🚨 Why falling backwards is more serious than you think 🚨
Not all falls are the same — and falling backwards can be much more concerning, especially in children.
When we fall forward, our body naturally protects us by putting our hands out to break the fall. But when falling backwards, this protective reaction is often slower or doesn’t happen at all.
👉 This means the head and upper body take the impact, increasing the risk of injury.
👶 In children (particularly those with conditions like cerebral palsy or toe walking), frequent backward falls may be a sign of:
• Poor balance and postural control
• Weak core strength
• Delayed protective reflexes
• Difficulty shifting weight forward
⚠️ Because children can’t see behind them, they also can’t prepare for the fall — making it more sudden and more dangerous.
💡 The good news? There are ways we can help:
✔️ Balance and coordination exercises
✔️ Strengthening core and lower limbs
✔️ Supportive footwear or orthotics
✔️ Early intervention to improve safety and confidence
👣 If your child is falling backwards often, it’s worth getting it assessed — early support can make a big difference!
