June is Scleroderma Awareness Month!
It is a chronic Autoimmune disorder that can present differently in each sufferer based on which organs are involved.
It affects over 6,000 Australians, over 300,000 Americans, with an estimated 2+ million people worldwide.
The core doctors involved will most likely be Dermatology and Rheumatology, but often it will require the input from a multi-disciplinary medical team including (but not limited to); Immunologists, Respiratory Physicians, Gastroenterologists, Cardiologists, Nephrologists, Dentists, and Oral Maxillofacial Surgeons, as well as Allied Health Specialists such as Physiotherapists, and Occupational Therapists.
If you are interested in finding out more, or wish to get involved in fundraising for research and/or support groups, it is happening through the various scleroderma foundations around the world - click on the links on the last page of this post, or search for your national group or any of the local support groups / forums for more information.
