Feeling unheard, unseen or unnoticed isnโ€™t just an emotional experience. It is a biological need.

๐Ÿง Our brains are deeply social. Our neurobiology is anchored in the safety of being a social mammal.

๐Ÿ‘€ This means we continuously unconsciously look for cues from other people โ€” their facial expressions, tone of voice, attention and responses โ€” to help us understand:

Am I being recognised?
Am I understood?
Do I matter here?
Am I connected?

When those expected social cues are missing, the brain will register this uncertainty or disconnection and threat.

โ›‘๏ธ And because the nervous system is designed to resolve uncertainty and restore connection to feel cognitively and socially safe, our behaviour will start moving toward restoring the safe signal of feeling heard, seen and/or noticed.

So we might:

- Explain more.
- Defend ourselves.
- Seek reassurance.
- Try harder to be understood.
- Replay the conversation.
- Or look for someone else to confirm that what we experienced was real or valid.

This is where external validation-seeking comes from.

It isnโ€™t necessarily attention-seeking.

Sometimes it is the nervous system trying to obtain externally what it hasnโ€™t yet received:

Acknowledgement of a biological need not being met - connection.
Connection = safety.

But there is another place that acknowledgement can begin.

With you.

Before you outsource the validation, try finding and acknowledging it yourself first by asking:

โ€œDo I feel unheard?โ€
โ€œDo I feel unseen?โ€
โ€œDo I feel unnoticed?โ€

ใ€‹You donโ€™t have to fix it!
ใ€‹You donโ€™t have to justify it!
ใ€‹You donโ€™t even have to decide whether you should feel it!

โ˜† Just need to notice if you feel it โ˜†

Because when you can say:

โ€œI notice that I feel unheard.โ€

โ€ฆyou are beginning to provide your brain with the thing you are searching for externally:

Recognition and acknowledgement of how you feel --> Safety!

That is where internal validation begins.

Notice yourself first to restore your safety.

THEN decide if you actually need it from someone else who is capable of offering it to you.

Self-sourcing safety starts with self-noticing.

Feeling wired and tired? ๐Ÿซฉ๐Ÿซฉ (there's even an emoji for it) ๐Ÿคฃ

โ“๏ธIf the answer is yes, it's your nervous system letting you know it's been working in high demand for a little too long.

โœ…๏ธ It worked for you whilst you were in the thick of the activity, but now it's no longer needed for that level of performance, it's struggling to adapt to the sudden downgrade.

โš ๏ธ Asking your brain to go straight from the hard work, the intense output, the constant noise, pressure and stimulation to complete stillness can often wreak havoc on the nervous system.

Your body may be exhausted, while your nervous system is still expecting the high level of input it has adapted to.
๐Ÿง It'll try it's best to keep that hum high by doing things like:

โœ”๏ธ oh let's doom scroll for a bit
โœ”๏ธmaybe check our work emails
โœ”๏ธget back to a colleague, client, friend or family about that thing that could definitely wait til tomorrow but we've convinced ourselves it must be responded to now
โœ”๏ธcrack into some socialisation
โœ”๏ธ do some problem solving just in a different space than before

The list is long and distinguishedโ€ผ๏ธ

๐Ÿ’ก Instead of trying to go from lots of stimulation to none, transition the downgrade.

๐Ÿค“ Don't treat your nervous system like a switch, treat it like a dial that you get to be in charge of when you are consciously aware of it.

โ–ก Dim the lights.
โ–ก Use candles.
โ–ก Reduce the noise.
โ–ก Use sensory clothing to calm your NS.
โ–ก Slow your movements.
โ–ก Choose something that requires less from your brain.

Your nervous system always operates at it's best when it is consciously listened to by you.

Another AMAZING workshop teaching some AMAZING teams at Rio Tinto.

WOW what a day!
It was and absolute privilege to teach so many exceptional brains today.

Pulling together the epic task of running this workshop as a hybrid delivery to reach the beautiful brains based in the eastern states as well as those here in person was not easy. We nailed it though ๐Ÿ’ช

The team leaders of these departments showed up to learn with their teams today and were a shining example of what true leaders are!

Today, we covered some challenging topics like: โ€ข making hard decisions with confidence
โ€ข how to have hard conversations
โ€ข building skills to de-escalate threat circuitry in conflict using conflict communication strategies.

๐Ÿง ๐Ÿง ๐Ÿง

Thank you so much to everyone today who invested their time and effort both in-person and online.
I hope your new found knowledge and skills serve you well and help you perform with confidence under any type of pressure.

See you next month for another jam packed workshop on enhancing global brain performance.
I can't wait!

๐Ÿ˜ด When you sleep, your brain gets a bath.

Every REM cycle of sleep you get your brain gets a nice big bath from the fluid it lives in, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).

A you sleep, the neurons in your brain shrink a little allowing for more space for an influx of CSF.

๐Ÿ› The CSF washes away the residual compound adenosine.

Adenosine builds up in your brain throughout the day from neurotransmitter usage. The more you use your brain throughout the day, the more adenosine builds up.

Simply put, adenosine is a neurotransmitter by-product.

๐Ÿ’ค It binds to your neurons and, when it builds to the right amount, it makes you sleepy.

โ˜•๏ธ Caffeine competes with adenosine receptors. Essentially caffeine steals adenosine's carpark spot and prevents adenosine from parking and signalling to you "we're tired".

You need at least 3 REM cycles of sleep (~7-8hrs) to completely wash your brain of excess adenosine. A semi-washed brain (a shortened sleep) prevents the adenosine from being washed away completely and will leave you feeling groggy and foggy.

Not to mention that sleep is also involved in:
โ— Brain immune function
โ— Learning consolidation
โ— Neuron restoration
โ— Reduced cortisol baseline
โ— Reducing brain inflammation
โ— and more

Prioritise your sleep ๐Ÿ˜ด

โš ๏ธ Mind your environment.

When you are repetitively in environments where you feel misaligned or conflict, be mindful that your brain needs to find a way to "cope" with the perceived unconscious threat that lurks under the surface of the misalignment.

Coping can look like:
โ–ก appeasement behaviour
or
โ–ก self-serving behaviour

โ— Both are survival mechanisms
โ— Both have varying degrees of intensity.
โ— Sometimes, it's possible to bounce between the two, depending on the environment.
โ— Both can will be rehearsed and refined over time.
โ— Both are a result of self-protection.

If your nervous system feels the need to use a mechanism to protect itself, maybe it's worth considering finding a new environment that helps you thrive rather than just survive.

โŒ๏ธ Stop trying to change the people around you.
โŒ๏ธ Stop waiting for the people around you to change.
โŒ๏ธ Stop outsourcing your decisions to others.
โŒ๏ธ Stop outsourcing feeling noticed, heard and seen to people who don't care.

โœ…๏ธ Start making decisions for yourself.
โœ…๏ธ Start self-sourcing your safety by choosing environments that are more aligned to you.
โœ… ๏ธStart noticing, hearing and seeing yourself.
โœ…๏ธ Start believing your helpful self-talk over their unhelpful opinions.
โœ…๏ธ Start saying to yourself "I am worthy, I am valuable, I am important and I am significant" to override every time you adopted the feeling that you weren't those things around someone else.

You deserve better than just coping.

You deserve to thrive!

Your brain needs a purpose and so does your body!

Your beautiful brain and body were designed to move and think for a purpose.

โ€ข Hunt for your food with strategy to stay alive.
โ€ข Connect with people at varying depths to procreate and expand genetic diversity and versatility, stay safe, collect food, stay warm and alive.
โ€ข Build things, create things, carry out tasks that contribute to the purpose of staying alive.

Sometimes you'll love the purpose.
It'll be easy, motivating and will come with a strong emotional connection to it.

Other times you won't enjoy the purpose so much. It'll be hard and uninspiring.
But if you choose to look, you can appreciate, respect, and value the contribution it adds to your life.

Life is not about focusing only on the things you "want" because they're easier, better, more enjoyable.
Life is about connecting with the purpose and FINDING the lesson within it so you can develop into a superstar human and turn coping into THRIVING.

30/07/2026

Over the next few months, I have the absolute privilege of working alongside Rio Tinto teams, delivering a workshop series focusing on the neuroscience of change, uncertainty and performance under pressure.

Change is no longer an occasional eventโ€”it's a constant. Yet our brains are biologically wired to detect uncertainty, making change feel mentally demanding long before we consciously realise it.

Throughout this series, the teams will be exploring the biology behind these responses and translating neuroscience into practical, everyday frameworks that they can immediately apply in the workplace and at home.

Together we are covering:
๐Ÿง  How the brain detects and responds to change and uncertainty.
๐Ÿง  Why pressure changes the way we think, communicate and make decisions.
๐Ÿง  Practical strategies to regulate the nervous system and improve cognitive performance.
๐Ÿง  How creating a shared understanding of brain biology strengthens communication, peer support and psychologically safer teams.

My passion is helping organisations understand that every decision, conversation, relationship and response to pressure begins in the brain.

When people understand the biology behind behaviour, they stop simply reacting to pressure and start building the skills to perform through it.

I want to take a moment to say a huge thank you to the Rio Tinto teams for their engagement, curiosity and willingness to learn throughout the series, and for their bravery to learn about behaviour through a new lens.
It was a genuine privilege to be part of your learning journey today!

Thank you Rio Tinto for being the innovators of the world, saying yes to new knowledge and trying new things!
