We talk about needing a village to raise a family.

But I think our brains village working in full capacity is what we all need first.

Meet the girls of the village;

🧠 Amy/amygdala - always watching for danger

👵 Nana Pat/Prefrontal cortex - our warm blanket of reasoning, patience, care & wisdom.

🍹Mimi/Hippocampus - keeper of memories & experiences

🧘 Isla/Insula- noticing what’s happening inside our body

They each have a different job but they don’t work alone. Very much a village.

When life has kept you under pressure for too long the village physically changes and struggles.

Which is why burnout is not an isolated emotional response but a structural change.

When things are like this, we don’t need to be tougher, we need the village to step up and all do their role.

That’s where the challenge is on and how I as a naturopath come into the picture. My role is to help the village prevent change, repair from change and function at its full capacity.

You deserve a Brain Village that has your back in n times of need!

Welcome to my series the “Brain village”

Your Brain Isn’t Broken, It’s Just Tired!

Feeling overwhelmed, struggling to multitask, or juggling daily tasks? It’s easy to think you’re “not coping” or “failing to balance,” but the truth is deeper. Long term stress leads to real, physical change me in your brain!

Here’s the reality

The areas of your brain that handle pressure are exhausted. These symptoms aren’t just something that will pass; they indicate that your brain has changed in shape, size, and function due to sustained stress.

Imagine this,
Amygdala (Amy) swells and becomes hyperactive, increasing anxiety.

Prefrontal Cortex (Pat) shrinks, reducing your ability to think clearly and stay stable.

You’re not broken, and neither is your brain. It’s about recognizing what’s happening and nurturing each part of your “Brain Village.”

Instead of trying to “harden up” with a cup of cement, let’s focus on supporting each section effectively.

This is key to regaining calm, unlocking your superpowers, or simply feeling like yourself again

Remember, understanding your brain is the first step to healing.

What if you’re burnout? Isn’t because you’re failing?

What if the brain‘s village is simply exhausted?

I spent years working with women who say things like

I don’t know what’s wrong with me.
I used to cope so much better.
Why am I so reactive?
Why can’t I think straight?
Why am I forgetting everything?

IT IS NOT just because “that’s ”.

I want to help understand what’s actually happening to make the brain feel mushy nd give task paralysis, forgetfulness and more.

There are actually 4 main parts to the brain and regulating life. All in different areas of the brain.

🧠 One keeps an eye out for danger.
👵 One helps you think plan and regulate
🍹 One helps you remember and puts things into context
🧘 one listens closely to what’s happening inside your body.

The whole system can get tired and this is where my little “brain village” comes in.

Creating complex neuroscience into four women.
I think you’re going to recognise who they all are in your life.

👁️ Amy the protector
👵 Pat the wise
🍹 Mimi the memory keeper
🧘 Isla the body feeler.

Over the coming weeks. I’m will introduce you to each of them and explain what they’re doing. Why chronic stress can affect them and what we can do to support healthy brain and nervous system function.

This isn’t about fixing a broken brain. It’s about understanding the brain you already have and of saying, what does my brain need from me?

Does ADHD feel harder in the second half of your cycle?

You’re not imagining it.

Many women and teenage girls with ADHD notice that after ovulation, everything feels harder.

The overwhelm.
The anxiety.
The rejection sensitivity.
The irritability.
The emotional rollercoaster.
The feeling that your brain just won’t cooperate.

Hormonal changes during the second half of the menstrual cycle can make emotional regulation more challenging. If you already have an ADHD brain that’s working hard to regulate attention, emotions and impulses, these changes can feel even more significant.

This is why I don’t just look at hormones.
I look at the whole picture.

Supporting hormone balance is important, but so is supporting your brain and nervous system.

Key to coping:
✔️ Replenishing key nutrients involved in brain and neurotransmitter function.
✔️ Supporting your stress response and adrenal resilience.
✔️ Using evidence-informed herbal medicine
✔️ Lifestyle strategies that strengthen the prefrontal cortex, helping you pause, plan and regulate more effectively.
✔️ Looking at pathology when indicated to understand what else may be contributing.

The goal isn’t to “fix” you.

The goal is to help your brain and body work together more smoothly, so that every month doesn’t feel like you’re fighting an uphill battle.

You’re not alone. Make a time to see me at Sage Health East Fremantle

Casual: Clock in. Clock out. ⏰
Part-time: Start time. Finish time. 📅
Full-time: 38+ hours a week. 💻

Mum life: 😂

Starts sometime around 2:47 am when someone needs a drink...

Officially begins again before the sun comes up...

Includes chef, taxi driver, counsellor, referee, event planner, therapist, laundry service, personal assistant, snack b$&ch and Psycologist.

Finishes, well, does it ever? 🤷‍♀️

To every mum reading this, you are smashing it.

So today, I just wanted to say...

Well done.

I’m proud of you.

Here’s a virtual pat on the back, a big hug, and a reminder that you’re doing far better than you probably give yourself credit for.

15/08/2026

Do you think this is true? The average Australian is said to be spending $6700 a year on surviving burnout.

I actually believe it is probably far more. ???

How much has burnout already cost you?

Emotionally toll aside...

Financially these are the bandaids:

💸 1am insomnia online shopping.

💸 Takeaway dinner, again. Too exhausted to cook.

💸 Just one more coffee each day.

💸 The massage that helped... for a little while.

💸 The facial.

💸 The weekend away. Maybe even Bali

💸 The supplements you bought hoping they’d be the answer.

💸 The sick days.

💸 The missed opportunities.

Please don’t get me wrong...

There is absolutely nothing wrong with any of these.

In fact, they can be wonderful acts of self-care.

But here’s the question...

Have they actually fixed your burnout?

Or have they simply helped you survive another week?

Burnout isn’t a lack of motivation.

It’s not because you’re weak.

And it’s not because you need another holiday.

Chronic stress changes the way your brain, nervous system and body function. Recovery takes more than temporary relief.

That’s why my approach is different.

I don’t want to add another expensive, overwhelming health plan to your life.

I want to help you understand why your body is struggling and create a simple, achievable plan that supports your recovery alongside the responsibilities you can’t simply walk away from.

Because the most expensive health plan...
..is the one that never addresses the cause.

Supported, guided, burnout recovery.

I don’t just ask whether your results fall inside the reference range.

I ask...

✨ Are they optimal for you?
✨ Do they match your symptoms?
✨ Are they telling part of a bigger story?

Often the reference range is followed like a rule book. Unless you are out of the rules, it is all good. Yet iron and many pathology results have a far greater grey area for the body to function.

I look at your pathology alongside your health history, energy, concentration, mood, sleep, menstrual health, digestion and overall wellbeing to understand what’s really going on.

One common example is iron.
Low iron stores can contribute to symptoms such as fatigue, reduced exercise tolerance, difficulty concentrating and, in some people, hair shedding or low mood.

Too often these symptoms are blamed on being busy, getting older or parenting.

THAT’s why it’s worth asking the question.

Your body doesn’t become exhausted for no reason.

My role isn’t to guess.

It’s to investigate, interpret the whole picture and help you understand what your body is trying to tell you.

Because being a “parent” may explain why you’re busy...

It shouldn’t automatically explain why you feel unwell.

Your symptoms are real, let’s find out why.

The mental load no one sees and you just make it work.

✅ Therapy appointments.
✅ The school emails.
✅ The lunchboxes.
✅ The reward charts.
✅ The sleepless nights.
✅ The endless decisions.

No wonder so many mums tell me they’re exhausted.

But what if it isn’t just the mental load?
Inside every cell are tiny energy factories called mitochondria. They work around the clock to processing the energy your brain, muscles and nervous system rely on.

To do that efficiently, they depend on key nutrients like B vitamins (especially B2, B3, B5 and B12), magnesium, iron, CoQ10, zinc and antioxidants.

The reality is that the mum juggle drains these.

When the car runs out of fuel there is a sudden stop! 🛑 no different to K**s when their tank is empty.

Any of these draining your tank?

• Chronic stress
• Broken sleep
• Pregnancy and breastfeeding
• Busy lifestyles and skipped meals
• Long-term use of the oral contraceptive pill
• Frequent use of pain relief for headaches or migraines
• Hormonal changes/perimenopause

When these factors combine, it’s worth asking whether your body has the nutritional resources it needs to keep producing energy.

This is why I insist on some testing, pathology and time to understand your case.

Taking the time to map it out, start, assess and review, assess and review….

It took time to empty the tank, I will be with you for the time it takes to repair it.

Burnout doesn’t always look the way people expect.

It’s not always lying in bed unable to function.

Sometimes it looks like...

• Cancelling plans because you have nothing left to give.

• Snapping at the people you love most.

• Feeling overwhelmed by simple decisions.

• Forgetting things you normally wouldn’t.

• Living on coffee just to get through the day.

• Hiding in the pantry, bathroom or car for five minutes of peace.

• Scrolling your phone because your brain can’t switch off.

• Feeling like you’re constantly “on edge.”

• Waking up tired, even after a full night’s sleep.

• Wondering where you went.

If you’re a parent, a carer, raising a neurodivergent child, supporting ageing parents or juggling a high-pressure job, these feelings can become so normal that you stop recognising them as signs your body may be asking for help.

Burnout isn’t a sign that you’re weak.

It’s often a sign that your brain, nervous system and body have been carrying more than they were designed to carry for too long.

The good news?

You don’t have to wait until you completely fall apart before seeking support.

Small, achievable changes can make a meaningful difference over time.

My role is to help you understand why you’re feeling this way and create a plan that fits your real life—not another overwhelming list of things to do.

Because you deserve more than surviving.

You deserve to feel like yourself again.

Your diet hasn’t changed... so why has your gut?

You’re eating the same foods you’ve always eaten...

Yet suddenly you’re bloated, burpy & fatty.

Worst is when your jeans feel tighter by the afternoon.

So naturally, you blame the food.

But what if the problem isn’t what’s on your plate?

When you’re living with ongoing stress, your body shifts into survival mode. Digestion is no longer the priority.

Over time, chronic stress can reduce digestive function, affecting stomach acid, digestive enzymes and bile flow. Food isn’t broken down as efficiently, nutrient absorption can be affected, and your gut microbiome may also be impacted.

This is one of the reasons stress and gut health are so closely connected.

I don’t just ask “What are you eating?”
I ask...
💚 What’s happening in your life?
💚 How’s your stress?
💚 Are you sleeping?
💚 Is your nervous system ever getting a chance to slow down?

Because if we only treat the gut and never address the stress, we may be missing an important piece of the puzzle.
Your body is always communicating.

Let’s find out what that smell really is being caused by.
