In my first pregnancy, I was completely consumed by positive birth stories. I believed with all my heart that if I just held onto good vibes and trusted the process, everything would unfold smoothly.

Then at 37 weeks, I got the news that my son was breech.

I was totally blindsided. I had to scramble to do a complete mindset shift, navigate my options, and advocate for myself in a system I hadn’t fully prepared to question.

If I had taken the time earlier to explore what my priorities were - and built the confidence to speak up - that pivot would have felt far less overwhelming.

Positive birth stories are wonderful, but on their own, they aren’t a complete birth strategy.

The reality is that at least 1 in 3 birthing people experience birth trauma, and many more walk out feeling disempowered or unheard.

True preparation means building your agency before you enter the room. ✨

Through Svadhyaya (self-inquiry), we get to examine our own conditioning - including the urge to be a ‘polite, quiet patient’ who doesn’t rock the boat. Real birth preparation gives you the grit and grace to:
☀️ Ask the hard questions when an intervention is suggested.
☀️ Say a clear, grounded ‘no’ or ask for time to pause and discuss.
☀️ Protect your birth space and your baby with unwavering self-advocacy.

You don’t need to fear birth, but your experience is far too sacred to leave to chance.

I wonder... have you ever had a moment in your pregnancy or birth prep where you had to totally pivot your expectations or mindset?

I was reading through some reflections from my Practical Yoga Philosophy for Conception, Pregnancy and Parenthood course with blissbabyyoga and this one response stopped me in my tracks:

“I want to do some follow up reading and spend some time living the Yamas and Niyamas in my day-to-day before offering this as a course to my students.”

My heart soared because this student shared the true essence of what yoga is all about.

We live in a fast-paced, digital world where it is so easy to just copy and paste what we’ve been told. It’s easy to repeat beautiful South Asian philosophy or rattle off alignment cues like a textbook.

But matrescence - the profound, raw transition into becoming a mother or parent - demands so much more from us than recycled words.

🧘Lived experience is the only true teacher

Your students and clients don’t need a lecturer who is just repeating instructions. They need a grounded guide who has actually stood in the fire of the practice themselves.

This is the heart of svadhyaya (self-governance and inquiry) and tapas (integration through real-life practice, even when uncomfortable at times).

We must first allow the yoga to change us in our own daily lives (especially in the messy, beautiful, and exhausting realities of parenting) before we can authentically share it with anyone else.

If you are a yoga teacher, birthworker, or perinatal professional who wants to step into lived embodiment to support families, this course is for you.

I wonder... for the space-holders and parents reading this, how do you practice shifting away from just “thinking” about philosophy and actually breathing it into your daily life? 👇

In this clip from “Are you Homebirth curious?” Episode 3, dual-registered paramedic and midwife Mel Gardiner shares a behind-the-scenes look at how the STORC service acts as a calm, professional bridge between on-road crews and busy hospital maternity units.

When an emergency transfer is required, the healthcare system is often operating under immense pressure. Hospitals face sudden capacity challenges, and paramedics are managing high-stakes environments. It is rarely about anyone being uncooperative - it is simply the reality of a busy system managing logistics in real time. 🏥

That is where the STORC service shines. By stepping in to handle the administrative communication, protect the mother’s booked care pathway, and provide receiving hospitals with precise clinical updates, they lift the cognitive load off everyone:

☀️ The paramedics on the road can focus 100% on keeping the transfer environment calm and safe.

☀️ The hospital midwives and doctors get the heads-up they need to prepare the room for arrival.

☀️ The birthing person experiences a seamless, dignified transition surrounded by a synchronised team.

True safety isn’t created by working in silos; it’s created when healthcare professionals collaborate to form a circle of care around a family.

Toxic positivity has a tight grip on the perinatal space, and it’s doing a massive disservice to mothers 😞

When a woman is navigating the raw reality of postpartum, throwing spiritual phrases at her is just a comfortable way for other people to avoid sitting in the discomfort with her.

True postpartum support is grounded in reality.

It is practical, and it requires us to show up physically, not send empty “good vibes”.

🧚 Less fairy dust.
🍽️ More home-cooked meals
🫶 More inclusive clinical respect
🧑‍🍼 More holding the baby while they have a shower
👚More putting on a load of washing, hanging it out or folding it for them
☕️ More listening to their story over a cup of tea You brewed for them

What was the most actually helpful piece of practical support you received postpartum? Let’s change the standard in the comments. 👇

How do you climb a psychological mountain like unmedicated, physiological birth?

You don’t face the whole mountain at once. You take it one step at a time. 👣

In Episode 2 of ‘Are You Homebirth Curious?’, women’s health physiotherapist Jen Nicholson of shares how her background as a cross-continental long-distance hiker inspired her mindset when it came time to birth her daughter.

When the contractions grew intense, she didn’t allow her mind to panic about how many hours were left. She didn’t look at the 4,000-kilometer horizon. She simply looked at the single step right in front of her and asked: “Can I do just one more?”

And every single time, her body answered: Yes ✨

If you are currently preparing for birth and feeling overwhelmed by the sheer scale of the unknown, let Jen’s story be your anchor today.

You don’t have to birth the baby all at once. You just have to ride the wave you are in right now. 💛

The ultimate paradox of being a space-holder is realising that the deeper your work goes, the less it has to do with you.

It is an ongoing practice in ego-detachment to sit in the roles of podcast host, Bowen therapist, and yoga guide and consciously say: “I am here to step out of the spotlight.”

(And it’s even harder when you have to talk about it on social media 🤪 😆)

In a world that rewards self-promotion and micromanagement, it is incredibly easy for practitioners to centre themselves as the “expert” or the “healer.” But true, autonomous care requires a radical shift in perspective.

The Reframe on True Space-Holding:

🎙️ Behind the Mic: It’s about active, reverent listening. Letting the silence hang so the guest’s medicine can surface without over-managing the script.

💆 At the Bowen Table: It’s about trusting the body’s innate wisdom. The true shifts don’t happen because of my physical movements; they happen in the quiet pauses when I leave the room and let their cellular intelligence take over.

🧘 On the Yoga Mat: I am simply a non-prescriptive guide. The transformation belongs entirely to the person moving with their breath and quieting their mind

My work isn’t about making myself look like the answers; it’s about allowing those who seek the space to realise that they ARE the answer. ✨

When you prepare for birth or a new day of parenting, remember this: you do not need a team who wants to rescue you. You need a village that knows how to hold a safe space so your innate wisdom can shine 🌟
