and helping bridge the gap between theory and real-world clinical practice. After nearly 30 years in the profession, it’s a privilege to contribute to the development of the next generation of podiatrists.

One of the most frustrating things you can hear is:

“Your scan looks normal.”

Yet your foot still hurts.

The reality is that pain doesn’t always correlate with what appears on an X-ray, ultrasound, or MRI. While imaging can be useful, it doesn’t always explain why symptoms are occurring.

Many foot and lower limb complaints are influenced by factors such as:

✔ How you move
✔ How you load the foot during walking and running
✔ Joint mobility and control
✔ Muscle timing and coordination
✔ Previous injuries
✔ Nervous system sensitivity

This is why some people continue to experience pain despite “normal” scans, while others may have significant findings on imaging but experience little discomfort.

At From The Feet Up, assessment extends beyond the painful area. We look at how your foot functions within the entire movement system to identify factors that may be contributing to ongoing symptoms.

Understanding why the problem is occurring is often the first step toward creating meaningful and lasting change.

👣 Does your second toe stick out further than your big toe?

You may have what’s commonly known as Morton’s Toe.

While it’s completely normal, it can change how your foot functions during standing, walking, running, and sport.

A longer second toe may influence:
✔ How you load the front of your foot
✔ Big toe movement
✔ Balance and stability
✔ Pressure under the ball of the foot
✔ The way your body moves further up the chain

This doesn’t mean you’ll have pain or need treatment.

But if you’re struggling with foot pain, bunions, forefoot discomfort, balance issues, or recurring injuries, it’s worth considering how your foot structure may be contributing to the way you move.

The key isn’t trying to change your foot structure—it’s understanding how your body has adapted to it.

Your big toe is more important than you think.

It’s not just there for balance…
It actually helps guide your whole body forward when you walk.

👉 Think of it like your body’s steering wheel.

If it’s not moving or working properly…
your body has to compensate.

And that can show up as:
• Heel pain
• Tight calves or Achilles
• Foot fatigue
• Knee, hip or even back discomfort

Most people try to fix the pain…
without ever checking the thing that’s driving it.

Your big toe.

If it can’t move well - you can’t move well.

👉 The good news? This is something we can retrain.

📍 If you’ve been dealing with ongoing pain or feel like something’s “off” when you walk or run…

After years of treating foot pain…
these are 4 things I wish more people understood:

1. Your feet control how your body moves.
If they’re not working well, everything else has to compensate.

2. Your toes need space.
When your toes can spread:
→ The small muscles in your feet can finally relax (instead of constantly gripping)
→ You get better bend through your ankle, knee and hip when you walk
→ Movement feels smoother and more controlled

3. Strong isn’t the same as stable.
You can be strong and still move poorly if your feet aren’t controlling things properly.

4. Most foot pain isn’t just about the foot.
It’s about how your whole body is moving.

👉 Something as simple as how your toes sit and move
can change everything.

📍 If your feet feel tight, weak or painful - or something just doesn’t feel right…

Most shoes don’t actually match the shape of your foot.

Look down at your toes…
Now look at the shape of your shoes.

They’re not the same.

And over time, squeezing your toes into that shape can lead to:
• Bunions
• Crowded or stiff toes
• Foot pain and fatigue
• Poor balance and stability

Your toes are meant to spread, move, and help you stay stable.

But when they’re constantly squeezed together…
they stop doing their job properly.

👉 And when your feet lose stability, your body has to compensate.

That’s when pain starts showing up - not just in your feet,
but in your calves, knees, hips and even your back.

We’ve been told this is normal.

It’s not.

👉 The good news? You can start changing this.

📍 If your feet feel tight, weak or painful - or you’ve been told “that’s just how your feet are”…

Book online and let’s get your feet working the way they should.

This might surprise you…

I can tell a lot about how your body moves
just by looking at your toes.

If your toes are:
• Clawing or gripping
• Squashed together
• Not moving well
• Turning or drifting

…it usually means your feet aren’t as stable as they should be.

And when your feet aren’t stable, your body has to compensate.

That can lead to:
• Foot pain
• Heel or Achilles issues
• Tight calves
• Knee, hip or back discomfort

Your toes aren’t just there for show -
they help your body balance, move and stay controlled.

👉 If they’re not working properly, everything else has to pick up the slack.

📍 If something feels “off” or you’ve had ongoing pain…

Book online and let’s get to the bottom of it.
