We’re delighted to welcome Dr Rusty Muse back to Animal Dermatology Clinic Perth! 🐾

Dr Rusty will be seeing dermatology consultations at both our Murdoch and Balcatta clinics until early October.

A registered specialist in veterinary dermatology with more than 30 years of experience, Dr Rusty is a familiar face to many of our clients and a valued part of the wider ADC team.

We’re very happy to have him consulting with us again and caring for our patients! 💚

What are we looking at under that microscope? 🔬👀

Cytology might seem like a small part of your pet’s dermatology appointment, but it can give us valuable information right there in the clinic.

By examining samples from the skin or ears, we can look for things such as bacteria, yeast and inflammatory cells.

That information helps us understand what’s happening today, select appropriate treatment and monitor how your pet is responding over time.

Tiny sample. Lots of useful information. 🐾

☎️ “ANIMAL DERMATOLOGY CLINIC, HOW CAN I HELP YOU?” 🐶

Someone decided that after her procedure, it was time to start earning her keep… 😂💚

Our receptionist Fii had a little extra help at the front desk, with this gorgeous girl taking her new role very seriously.

Her owner did say she needed to earn back the cost of her procedure, after all! 🤭

Current skill set:
🐾 Answering phones
🐾 Looking adorable
🐾 Accepting pats from colleagues
🐾 Zero experience with the booking system

We think she’s hired. 💚

We’re excited to share that our Nurse Karin recently joined the pureANIMAL Collective podcast to talk all things veterinary dermatology! 💚🐾

Karin shared an insight into life as a dermatology nurse, the procedures our nurses are involved in, and the important role they play in supporting pet owners through the management of chronic skin and allergy conditions.

She also dived into one of her particular areas of interest - allergies and allergen-specific immunotherapy - including how veterinary nurses help educate and support families throughout their pet’s treatment journey.

And there’s more! 📖 Karin has also contributed a featured e-article exploring the diverse role of veterinary nurses in dermatology, from diagnostics and treatments to client education, home care and ongoing allergy management.

We’re very proud to see Karin sharing her knowledge and passion for veterinary dermatology beyond the clinic! 👏💚

This patient presented with a small, pigmented mass, approximately 5mm in diameter, located at the outer corner of the left eye. 👁️

The mass was carefully removed and the base treated with laser. The tissue was then submitted for histopathology for further investigation. 🔬

➡️ Slide 1: Before treatment and the healed result following laser surgery
➡️ Slide 2: The lesion immediately before and after laser treatment

Histopathology confirmed papillomatous lymphoplasmacytic keratitis with carcinoma in situ.

Cases like this are a good reminder that even a small lesion can warrant further investigation and why submitting removed tissue for histopathology can be so valuable.

📍 BALCATTA CLINIC UPDATE

A quick update for our Balcatta clients 🐾

From mid-September, our team will no longer be at the Balcatta clinic on Wednesdays until further notice.

But don’t worry - we’ll still be there every Friday! 💚

Please keep this change in mind when planning your pet’s next dermatology appointment.

For most allergic skin disease, we talk about management rather than a cure.

Our goal is to identify your pet’s triggers where possible, manage secondary problems and develop a long-term treatment plan that keeps itching and flare-ups under control.

Allergies may be lifelong, but that doesn’t mean your pet has to be uncomfortable. 💚

Good allergy management is about giving them the best possible quality of life with fewer itchy days and more comfortable ones. 🐾

🐱 It might look like she’s had a haircut… but she did this herself!

This kitty has been overgrooming, repeatedly licking both sides of her body until the hair has become so short and even that it almost looks like it has been clipped. ✂️🐾

Cats are very good at grooming in private, so owners may not always notice the excessive licking. Sometimes, the first clue is a change in their coat, shortened or broken hairs, thinning patches or areas of hair loss.

So, why do cats overgroom? 🤔

There can be a number of underlying causes. It may be due to itch from environmental or food allergies, parasites or other skin conditions. In some cats, stress or behavioural factors can also contribute to excessive grooming.

That’s why it’s important to investigate what’s behind the behaviour rather than assuming it’s simply a grooming habit. 🔎🐱

If your cat suddenly looks like they’ve given themselves a haircut, their skin might be trying to tell you something - book your appointment to get your cat checked on ☎ 08 6277 9430 or 📩 [email protected] 💙

This handsome boy has officially completed his RUSH immunotherapy induction and he has the certificate to prove it! 🎓🐶

Allergen-specific immunotherapy (ASIT) uses an allergy vaccine prepared based on an individual pet’s allergy test. The aim is to help the immune system develop tolerance to the environmental allergens that trigger their allergies, such as tree pollens, moulds and dust mites.

RUSH immunotherapy allows our patients to reach their maintenance dose over a much shorter period than a traditional induction protocol. During RUSH, allergy vaccine injections are given at carefully timed intervals while our dermatology team closely monitors the patient throughout the process.

Now that this clever boy has completed his RUSH induction, he can move on to his ongoing maintenance injections. 💉🐾

Congratulations on reaching this big milestone, we think it deserves a paw-shake! 💙👏
