Resource Spotlight: Solace 💛

The loss of a partner can change almost every part of life - from the everyday routines you shared to the future you imagined together.

Solace is a not-for-profit organisation that provides grief support for people who have experienced the death of their partner.

Through connection with others who have experienced a similar loss, Solace provides a safe and understanding space to talk, listen and begin finding your way through grief.

Grief doesn't have a set timeline, and you don't have to navigate it alone 💛

Did You Know? Part 3: What happens at the funeral arrangement meeting? 🤍

Meeting with a funeral director is an opportunity to talk through your loved one's farewell in a supportive and caring environment. You don't need to have every decision made before you arrive – we're here to guide you through each step 🌱

During the meeting, we will get to know you and your loved one and discuss things such as:
• Your loved one's wishes, if known.
• Burial or cremation options.
• The date, time and location of the service.
• Personal touches, such as music, readings and flowers.
• Any paperwork that needs to be completed.

Every family is different, which is why every meeting is tailored to your individual needs and preferences. Our role is to provide guidance, answer your questions and help you make informed decisions at a pace that's right for you 🤍

No two farewells are the same, which is why every arrangement begins with listening to what's important to you and your family.

Bowra & O'Dea Funeral Directors isn't just about the people, vehicles and traditions that have shaped our history — it's also about the places we've called home 🛖

Over the years, we've operated from a number of different locations across Perth, and some of those buildings have changed dramatically with the times.

From grand old facades and early funeral homes to buildings that may look very different today, each one represents a little piece of our story 🤍

We've pulled some photographs from our archives — but we'll leave the guessing to you... 👀 Can you guess where each one was? Drop your guesses in the comments! 👇

While our buildings may have changed over the years, the people and families at the heart of what we do have always remained our focus 🤍

Did You Know? | Part 2: Who needs to be notified after someone passes away? 🕊

After losing a loved one, it's natural to feel overwhelmed by everything that needs to be done. While it may seem like there are many people to contact, you don't have to do it all at once.

Some of the people or organisations you may need to notify include:
• Family and close friends.
• The person's employer, if applicable.
• Banks and financial institutions.
• Insurance providers.
• Government agencies and service providers.
• Utility companies and subscription services.

Your funeral director can also guide you through the process and let you know what paperwork may be required, helping to make things a little easier during an already difficult time 🤍

Knowing who to contact can help make a difficult time feel a little more manageable 🌱

A couple of weeks on from the Bowra & O’Dea Women’s Classic, we're reflecting on another fantastic few days of golf, community and sportsmanship. ⛳

Held at Mount Lawley Golf Club, this year's tournament brought together talented amateur golfers from across Western Australia and beyond, showcasing incredible skill and a true love of the game.

Bowra & O’Dea is proud to have our name associated with an event with such a long-standing history of celebrating and encouraging women's golf. It's a privilege to support a tournament that continues to provide opportunities for talented players while bringing the golfing community together.

Congratulations to everyone who took part, and a big thank you to GolfWA, Mount Lawley Golf Club, the volunteers and organisers for making this year's event such a success.

We're already looking forward to next year! ✨⛳

Today is R U OK? Day – a reminder of the importance of checking in with the people around us 💛

A simple conversation can make a meaningful difference. Whether it's a family member, friend, neighbour or colleague, taking a moment to ask "Are you okay?" can help someone feel seen, heard and supported 🗣

While asking the question is important, it's equally important to know that support is available if someone isn't okay. We've included a list of trusted support services in this post that offer free and confidential help.

At Bowra & O'Dea, we know that life can bring unexpected challenges and that grief, loss and mental health can often be closely connected. We encourage everyone to look out for one another—not just today, but every day.

If someone comes to mind while reading this, why not reach out? A conversation could make all the difference 💛

Father’s Day can hold many different meanings for each of us 🤍

For some, it’s a day filled with laughter, stories and time spent together. For others, it can be a day of remembering someone who is no longer here, or reflecting on the father, grandfather or father figure who made a lasting difference in our lives 🕊

Today, we celebrate the fathers and father figures who have guided us, supported us, taught us and loved us — and we remember those whose presence continues to be felt through the memories we carry and the stories we share.

Wishing everyone a meaningful Father’s Day 🕊🤍

When someone we love dies, it can be easy to focus on the adults around us and forget that children are grieving too ❤️

Children experience grief in their own way. They may have questions about death, funerals and what happens next, or they may move between sadness, curiosity, anger and even play as they try to understand what has happened.

When Dinosaurs Die: A Guide to Understanding Death by Laurie Krasny Brown and Marc Brown is a gentle, age-appropriate book that helps children explore some of these big questions and feelings 🦖

It can be a helpful starting point for parents, carers and families who are supporting a child through the loss of someone they love.

Sometimes, giving a child the words to talk about death can help them feel less alone in their grief ❤️‍🩹

Did You Know? | Part 1: What should you do when someone passes away? 🕊

Losing someone you love is never easy, and it's completely natural to feel unsure about what to do first.

If they pass away in a hospital, hospice or aged care facility, the staff will guide you through the immediate next steps.

If they pass away at home, the process will depend on whether the death was expected. In many cases, you'll need to contact their doctor or, if the death was unexpected, emergency services. Once the death has been formally confirmed, your chosen funeral director can begin assisting with arrangements.

You don't need to have everything figured out straight away. A funeral director is there to guide you through each step, answer your questions and help make the process a little less overwhelming 🤍

Support begins with knowing where to start. Whether you have questions today or in the future, our team is here to provide guidance whenever you need it 🌱✨
