Movementality Pilates Movementality Pilates offers online and in-studio sessions from their Mount Lawley based studio.

With a combined teaching experience of over 22 years, Ash and Rob have the knowledge and ability to help anyone looking to move and feel differently. Ash and Rob have brought together their experiences and passions to develop their Pilates studio and movement education hub, Movementality. Founded in Melbourne in 2017, it is built on the solid foundations of Balance & Control Pilates, established in Richmond in 2004. After 7 highly succesful years in Melbourne, Rob and Ash decided to move to Perth to be closer to family. Within a couple months, Movementality was reborn in their beautiful Beaufort St space where sessions continue to run today both in-person and online.

MOVEMENTALITY’S SCH LAUNCH >>>
(Supervised Clinical Hours for Pilates Teachers in Training)

This coming Friday we launch our brand new Supervised Clinical Hours where Pilates teachers can come and teach real clients while being observed and supported by either Ash or I in real time. It’s specific, it’s practical, and it’s built around the thing new teachers actually need - not more theory, but more time in front of bodies with a safety net. SCH is a soft landing into the industry where you can ask questions, nut through your “why’s” and “how’s” and ultimately fast track your teaching capabilities with people who have been doing this for over a decade. If that’s you, or someone you know, send us a message or hit the link in bio. 💫

10 THINGS WE’VE LEARNED FROM BEING A COUPLE FOR 12 YEARS AND BUSINESS PARTNERS FOR 9>>>

1. PLAY TO YOUR STRENGTHS (AND NAME THEM)
Knowing your lane makes you feel valuable in it.

2. LEARN TO FIGHT FAIRLY
Fighting isn’t the problem. Fighting badly is.

3. BACK EACH OTHER’S VISION
Trust isn’t the absence of doubt. It’s choosing to back someone anyway.

4. PICK UP EACH OTHER’S SLACK
We’ve learned not to tally it, but we try to acknowledge when we see the other is holding a lot.

5. PROTECT TIME TO THINK TOGETHER
Business brainstorm lunches, planning sessions - just the two of us, out of the studio.

6. COMMUNICATE LIKE YOUR JOB DEPENDS ON IT
Because it does.

7. DON’T STOP BEING FUNNY TOGETHER
But if we lose the lightness we just become colleagues - and we both deserve more than that.

8. HAVE THE HARD CONVERSATIONS
It’s not always comfortable but it keeps things clean.

9. RESPECT EACH OTHER OUT LOUD
We have a genuine, deep respect for what the other person brings.

10. REMEMBERING YOU ACTUALLY LIKE BEING A TEAM
On the hard days this is the thing we come back to. We chose this - the relationship and the business - because we genuinely like doing life and work together.

5 ways we are incorporating strength training into our classes at Movementality, without diluting the principles of the Pilates Method.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock you’ll know that strength training is having its moment (and rightly so)

With strong evidence linking it to reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, better bone health and overall longevity.

However, somewhere along the way, it got pitted against Pilates as if they were enemies.

When in fact they work side by side (and sometimes even together ssshh) rather harmoniously.

So here are 5 ways we are evolving to incorporate strength-based principles into our studio without losing the integrity of what Pilates has to offer;

1. Strength protocols and additional equipment: Alongside our full Pilates apparatus, we have installed a cable machine, gymnastics bar and trap bar. These additions allow us to progressively overload clients beyond the strength of what the springs offer, whilst still remaining true to Pilates principles, working with multiple planes and building on some of the repertoire to move into more gymnastics or callisthenics work (which happens to be part of the inspiration and origin of Pilates’ Contrology anyway.)

2. We are able to use these new pieces of equipment to measure a client’s progress more accurately. This is giving us trackable outcomes which help both us and and the client feel like we are on track towards our goals.

3. We change up our springs - not heavy for the sake of it, but meeting the body in the room with the appropriate load. We also use the springs to progressively overload which means we make things heavier and harder as people get stronger, again without compromising Pilates principles.

4. We are programming in blocks, not just flowing sessions. You’re always working toward something.

5. We are upskilling and deepening our knowledge. A good teacher will keep looking for ways to make what they do, better.

Strength vs Pilates? The goal is not to water down what we’ve always offered. Instead is about giving you a space where you don’t have to choose.

The realities of reel making as a couple in business 😂

This is not a very good way of saying we are thinking of revamping some Pilates education based content/ running something for the Perth crowd.

If you are in Perth and a Pilates teacher we’d love to hear from you.

🙌 What is missing from your practice?
🙌 Are you craving more community?
🙌 A safe space to hash out ideas?

We are so time poor that we want to make sure whatever we build really lands and benefits the Perth community so consider this our first attempt at market research. Would love to hear your thoughts!

Today, two years ago, we opened Movementality in Perth, here’s what we’ve learned so far...

🙌 Realestatecommercial.com isn’t the only place to find properties, sometimes you can find something perfect with an old school drive by.

🧁 Never underestimate the power of a good home baked brownie at an open day.

💫 Plans change, things fall through, but if you stay true to your vision, you can achieve what you set out to.

🙅‍♀️ It’s ok to set boundaries on how much you work. it’s ok to not be open every night of the week so you can be with your family. People understand and make it work.

💕 The relationship matters more than any intervention. Rapport builds trust = less flare ups.

🫁 Community breathes life into small business.

💻 AI will never replace good old fashioned human connection.

🌈 Small children and Pilates studios can be a great mix.

👌 Trust the process, it might take a while for the results of your hard work to come to fruition, but they will, and it will feel fantastic.

🥳 Here’s to many more birthdays doing what we love with people we love - Happy 9th Birthday to us.

How you are in your body, so too you are in the world…

What do I mean by this?

What you do within your body - how you move it and with what intention - will directly inform how you show up in other areas of your life.

That’s literally what it means to embody.

Setting a boundary, feeling expansive, holding steady… if we haven’t embodied it, how do we know how to action it in our lives?

Find it in your body first. Move your body, change your life.

Want to move with me? I’m building a new somatic offering in the background and it will be ready to launch soon. DM me if you’d like more info 🙌

Some ideas as to why more tracking might be equating to less connection - to ourselves and through ourselves to others.

They’ll even go as far as to say “my watch tells me…” they are reporting on data from their devices, not actually connecting to what’s happening within.

When we don’t know how we feel within, or how to find out how we feel, we can’t authentically relate to the world around us.

Read that again.

Have you actually felt into your body and asked yourself how you are feeling today? Can you notice the sensation, the emotion, the information and messaging your body is giving you about how you are showing up?

Take a breath, check in, notice what’s happening. How you are in your body, so too you are in the world.

I’m a somatic movement therapist and I’m building a new offering based on this. If you want support and practical tools for connecting to your body and coming home to yourself, so you can show up better in your world. Comment HOME and I’ll send you some more information ❤️
