🚨 Don’t Ignore the BOWEL Signs🚨

Bowel cancer is one of the most treatable cancers when detected early - yet it claims the lives of 103 Australians every week. This week alone, around 286 Australians will be diagnosed with bowel cancer.

Knowing the signs could save your life 👇
🩸 Blood in your poo
🚽 Obvious change in bowel habits
⚖️ Unexplained weight loss
😴 Extreme tiredness
🤍 Lump or swelling in your abdomen

While the risk increases with age, bowel cancer can affect
people of all ages.

✅ Australians aged 45–74 are eligible for a FREE bowel screening kit every 2 years.
✅ If you have symptoms, low iron, ongoing tummy issues, or a family history of bowel cancer — speak to your GP.

Early detection saves lives. Don’t put off getting checked. 💙

Today we celebrate a remarkable achievement by Dr Sean Stevens, who has been awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the 2026 King's Birthday Honours for service to general practice medicine.

Sean's career has been defined by a commitment not only to patient care, but also to strengthening the profession of general practice across Australia.

His contributions have included leadership roles within The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) at both state and national levels, including Chair of the RACGP WA Faculty, Board Director, and most recently Chair of the RACGP Digital Health and Innovation Specific Interest Group. He has also played a significant role in GP education and training, serving as Supervisor of GP Training for 15 years and contributing to numerous professional organisations dedicated to advancing primary care.

Closer to home, Sean is Principal GP and Owner of Grove Medical Victoria Park and Grove Medical Cockburn, where he continues to care for patients while supporting the next generation of healthcare professionals.

Congratulations Sean on this well-deserved recognition. We are incredibly proud to have you leading our team.

🧦🌈 Crazy Socks 4 Docs Day at Grove Medical!

Today Grove Medical Victoria Park and Grove Medical Cockburn are rocking our brightest (and most questionable) socks to support mental health awareness in healthcare 💙Because behind every doctor, nurse, and healthcare worker is a human too. 🫶

At Grove Medical, we believe looking after our team is just as important as looking after our patients. Creating a supportive workplace, checking in on each other, having open conversations, and making space for humour, connection, and kindness all matter. 💬It’s okay to ask for help. 🫶

🦠 What exactly is diphtheria — and should you be concerned?

Recent diphtheria cases reported interstate have prompted many Australians to check whether their vaccinations are up to date.

Diphtheria is a serious bacterial infection that spreads through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. It can cause:
• Sore throat
• Fever
• Swollen glands in the neck
• Difficulty swallowing or breathing
• A thick grey or white coating in the throat

While diphtheria is now rare in Australia thanks to vaccination programs, it can still cause severe illness and, in some cases, be life-threatening.

Most Australians received protection as part of their childhood immunisations, but adults are generally recommended to have a dTpa booster every 10 years to maintain protection against:
✔️ Diphtheria
✔️ Tetanus
✔️ Whooping Cough (Pertussis)

Not sure when your last booster was? You can check your immunisation history through MyGov, Medicare, or the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR).

If you're unsure whether you're due for a booster, book an appointment with one of our doctors to review your vaccination history and discuss your options.

A big congratulations to our colleague Dr Julia Rawlinson from Grove Medical Victoria Park, who has been featured in The Australian.

In her article, Dr Rawlinson shares her perspective on the challenges facing general practice and the importance of ensuring Australians continue to have access to high-quality primary healthcare.

As GPs, we're often the first point of contact for our patients and families, supporting everything from preventative care and chronic disease management to mental health, women's health, and everyday health concerns.

We're proud to see members of the Grove Medical team contributing to important national conversations about the future of healthcare.

Well done Julia! 👏

General practice is in crisis, not because GPs are lazy, but because of chronic underfunding and gaslighting, says a WA doctor in this open letter for the Health Minister. Read the full comment: https://bit.ly/4fONNf0

Not sure if you’re due for your dTpa booster? 💉

With recent diphtheria cases reported interstate, we’ve had more patients asking about their vaccination status - and it’s a great reminder to check if your booster is up to date.

The dTpa vaccine helps protect against:
✔️ Diphtheria
✔️ Tetanus
✔️ Whooping Cough (Pertussis)

Most adults are recommended to have a booster every 10 years.

Not sure when your last vaccine was? You can check your immunisation history through MyGov, Medicare, or the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR).

If you think you may be overdue, book an appointment with one of our friendly GPs to review your vaccination history and discuss whether a booster is appropriate for you.

Our team is here to help. Book an appointment now.

Today, we celebrate the doctors who show up every single day to care for our community with compassion, knowledge, and heart. 💙

At Grove Medical Cockburn, our doctors do so much more than diagnose and prescribe. They listen. They advocate. They create safe spaces where patients feel heard, respected, and genuinely cared for.

From childhood immunisations and family medicine to menopause management, mental health support, chronic disease care, skin checks, antenatal care, and inclusive LGBTQIA+ healthcare - our doctors are here for the big moments, the difficult moments, and everything in between.

We’re incredibly proud to have built a practice that values longer appointments, patient-centred care, and meaningful relationships with our community.

This year, we were also honoured to welcome Hon David Scaife MLA (Member for Cockburn) to Grove Medical to celebrate World Family Doctor Day and highlight the important role general practice plays in supporting our community. We loved sharing some of the projects and services we’re passionate about, including menopause management, DVA CVC program, complimentary care services, and our ongoing commitment to inclusive healthcare initiatives.

Happy World Family Doctor Day to our incredible doctors - thank you for the care, support, and difference you make in the lives of our patients and community every single day. 👩‍⚕️👨‍⚕️✨
