In celebration of International Yoga Day this month, we are reminded that yoga is never just an individual practice โ€” it is something we share, breathe, and experience together.

At its heart, yoga is about connection. To self. To breath. To presence. And to one another.

Within our Horizon Yoga shalas, this comes alive in a very real way. A space where many come to slow down, reconnect, and find a moment of stillness in the midst of life.

To honour this experience for everyone, we gently hold a few shared intentions:
๐Ÿค We keep the shala as a whisper space, allowing everyone to arrive and settle into practice with ease.
๐Ÿค We honour a phone-free space, supporting presence and inward connection.
๐Ÿค We arrive a little early, so we can transition gently into practice.
๐Ÿค We remember that every personโ€™s practice is different โ€” some come for movement, others for stillness, healing, or quiet reflection. All are welcome.
๐Ÿค We care for the space together, so it can continue to feel like a sanctuary for everyone who enters.

This is how we honour yoga โ€” not only on International Yoga Day, but in every class, every breath, every shared moment.

A very special month for the yoga community ๐Ÿ•‰

This month, we come together to celebrateย ๐ˆ๐ง๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐ง๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐š๐ฅ ๐˜๐จ๐ ๐š ๐ƒ๐š๐ฒ, June 21 โ€” a global recognition of a practice that has transformed the lives of millions of people around the world.

But beyond the poses, the breathwork, and the movement, International Yoga Day offers an opportunity to reflect on a deeper question:ย ๐‘พ๐’‰๐’š ๐’…๐’ ๐’š๐’๐’– ๐’‘๐’“๐’‚๐’„๐’•๐’Š๐’„๐’† ๐’š๐’๐’ˆ๐’‚?

Perhaps you first stepped onto your mat seeking greater flexibility, strength, fitness, or relief from stress. Yet for many of us, yoga becomes so much more than a physical practice.

It becomesย ๐š ๐’๐€๐๐‚๐“๐”๐€๐‘๐˜.

A place to reconnect with ourselves amidst the busyness of life.

A practice that teaches us how to beย present, how toย listen, and how to meet ourselves with greaterย awareness and compassion.

The wordย ๐˜๐Ž๐†๐€ย comes from the Sanskrit word yuj, meaning toย ๐’–๐’๐’Š๐’•๐’†ย or toย ๐’ƒ๐’“๐’Š๐’๐’ˆ ๐’•๐’๐’ˆ๐’†๐’•๐’‰๐’†๐’“.ย At its heart, yoga is an invitation to cultivate a deeper connection between body, mind, heart, and spirit.

At Horizon Yoga, we are constantly evolving, realigning, and listening. Your feedback helps shape our community, and we love collaborating with incredible teachers who bring their unique gifts to our spaces.

Chloe offers an intentional space to step beyond the distractions of the mind and drop into a deeply grounded, embodied state. Moving with the seasons of life and inspired by the cycles of nature, her classes focus on the subtle body, weaving breath, movement, stillness, and mantra. Thoughtful and spacious, Chloeโ€™s teaching invites an energy of devotion, allowing your practice to become a true offering to yourself and a means to deepen your connection with self.

Letโ€™s dive deeper into the meaning behind Ahimsa โ€” our monthly theme ๐Ÿค

Ahimsa is one of the core teachings of yogic philosophy, first outlined in theย Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, a classical text that forms the foundation of the yogic path described byย Patanjali.

In this tradition, Ahimsa is the first of theย Yamasย โ€” the ethical principles of yoga, which sit at the very beginning of the Eight Limbs of Yoga (Ashtanga Yoga). These limbs are not separate practices but a map of inner development โ€” moving from how we live in the world toward deeper states of awareness and presence.

Ahimsa means non-violence, but its meaning is far more subtle than simply โ€œnot causing harm.โ€
It invites us to notice the ways violence can appear internally โ€” in our thoughts, in our self-talk, in how we push, override, or abandon ourselves.

From this perspective, Ahimsa becomes a daily practice of awareness:
โ€ข how we speak to ourselves when we feel like weโ€™ve failed
โ€ข how we relate to discomfort in the body
โ€ข how we respond when life feels overwhelming
โ€ข how gently or harshly we meet our own experience

On the mat, Ahimsa is not about doing less or avoiding challenges.
It is about learning the difference between discipline and force. Between growth and self-punishment.

Traditionally, yoga does not begin with postures. It begins with how we choose to live and relate โ€” with Ahimsa as the foundation for all other practices to unfold safely and honestly.

Somatic healing is a gentle, body-based approach to healing that helps you move beyond just talking about your struggles and begin reconnecting with what your body has been holding onto for years (and is deeply stored in your subconscious mind).
