Educational Play with Ooshies, Part 1: Magna-Tiles X Ooshies

If you’ve got a collection of Ooshies and some Magna-Tiles, you’ve already got an amazing OT activity waiting to happen.

Try these simple play ideas:

🏠 Position words
“Put the Ooshie in the house.”
“Can you put it on the roof?”
“Hide it under the bridge.”
“Make it go through the tunnel.”
“Can it stand next to the tower?”
“Who is behind the wall?”

🌈 Colour matching
Build a green house for the green Ooshies, a red garage for the red ones, or a blue castle for the blue characters. Ask your child to sort them into the correct buildings.

🔢 Counting
How many Ooshies fit inside? Can you add one more? Which house has the most?

🎭 Imaginative play
Create a town, zoo, school or superhero headquarters and let the Ooshies go on adventures!

💪 While your child thinks they’re just playing, they’re actually developing:
• Spatial concepts (in, on, under, next to, behind)
• Colour recognition
• Listening and following directions
• Language skills
• Problem-solving
• Fine motor skills
• Imagination and creativity

The best activities are often the simplest—and they don’t need expensive toys. ❤️

💬 Tell me… what are your child’s favourite Ooshies? ⬇️

You don’t need expensive toys or complicated activities to help your baby learn. Some of the most valuable moments happen during everyday interactions. Here are six simple ways to encourage your baby’s development through play.

📍 Wanneroo Regional Museum – one of my favourite FREE toddler outings! 🤎

As a paediatric OT, I love finding places where children can learn through play without even realising they’re building important skills—and the Wanneroo Regional Museum is full of opportunities.

✨ While you’re exploring, try these simple activities:
🚜 Ask, “What do you think this was used for?”
🔍 Play “Can you find…?” (a wheel, something made of wood, something bigger than you!)
🗣️ Introduce new words like enormous, rusty, smooth, and ancient.
👣 Let your toddler lead the way and follow their interests instead of rushing through every exhibit.

These simple interactions help develop:
🧠 Language and vocabulary
👀 Visual scanning and attention
💭 Problem solving and critical thinking
🤝 Joint attention and social communication
❤️ Curiosity and confidence

The best part? You don’t need expensive toys or structured activities. Sometimes the best therapy happens during everyday adventures together.

⏰ Opening Hours: Monday - Friday: 10 am - 4 pm. Saturdays: 12pm - 4 pm. Closed on Sundays.

💬 Have you visited the Wanneroo Regional Museum? What was your child’s favourite exhibit?

📌 Save this for your next rainy day outing and follow along for more OT-approved places to explore around Perth!

✨ OT find of the week! ✨

I found this super cute threading game at and of course had to test it out with a kiddo working on fine-motor goals 🧵🧠
Safe to say… he LOVED it! 💛

The game comes with copying cards, but this little legend decided to ditch the cards and get creative 🎨 — he made his own little man! 🧍‍♂️✨

💡 Skills you can target with this one game:
🎨 Creativity – Toss the cards aside and let imaginations run wild
🧠 Planning – Amazing for 3D planning and problem-solving
✋ Fine-motor coordination – Small board + tiny buttons = big skill work
🎯 Concentration – Careful threading through the correct holes (and sides!)
🔺 Shapes – Learn shapes and how smaller shapes combine into bigger ones
👀 Copying – Great for visual-spatial and position-in-space skills
🗣️ Following instructions – Verbal directions really challenge listening + planning

Such a simple game with so many therapeutic benefits 🙌

👉 Which other skills would you add to the list? 💬👇
