How good does a bowl of colourful, natural food look? 🌿

A cosy bowl of pasta made with vegetables, herbs and spices simple ingredients brought together into a satisfying meal.

When I talk about eating natural food, I don’t mean following a perfect diet or making everything from scratch. I mean choosing more foods we can recognise and preparing them in ways we genuinely enjoy.

It doesn’t need to be complicated. Start with familiar ingredients, add plenty of flavour and build from there.

This practical, back-to-basics approach is something we’ll be sharing more of through The Wellness Hub.

What natural-food meal do you find yourself making again and again?

A real meal doesn’t need to be complicated.

Eggs, capsicum, and sautéed greens—simple ingredients that make a satisfying meal when I want something quick.

This is one of my regular combinations because it works at any time of the day and takes very little planning.

What’s one simple meal you’re always happy to repeat? 🥚🌶️ 🥬

Plant-centred does not have to mean all or nothing.

Healthy eating is often presented as a choice between extremes.

You are either following the plan perfectly or you have failed. You eat entirely one way or another. Foods are labelled good or bad, and every meal starts to feel like a test.

That approach can make eating well much harder than it needs to be.

A plant-centred way of eating simply means giving plant foods a more generous place in your meals. Vegetables, legumes, fruit, whole grains, nuts, seeds, herbs and spices can form much of the foundation—without requiring everyone to eat exactly the same way.

Instead of asking, “What do I need to remove?”, try asking:

What could I add to this meal?

It might be an extra vegetable, a handful of greens, some beans, fresh herbs or a piece of fruit later in the day.

Small additions made consistently can change the overall pattern of how you eat, without creating another rigid set of rules.

Healthy eating needs to be flexible enough to work in real life. It should leave room for your preferences, culture, budget, health needs and the people you share meals with.

What plant food have you learned to enjoy more as you’ve gotten older? Mine is sweet potatoes☺️

(In this plate, kale, barley, cucumber, sweetpotato)

A simple way to build a satisfying vegetable bowl

Start with a generous layer of hummus, add your favourite roasted vegetables, then top with a drizzle of olive oil, roasted chickpeas and sautéed kale.

The hummus gives the bowl a creamy base, while the roasted chickpeas add texture and make it more satisfying. You can change the vegetables depending on what is in season or what needs to be used from the fridge.

There are no complicated rules—just a simple formula you can make your own:

🌿 Hummus
🥕 Roasted vegetables
🫘 Roasted chickpeas
🥬 Kale or another leafy green
🌶️ Herbs and spices for flavour

This is the kind of meal that feels generous, colourful and enjoyable not like you are simply eating vegetables because you should.

What vegetables would you add to your bowl?

**When did healthy eating become so complicated?**

There is now so much information about food that even deciding what to make for dinner can feel confusing.

We are told to count, measure, track and remove. One week a food is considered healthy; the next week we are warned against it. Before long, eating well starts to feel like something that requires perfect planning, special ingredients and a long list of rules.

But healthy eating can be much simpler.

A nourishing meal does not have to look perfect. It might be a vegetable curry, eggs with greens, salmon and beans, or leftovers brought together in a bowl.

A helpful place to start is to include:

🌿 Plenty of colourful vegetables
🥚 A source of protein
🥑 Some nourishing fats
🍚 A carbohydrate that works well for you
🌶️ Herbs, spices and flavour that make the meal enjoyable

Not every meal needs to contain everything, and one meal does not define your health. What matters more is the pattern you build over time.

Healthy eating should support your life—not become another source of pressure.

Food is not only fuel or energy it actually talks to your body on a cellular level. Every bite you eat sends signals that influence how your body functions.

Here’s how:

Genes & DNA expression: Nutrients can switch certain genes on or off. For example, antioxidants in berries can activate protective pathways that lower inflammation.

Hormones & messengers: Protein increase satiety hormones like leptin and ghrelin, fiber stabilises insulin response, and fats influence hormone production.

Gut signals: What you eat feeds your microbiome, which then produces compounds that affect mood, digestion, immunity, even weight balance.

Inflammation & repair: Omega-3s reduce inflammation, while processed foods can ramp it up.

Cellular function: Vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients act like instructions that tell your cells how to produce energy, repair damage, and detoxify.

So instead of seeing food as just “how many calories does this have?”, it’s more powerful to ask:
👉 “What message is this food sending to my body?”
