I’ve been asking myself what I want my future self to be able to do, feel and enjoy.

Longevity isn’t only about adding years. It’s about supporting the strength, energy, metabolic and cognitive health that help us stay connected to the life we value.

These questions are a place to begin. Take a moment with them, then ask yourself: what is one small thing I could start doing now for the future I want?

Which question made you pause? Tell me below, or save this to come back to.

I read something this week that sent me down a bit of a rabbit hole.

Women who are able to conceive and have children naturally later in life seem, in some studies, to show signs of slower biological ageing. One study found that women who had their last child after 33 had around twice the odds of exceptional longevity compared with women whose last child was by 29. Another found that later maternal age at last birth was associated with longer telomeres. That doesn’t mean having a baby later makes you live longer. It may simply be that reproductive ageing is giving us an early clue about how the rest of the body is ageing too. That really got me thinking.

How early can we tell if someone is ageing slowly?

Probably much earlier than we think.

In our 30s it might show up in fertility, hormones, blood pressure or glucose regulation. In our 40s, perhaps recovery, body composition, sleep and insulin sensitivity. Later, things like muscle strength, fitness, bone density, balance and cognition start to tell us much more.

We focus so much on the face when we talk about ageing.

But the clues may be showing up inside the body decades before the wrinkles do.

And that, to me, is where ageing gets really interesting.

Studies mentioned:

For me, genetics was never really about doing a test and being handed a list of genes. I wanted to understand why my body had behaved the way it had for so many years.

I’ve had Graves’ disease. I have Gilbert’s syndrome. I’ve reacted badly to foods, supplements and hormones that other people seem to tolerate without a second thought. And there have been so many times when I’ve wondered, why does my body do that?

That question is probably what drew me to genetics in the first place.

When I started looking at my own results, little pieces of my health history began to make more sense. Not everything, and certainly not in a neat, perfectly packaged way. Genetics isn’t a crystal ball, and I don’t believe we should live our lives according to a DNA report. But it can give you clues. It can help explain why one person responds one way and another person responds completely differently.

For me, that was the value of it. It made me look at my health with more curiosity and less frustration. It gave me another layer of information to work with, and it made me realise just how individual we really are.

I’m still learning all the time, but I think that is what keeps me so interested in this area.

The more I understand about my own biology, the better decisions I can make for my future health.

Knowledge really is key.

HRT can be a valuable option for many women. I’d love to be able to take it myself.

But not every woman can.

Some women can’t use HRT for medical reasons. Some don’t tolerate it well. Others simply decide it isn’t right for them.

And when you’re not taking HRT, it can sometimes feel as though you’re missing out on the one thing everyone is talking about.

You’re not.

There is still so much we can do to support health through midlife and beyond - bone, muscle, metabolic health, cardiovascular health, brain health, sleep and overall resilience.

This is where individualised care matters.

Know your body. Understand your risk factors. Use testing where it genuinely adds value. Then build a strategy around what you need.

HRT is one tool.
Your health strategy is much bigger.

There should be room in the menopause conversation for women who don’t use HRT too.

We tend to think of ageing as a series of separate problems, cardiovascular disease, cognitive decline, metabolic dysfunction, frailty.

Geroscience asks a different question:

What if, instead of waiting to treat each condition as it appears, we better understood the biological processes of ageing that many of them share?

This is not about preventing ageing or pursuing immortality. It is about extending health-span, the years we live with strength, cognitive capacity, metabolic health and independence.

For me, this is why midlife matters.

The physical, metabolic and cognitive reserves we may rely upon decades from now are being shaped by what we do today.

Geroscience is an evolving field, and one I am continuing to study deeply. I’ll be sharing what the evidence supports, what remains emerging, and how we can translate the science into meaningful action.

Because our future selves are not simply waiting for us.

We are designing them.

A quiet kind of self care ❤️

Dinner for one, by the sea.

There was a time when I might have felt self-conscious sitting alone. Tonight, it felt like a luxury.

No rushing. No accommodating. No conversation to carry. Just warm air, the sound of the sea and time to be still.

Self-care isn’t always about doing more. Sometimes it’s giving yourself enough space to hear your own thoughts again.

Healthy longevity is built in these moments too, the ones that allow us to slow down, breathe deeply and reconnect with ourselves.
