Just a little insight into rubys rare epilepsy condition

When I say LGS, I'm not talking about one type of seizure. I'm talking about a brain that can have MANY different kinds.

Let me explain Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome like you're 5. 💜

Think of your brain like a house with lots and lots of tiny electrical wires. Those wires send messages that tell your body what to do... move your arms, talk, think, see, sleep, and pretty much everything else.

With Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome (LGS), the brain's electrical system sometimes gets really mixed up. Instead of the electricity traveling nicely where it's supposed to go, it can suddenly go ZZZZAP ⚡ in the wrong way.

That electrical mix-up causes a seizure.

But here's what makes LGS different from many other kinds of epilepsy...

A child with LGS usually doesn't have just ONE kind of seizure. They can have several different kinds.

One seizure might make their whole body suddenly stiff. Another might make them suddenly drop. Another might look like staring or being completely "checked out." Some seizures can be so tiny that if you don't know exactly what you're looking for, you might miss them completely. Others are impossible to miss.

And unfortunately, LGS seizures can be REALLY stubborn.

A medication might help one type of seizure but not another. Something might work wonderfully for a while... and then suddenly not work nearly as well anymore. That's why kids with LGS often need multiple seizure medications and sometimes other treatments just to try to get those electrical storms under better control.

LGS can also affect learning and development, but every child is different. Some children already have significant disabilities because of an injury or condition affecting their brain, while others develop additional challenges as their epilepsy progresses.

So the easiest way I can explain it is this...

Epilepsy: My brain sometimes has electrical storms. ⚡

LGS: My brain can have MANY different kinds of electrical storms. They can happen frequently, they can look completely different from each other, and they can be incredibly difficult to control.

That's why when you hear a parent say their child has Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome, understand that we're not simply giving you the fancy medical name for epilepsy.

LGS is a severe and complex epilepsy syndrome. 💜
