Anatomy Info:🩸 Sesamoid Bones: Orchestrators of Motion

Nestled within tendons, sesamoid bones alter the angle of tendons as they pass over joints. They act like pulleys! This modification enhances the mechanical advantage of the tendon, allowing it to exert more force with less effort. This is particularly crucial in weight-bearing joints like the foot, aiding in activities such as walking, running, and jumping. They also provide a smooth surface for the tendons to glide over, which minimises wear and tear on the tendon and joint and the sesamoids go above and beyond acting as a buffer, absorbing force so the tendon doesn’t have to.

Of course, things sometimes go wrong: Conditions like sesamoiditis, an inflammation of these small bones, can arise due to overuse or trauma, resulting in pain and compromised mobility.

That’s where we come in. If things just don’t feel as powerful, as smooth or as easy as you move your feet, hands, knees (or any part of you) contact us on [email protected]. The osteopaths at Active Osteopathy and Podiatry are here to help.

Do you do a lot of manual lifting at work? Let's ensure you're lifting like a pro! 🚀

🤔 Lift Smart, Lift Well: Our osteopaths recommend maintaining a stable base, bending your knees and hips whilst keeping a straight back, and keeping the load close to your body. This technique minimises strain on your back and joints. 💪

🌈 4 Tips for Safe Lifting:

- Know your limits and ask for help with heavy items.
- Avoid twisting - if turning is necessary, pivot your entire body instead of twisting your spine.
- Take breaks to avoid fatigue and strain.
- Prioritise good posture to distribute weight evenly.

And of course, whether you're lifting or not keep your core strong and your spine supple.

👩‍⚕️ Your Wellness Matters: If lifting is causing discomfort, it's time to address it. Email us at [email protected] to book an appointment with the osteopaths at Active Osteopathy and Podiatry Let's get to work to ensure your work doesn't hurt you!

🧠 Migraines vs. Tension-Type Headaches: A Tale of Two Pains

Migraines originate from deep within the brain, triggering the release of inflammatory substances around nerves and blood vessels. It is most common amongst women, according to WHO by a factor of about 2:1, because of hormonal influences. Tension-type headaches, on the other hand, often stem from muscle tension.

📈 Prevalence: Migraines, with their distinctive throbbing pain, affect around 12% of the population. Tension-type headaches, characterised by a squeezing or pressure sensation, are more common, impacting a whopping 30-80% of people at some point.

Feeling the squeeze or the throb? 📧 Email us for an appointment on [email protected]. The osteopaths at Active Osteopathy and Podiatry may be able to help with a tailored treatment plan.

Word of the Day: Pterygoid.

Is it just us or does it sound like a dinosaur thing... but, no - it's an anatomy thing... "Pteryx" (wing) and "eidos" (form) are more about the wing-like architecture of the Pterygoid muscles than flight! ✨

Situated deep within the jaw, the medial Pterygoid aids in closing the jaw and is instrumental in the initial phase of mastication (another dinosaur sounding word...📚), while the lateral Pterygoid, with its two heads, facilitates jaw opening and helps with biting and grinding.

It's intricate and beautiful - of course things sometimes go wrong 👎. Tensions or spasms in these muscles may contribute to jaw pain, difficulty in opening or closing the mouth, disturbances in bite alignment, and even chronic headaches. What can you do? You can message us 📧 on [email protected] to make an appointment at Active Osteopathy and Podiatry. We're here to help (and to enjoy words).
