When you’re 19 or 20, looking after your body doesn’t always feel urgent.

You feel good.

You recover quickly.

There’s another season coming.

And spending money on learning how to fuel and recover properly probably isn’t as exciting as spending it on everything else.

Then suddenly you’ve got something you didn’t have back then.

Hindsight.

A friend of mine played professionally for more than a decade and told me he wishes he’d invested more into this stuff earlier.

Would it have changed how long his career lasted?

Nobody can know that.

But I think there’s a lesson in wishing you’d taken care of something earlier rather than once your body forced you to.

Being battered for two days after every game shouldn’t automatically be written off as:

“That’s just football.”

Especially when it’s affecting what you can do on Monday or Tuesday.

Heavy legs.
Lower training intensity.
Struggling to get through your normal minutes.

Sometimes the match has simply taken a lot out of you.

But sometimes you’re making the recovery harder than it needs to be because what goes back in afterwards doesn’t match what the game took out.

Don’t just accept feeling s**t because you’ve always felt s**t.

Played 90 minutes and opened the fridge thinking "what the f**k do I eat now?"

Most recovery advice tells you what to eat after a generic hard session. Football doesn't work like that.

25 off the bench is not the same as a full 90. Pitch and gym is not the same as a tactical session. A game in three days is not the same as a week off.

Different situations. Different recovery needs.

That's why I built my AI Recovery tool. You tell it what you've just done and what you've got coming. It tells you what your body needs next.

You're technically on the pitch. But are you actually training?

Two players. Three sessions each. One's executing properly. One's half a yard off it the whole week.

They've both "trained three times." They haven't had the same week.

Matchday performance isn't built only on Saturday. It's built in the hundreds of minutes you spend training at the speed and intensity you want to reproduce on Saturday.

Poor recovery doesn't just make you feel worse. It takes minutes away from the gaffer seeing what you can actually do.

Half your squad is one good meal plan away from taking your spot. Not more talented, not working harder in the gym, just better fuelled and recovering faster than you week to week.

Dance while you can, because the gap closes faster than most players expect once someone else in the squad sorts this out.

Save this as your reminder to stay ahead of it.

Saturday. Midweek. Saturday again. And your body's hanging on for dear life.

One National League player I worked with had convinced himself his body just couldn't handle the schedule.

The fixture list wasn't going to change. So his nutrition had to.

We built it around the actual games coming that week. Not a generic plan. Around what his body had just been through and what it had to do next.

He got through the run and played his part when it mattered.

The worst part isn't feeling tired. It's looking like a worse footballer than you actually are.

The gaffer doesn't feel your legs. He sees your first touch bouncing off you. He sees you getting half a yard taken off you. He sees the balls you're giving away.

You know exactly what you want to do. Your body's just a fraction behind it.

And that's the bit that kills you. Not the soreness. The fact that the session he's watching isn't actually you.

Hydration starts here, not in the warm up, not at kickoff, and definitely not when you feel thirsty.

By the time you feel thirsty on matchday, you're already behind, performance already compromised before you've even stepped on the pitch. This is a 48 hour process that starts from Thursday for a Saturday game, not something you fix with a bottle of water an hour before kickoff.

Save this, screenshot it, and actually start it 48 hours out next week.

Go for the pint. Just do this first.

Nobody's telling you to sit at home with a recovery shake every Saturday night. You've got mates. You've got a life.

But going straight from the final whistle to five pints having eaten nothing? You've given your body absolutely nothing to work with.

Get some carbs in. Get some protein in. Start replacing your fluids.

Then go enjoy yourself.

One right and one wrong still leaves you better off than two wrongs.
