This obituary of “Aunt Eliza” Revels, lifelong slave and servant of my 4x great-grandmother Margaret Lea (wife of General Samuel Houston), perfectly encapsulates the complex relationships between slaveowners and enslaved people. Like most of history, there was a lot more murky grey area than people want to think about.

OBVIOUSLY this does not mean slavery is acceptable, and I am not running apologetics for it. I am just trying to highlight how messy and complicated history is, especially when - as genealogists do - we are dealing with individuals, families and relationships between people on a granular level.

When I hit a brick wall while researching, one of my favourite places to check is FamilySearch online library. Chances are there was a brilliant genealogist 100 years ago who compiled a family history book or journal that just might have the answer you’re looking for.

A photograph of my 3x great-grandfather, Joseph Clay Stiles Morrow, that I have not previously seen. It was published in the newspaper alongside his obituary. I must say I do see a bit of family resemblance in him.
