Mental health recovery isn’t a straight line, and that’s okay 🙌

Recovery can look different for everyone. You might move from feeling overwhelmed, to seeking support, to rebuilding your confidence and sense of purpose, and sometimes, you may find yourself revisiting an earlier stage.

The important thing to remember? A setback doesn’t mean you’ve failed. It’s part of being human.

From crisis and awareness to healing, growth and maintaining your wellbeing, there are seven common stages that can help make sense of the journey.

Progress isn’t about perfection - it’s about moving forward, one step at a time.

When helping others takes a toll on your own mind... 🧠💔

Exposure to second-hand traumatic content, frequent among clinicians, first responders, and support professionals, can precipitate vicarious traumatisation. Over time, processing secondary traumatic stress alters cognitive schemas and triggers neurobiological responses mimicking primary PTSD.

Symptomatology often presents as intrusive thoughts, anxiety, sleep disturbances and emotional blunting.

Mitigation requires targeted interventions. Practicing mindfulness and continuous exercise regulates sympathetic nervous system arousal. Maintaining structured social support networks buffers against psychological fatigue, while cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) offers structured techniques to reframe distorted cognitive schemas and process secondary distress.

Caring for others shouldn't cost your mental health. How do you protect your peace in a high empathy role?

When life feels unpredictable or overwhelming, the sensation of losing control can send your nervous system into overdrive. It often triggers panic, anxiety, and a urgent desire to fix everything all at once.

In those moments, trying to regain control of the entire situation usually leads to deeper exhaustion. Real stability starts with turning inward and taking small, manageable steps.

Here is a simple framework to help you ground yourself when things feel chaotic:

🔹 Pause and Anchor Your Body: Take a deep, deliberate breath. Grounding physical techniques like the 5-4-3-2-1 sensory method, help signal to your brain that you are safe in the present moment.

🔹 Separate What You Can vs. Cannot Control: Focus your energy strictly on your immediate responses, boundaries, and habits. Let go of trying to manage outcomes, other people's actions, or future uncertainties.

🔹 Break Down the Next Step: When the big picture feels impossible, ask yourself: "What is one tiny, practical thing I can do right now?"

🔹 Practice Self-Compassion: Feeling overwhelmed is a human response to stress, not a personal failure. Treat yourself with the same patience you would offer a friend.

Losing control of a situation doesn't mean you're losing yourself. Sometimes, regaining control simply means choosing how you respond to the chaos around you.

Recovery is not built overnight. It is collected in micro moments ✨

When navigating mental health challenges or trauma recovery, we often look for huge breakthroughs or major milestones to prove we are making progress.

In reality, sustainable healing happens in much smaller increments.

Micro moments of joy, like a warm cup of coffee, a moment of sunshine, a shared laugh, or a quiet breath, do far more than offer brief comfort. From a neurobiological perspective, actively noticing and receiving these small moments helps:

🔹 Lower Cortisol: Taps into your parasympathetic nervous system to signal safety in the present moment.
🔹 Rewire Neural Pathways: Triggers the release of dopamine and serotonin, counteracting chronic stress and burnout.
🔹 Build Resilience: Gently breaks the loop of rumination without minimising your real emotional pain.

Joy and healing do not mean ignoring the difficulties of life. They mean giving your mind permission to rest and recharge alongside them.

See how cultivating micro moments can support your daily recovery journey ➡️

What is one micro moment of joy you have noticed today?

Procrastination is often misunderstood as laziness or poor discipline. In reality, it is frequently a form of self protection 🛡️

When a task is tied to fear of failure, fear of judgment, perfectionism, or uncertainty, our brain looks for relief. Checking emails, tidying the house, scrolling social media, or working on something easier can feel productive in the moment, but they are often ways of avoiding discomfort.

The challenge is that avoidance provides short term relief and long term stress. The task remains, the pressure grows, and our confidence gradually erodes.

One of the most effective ways to break the cycle is not to wait for motivation. It is to make the task feel psychologically safe. Lower the barrier to entry. Start with five minutes. Aim for a rough first draft. Give yourself permission to be imperfect.

Progress is rarely driven by inspiration. It is usually built through small actions that reduce fear and create momentum.

Public spaces are full of private realities. On any given day, a single crowd holds both the highest highs and the quietest struggles. Promotions and heartbreak, milestones and recovery, new beginnings and heavy goodbyes.

Mental health isn't always visible. Most people learn to navigate their personal storms while showing up for everyday life.

A reminder for the week ahead: practice compassion. We don't always need to know what someone is carrying to make their load a little lighter ✨

There’s something truly special about creating space for women to pause, breathe, and reconnect.

Today, Breathe Counselling welcomed ten incredible ladies to another of our small group Breathwork and morning tea gatherings. Together, we experienced a gentle, guided Breathwork session led by Co-Director, Joanna Gwynn which focused on calming the nervous system and connecting to your heart’s wisdom, followed by morning tea, time in the gardens, meaningful conversations, and plenty of sunshine ☀️🍃We also enjoyed raffling off some wonderful prizes, generously donated by local businesses.

Thank you to all attendees for your very positive feedback.

Wellbeing isn’t only about individual healing - it’s also about community, connection, and belonging and today was a good reminder of this.

We are already looking forward to our next gathering. Be quick to secure your place as we will always keep these group sessions intentionally small and welcoming.

A sincere thank you to the amazing local businesses who generously donated our beautiful door prizes. Your support not only added to the fun of the morning but also demonstrated the strength of our local community when we come together to support wellbeing:

The fear of rejection is a deeply human emotional response driven by our fundamental need for belonging, validation, and social connection. Stemming from past experiences, social comparisons, and cultural pressure, this fear often manifests as low self-esteem, self-sabotaging behaviours, and avoidance of growth opportunities.

Overcoming the fear of rejection requires shifting your mindset and strengthening internal self-worth. We can start by identifying and challenging negative beliefs that make us view a single “no” as a personal failure, and learn to reframe setbacks as temporary opportunities for growth and learning. Building self-confidence independently of external validation allows you to embrace vulnerability, set boundaries, and take meaningful risks. Ultimately, focusing on the process of taking action, rather than chasing guaranteed outcomes, helps turn rejection from an obstacle into a tool for growth 🌻
