𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐎𝐃 𝐏𝐀𝐈𝐍 𝐈𝐒 𝐂𝐎𝐌𝐌𝐎𝐍… 𝐁𝐔𝐓 𝐈𝐓'𝐒 𝐍𝐎𝐓 𝐍𝐎𝐑𝐌𝐀𝐋⁣

If your monthly cycle feels like your uterus has joined an underground fight club, it's time we talk about 𝐝𝐲𝐬𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐡𝐞𝐚⁣

Because popping painkillers every month like they're breath mints isn't exactly the life upgrade anyone dreamed of⁣

Somewhere along the way, women were told that curling into the fetal position, arguing with a heat pack, crying over a dog food commercial, & questioning every life decision during their period was "just part of being a woman"⁣

𝘕𝘰𝘱𝘦!⁣

𝗪𝐇𝐀𝐓 𝐈𝐒 𝐃𝐘𝐒𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐎𝐑𝐑𝐇𝐄𝐀?⁣

Dysmenorrhea is the fancy medical term for painful periods. Symptoms can include:⁣

• Cramping⁣
• Lower back pain⁣
• Nausea⁣
• Headaches⁣
• Fatigue⁣
• Diarrhoea⁣
• Feeling personally attacked by your own uterus⁣

𝐅𝐑𝐎𝐌 𝐀 𝗪𝐄𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐍 𝐌𝐄𝐃𝐈𝐂𝐈𝐍𝐄 𝐕𝐈𝐄𝗪⁣

Primary dysmenorrhea is usually caused by elevated prostaglandins. These inflammatory chemicals trigger stronger uterine contractions, reduced blood flow, & more pain⁣

Secondary dysmenorrhea may be linked to conditions such as:⁣

• Endometriosis⁣
• Adenomyosis⁣
• Fibroids⁣
• Pelvic inflammatory disease⁣

Western treatment often includes anti-inflammatory medications, hormonal contraception, heat therapy, exercise, dietary changes, or investigation into underlying conditions⁣

𝐅𝐑𝐎𝐌 𝐀 𝐓𝐂𝐌 𝐕𝐈𝐄𝗪⁣

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, painful periods are seen as a sign that something isn't flowing properly⁣

Common patterns include:⁣

✨ 𝐐𝐢 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 – stress causes energy to become stuck⁣
✨ 𝐁𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐬 – blood isn't circulating smoothly, creating sharp painful cramps⁣
✨ 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐮𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐮𝐬 – the body's version of putting your reproductive organs in the freezer⁣
✨ 𝐐𝐢 & 𝐁𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐝𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲 – not enough nourishment to support a healthy cycle⁣

In TCM, the goal isn't simply to silence symptoms. It's to understand WHY your body is sending distress signals⁣

𝐘𝐎𝐔𝐑 "𝐇𝐄𝐀𝐋𝐓𝐇𝐘" 𝐁𝐎𝐃𝐘 𝐌𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐓 𝐁𝐄 𝐒𝐄𝐂𝐑𝐄𝐓𝐋𝐘 𝐒𝐀𝐁𝐎𝐓𝐀𝐆𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐘𝐎𝐔𝐑 𝐅𝐄𝐑𝐓𝐈𝐋𝐈𝐓𝐘⁣

Everyone talks about hormones, egg quality, s***m quality, PCOS, endometriosis… but hardly anyone talks about 𝐡𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐞⁣

Yep… the same chemical responsible for hay fever, itchy eyes, sneezing fits, & making spring feel like a personal attack⁣

Turns out histamine may have a bigger role in fertility than most people realise⁣

From a Western medicine perspective, histamine is a natural chemical released by the immune system. It helps with inflammation, allergic responses, stomach acid production, & even communication between cells⁣

But here's where things get interesting…⁣

𝐇𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬, 𝐮𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐮𝐬, 𝐟𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐭𝐮𝐛𝐞𝐬, & 𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐬⁣

Research suggests histamine may influence:⁣

• Ovulation⁣
• Implantation⁣
• Blood flow to reproductive organs⁣
• Inflammatory responses within the uterus⁣
• Hormonal signalling⁣

When histamine levels become excessive in some people, symptoms can include:⁣

🤧 Allergies⁣
🤯 Headaches⁣
😴 Fatigue⁣
😵 Brain fog⁣
😩 Anxiety⁣
💨 Bloating⁣
😬 PMS symptoms⁣
💩 Digestive issues⁣
❤️ Racing heart⁣
🌙 Poor sleep⁣

Basically, your body starts acting like it's allergic to existing⁣

Some people struggle to break down histamine efficiently due to factors such as gut dysfunction, chronic inflammation, stress, nutrient deficiencies, certain medications, or reduced activity of the DAO enzyme⁣

Now let's look at this through a TCM lens⁣

Traditional Chinese Medicine doesn't have a disease category called "histamine intolerance", but many people presenting with these symptoms often show patterns such as:⁣

𝐋𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐐𝐢 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Stress, irritability, PMS, headaches⁣

𝐒𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐐𝐢 𝐃𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲: Bloating, fatigue, loose stools, poor digestion⁣

𝐃𝐚𝐦𝐩 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐭: Inflammation, skin issues, sinus congestion⁣

𝐁𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐃𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲: Poor circulation, fatigue, irregular periods⁣

𝐀𝐋𝗪𝐀𝐘𝐒 𝐓𝐈𝐑𝐄𝐃? 𝐈𝐓 𝐌𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐓 𝐍𝐎𝐓 𝐁𝐄 𝐘𝐎𝐔𝐑 𝐀𝐆𝐄… 𝐈𝐓 𝐂𝐎𝐔𝐋𝐃 𝐁𝐄 𝐋𝐎𝗪 𝐈𝐑𝐎𝐍⁣

If coffee has become your personality, climbing stairs feels like a CrossFit workout, & you need a nap after replying to one email… your body might be waving a tiny white flag⁣

Low iron is one of the most common nutrient deficiencies in the world, especially in women. Yet so many people blame stress, getting older, being a parent, Mercury being in retrograde, or "just being busy"⁣

Meanwhile, your iron stores are sitting in the corner whispering: "𝘉𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘦… 𝘐'𝘮 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘨𝘨𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨"⁣

From a 𝗪𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞⁣
Iron is essential for producing haemoglobin, which helps carry oxygen around your body. When iron levels drop, less oxygen reaches your tissues, leaving you feeling:⁣
• Exhausted even after sleeping • Dizzy or lightheaded⁣
• Short of breath⁣
• Cold hands & feet⁣
• Brain fog ("𝘞𝘩𝘺 𝘥𝘪𝘥 𝘐 𝘸𝘢𝘭𝘬 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘳𝘰𝘰𝘮 𝘢𝘨𝘢𝘪𝘯?")⁣
• Hair loss⁣
• Pale skin⁣
• Heart palpitations⁣

Common causes include:⁣
✔ Heavy periods⁣
✔ Pregnancy⁣
✔ Poor dietary intake⁣
✔ Digestive issues affecting absorption⁣
✔ Vegetarian or vegan diets⁣
✔ Chronic inflammation⁣

In severe cases, low iron can progress to iron deficiency anaemia⁣

From a 𝐓𝐂𝐌 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞⁣

Traditional Chinese Medicine doesn't diagnose "low iron" the same way Western medicine does, but many people with iron deficiency present with patterns such as:⁣
𝐁𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐃𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲 𝐒𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐐𝐢 𝐃𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲 𝐋𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐁𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐃𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲⁣

In TCM, Blood nourishes the body, mind, muscles, skin, hair, & emotions⁣

When Blood is deficient, the body can feel like it's running on 3% battery while pretending everything is fine⁣

Common signs include:⁣
• Fatigue⁣
• Poor memory⁣
• Anxiety⁣
• Dizziness⁣
• Dry skin⁣
• Brittle nails⁣
• Insomnia⁣
• Hair shedding⁣
• Pale complexion⁣
• Irregular or heavy periods⁣

Basically… your body is saying:⁣
"𝘐'𝘥 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘢 𝘳𝘦𝘧𝘶𝘯𝘥 𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘥𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘦"⁣

𝐘𝐎𝐔𝐑 𝐈𝐌𝐌𝐔𝐍𝐄 𝐒𝐘𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐌 𝐈𝐒𝐍'𝐓 𝐒𝐔𝐏𝐏𝐎𝐒𝐄𝐃 𝐓𝐎 𝐀𝐓𝐓𝐀𝐂𝐊 𝐘𝐎𝐔... 𝐒𝐎 𝗪𝐇𝐘 𝐈𝐒 𝐈𝐓?⁣

Imagine hiring security guards to protect your house... then one day they start smashing your own windows, tackling your family members, & setting fire to the couch⁣

𝘚𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘴 𝘳𝘪𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘰𝘶𝘴, 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵?⁣

Well, that's basically what happens in 𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐨𝐢𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞⁣

Conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, lupus, psoriasis, multiple sclerosis, inflammatory bowel disease, & many others occur when the immune system becomes confused & starts attacking the body's own tissues⁣

From a Western medicine perspective, autoimmune diseases involve a complex mix of genetics, environmental triggers, gut health issues, infections, hormones, chronic stress, inflammation, & immune dysfunction. Scientists are still trying to understand exactly why the body suddenly mistakes "self" for "enemy"⁣

Now let's look at it through the lens of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)⁣

TCM doesn't have a diagnosis called "autoimmune disease." Instead, it looks at the patterns underneath the symptoms⁣

Some people may have 𝐋𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐐𝐢 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 from years of stress⁣

Others may have 𝐒𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐐𝐢 𝐃𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲, leading to fatigue, digestive issues, brain fog, & poor energy production⁣

Some may have 𝐊𝐢𝐝𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐃𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲, which in TCM is linked to deeper constitutional weakness, hormonal imbalance, fertility concerns, aging, & recovery issues⁣

Others may have 𝐃𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬, 𝐏𝐡𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐦, 𝐁𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, or excessive 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐭, creating inflammation throughout the body⁣

Think of it like this:⁣

Western medicine asks: "𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘥𝘪𝘴𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘦 𝘥𝘰 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦?"⁣

TCM asks: "𝘞𝘩𝘺 𝘪𝘴 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘣𝘰𝘥𝘺 𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘦𝘯𝘷𝘪𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘴𝘦 𝘴𝘺𝘮𝘱𝘵𝘰𝘮𝘴?"⁣

Both perspectives can work together beautifully⁣

𝘞𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘥𝘰𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘤𝘶𝘱𝘶𝘯𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘧𝘪𝘵 𝘪𝘯?⁣

No, acupuncture doesn't magically "cure" autoimmune disease⁣

𝐘𝐎𝐔𝐑 𝐌𝐓𝐇𝐅𝐑 𝐆𝐄𝐍𝐄 𝐌𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐓 𝐍𝐎𝐓 𝐁𝐄 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐋 𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐒𝐎𝐍 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐂𝐀𝐍'𝐓 𝐆𝐄𝐓 𝐏𝐑𝐄𝐆𝐍𝐀𝐍𝐓⁣

The internet has turned the MTHFR gene into the fertility world's version of a supervillain⁣

Can't get pregnant? MTHFR⁣

Had a miscarriage? MTHFR⁣

Stubbed your toe this morning? Probably MTHFR according to Facebook⁣

But is it really that simple?⁣

Let's talk about it⁣

𝗪𝐇𝐀𝐓 𝐈𝐒 𝐌𝐓𝐇𝐅𝐑?⁣

MTHFR stands for methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase. (𝘋𝘰𝘯'𝘵 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘺, 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘯'𝘵 𝘣𝘦 𝘢 𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳)⁣

This gene helps your body convert folate into its active form, which is important for DNA production, cell division, egg quality, s***m quality, hormone balance, pregnancy development, cardiovascular health, & much more⁣

Some people have genetic variations that may reduce how efficiently this process works⁣

From a Western medicine perspective, certain MTHFR variants may be associated with:⁣

• Elevated homocysteine levels⁣
• Reduced folate metabolism⁣
• Increased inflammation⁣
• Pregnancy complications in some individuals⁣
• Recurrent miscarriage in specific cases⁣
• Fertility challenges when combined with other risk factors⁣

But here's the important part...⁣

⚠️ 𝐇𝐀𝐕𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐀𝐍 𝐌𝐓𝐇𝐅𝐑 𝐕𝐀𝐑𝐈𝐀𝐍𝐓 𝐃𝐎𝐄𝐒 𝐍𝐎𝐓 𝐀𝐔𝐓𝐎𝐌𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐂𝐀𝐋𝐋𝐘 𝐌𝐄𝐀𝐍 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐀𝐑𝐄 𝐈𝐍𝐅𝐄𝐑𝐓𝐈𝐋𝐄⁣

Millions of people have MTHFR variants & go on to have perfectly healthy pregnancies⁣

The gene is one piece of the puzzle, not the entire puzzle!⁣

𝗪𝐇𝐀𝐓 𝐃𝐎𝐄𝐒 𝐓𝐂𝐌 𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐍𝐊?⁣

Traditional Chinese Medicine doesn't test for MTHFR⁣

In fact, ancient Chinese doctors weren't sitting around discussing gene polymorphisms over herbal tea⁣

Instead, TCM looks at the body's overall function⁣

When someone with fertility issues walks into a clinic, we assess patterns such as:⁣

• Kidney Jing deficiency⁣
• Blood deficiency⁣
• Liver Qi stagnation⁣
• Dampness accumulation⁣
• Spleen Qi deficiency⁣
• Blood stasis⁣

Because from a TCM perspective, fertility isn't just about one gene⁣
