Comments like this are more a reflection of our own frustration….

While understandable, it sure won’t inspire our kids to hang out with us more

Lets not create a ‘no win’ situation for our kids whereby they feel criticised no matter what they do

Children’s books on grief and loss - here are a few in our household

The Paper Dolls: Covers loss and sadness with a gentle message about how lost loved ones will live on in our memories.

Badgers Parting Gifts: Deals with death much more directly. A lovely story about treasuring the relationship and the memories and lessons left behind

The Velveteen Rabbit: A lovely story about hardships, authenticity, the power and messiness of love, gaining wisdom, and the transition to a kind of after life

Go gently ❤️❤️

Another little trick to help with separation.

We call this a ‘Mummy flower’. My youngest is currently having a little trouble with morning drop off so this morning I drew us matching flowers on our hands - when each of us presses it, it sends the other a hug.

It works for us quite well, maybe it will work for you too 🌸❤️

I love this diagram from but if I was to change one thing, I’d allocate 3/4 of the pie chart on the right to development and the remainder to everything else.

Children don’t have the extensive lived experience that we do, and their brains are still developing. This means that theres an awful lot they don’t know.

They don’t have the ability to perspective take or predict the consequences of their actions. They are unaware of social norms and have poor impulse control.

This means they often act in ways that we find odd, challenging, unexpected and, yes, sometimes even hurtful or dangerous.

In short, the interpersonal space is especially messy when it comes to kids and that’s how it’s supposed to be.

Our job is to not take it personally and don’t assign intent when there is none. Let them make mistakes (even the hurtful ones), always correct with kindness, and let them start each moment afresh

I’m so thrilled to have been gifted this piece by the very talented 💕💕

This piece is inspired by the sculpture “Love” by Alexander Milov… to me it represents the way so many of us get stuck in patterns of protection when what we really need is connection.

It’s such a powerful piece. I love it ❤️

I caught live last night and she smashed it!! 💥

I heard her self titled song for the first time and I was quite moved - the lyrics really spoke to me. They epitomise why I am so passionate about parenting and child development.

Every adult who sits on my couch carries within them their inner child - a child who, at best, suffers from chronic unmet needs and, at worst, is deeply and wounded 🌸

The work of therapy is to re-parent this inner child… together, we learn to acknowledge and grieve for what was missing, and how to put back what was needed.

This work is hard and long, but it is absolutely worth it. And even though I find my job incredibly rewarding….

I long for the day I am no longer needed x

(See lyrics below)

“Amy Shark”

….. You should see the shows I play
And hear them sing the words I say
I wonder sometimes if you're in the crowd
Cause I needed help I needed love
I needed care needed a hug
I needed praise
I needed time with you
And it plays on my mind all the time
All the time
I wanna love you
But I need you to try

And I still lose it every now and then
In an interview or a photoshoot
I could be halfway through a show
And it all comes creeping in
And I've sacrificed all my friends
Birthdays weddings everything
And it's heartbreaking but this is my dream
And I did it all without a phone call
Or a Christmas card You have no heart
This is my way of saying don't start
Don't start now I'm winning
And finally happy
Don't start now I've done all the years of hard work
Don't start taking over
And asking for favours
Please just don't start now that
I'm Amy Shark

Time to write today….

I was asked to put together a quick resource to help parents advocate for a more gentle transition to Kindy for their little ones. So often, schools and teachers advise parents that the only way to deal with little poppets who struggle with separation anxiety is make a swift exit.

However, this isn’t always the best approach.

Children who a more sensitive in temperament may need a gentler approach if they are to have the same chance at thriving in the classroom as their peers. If you find yourself in the position of needing to advocate for this, then this resource is for you.
