We are a group of Occupational Therapists who all have expertise in the treatment and rehabilitation of the hand and upper limb.

Following a 5th metacarpal fracture with multiple complications, this patient experienced significant pain, swelling and stiffness, making everyday tasks challenging.

We fabricated a universal cuff to support independence with daily activities and today, she was able to hold cutlery for the first time since her injury.

This patient was referred to us post left annular ligament repair and radial head replacement sustained in an ATV rollover incident. While elbow extension progressed well, elbow flexion was slow to improve.

We fabricated a dynamic elbow flexion splint, initially using a rubber band for traction but then transitioned to Velstretch® to maintain optimal line of pull as flexion improved. This has resulted in improved elbow flexion from 125° to near full range at 138°.

As hand therapists, we use a various tools to help clients regain hand and upper limb function. One of our favourites is cones.

Examples of how we use cones in our clinics include:
● To increase finger and thumb range of motion after injury

● To improve functional inclusion and coordination

● Serial static splinting for hand contractures
