Respiratory infections have been hanging around a little longer this year 🫠 Influenza and COVID-19 cases are now increasing in Victoria, while RSV remains at elevated levels after peaking in July.

If you're unwell, or have signs and symptoms of respiratory infections, please only attend for Urgent Care and postpone your visit to areas like Barrabill House Aged Care.

The good news? It’s not too late to protect yourself. Flu vaccination is still widely available. And the boring-but-effective stuff still counts: wash your hands, cover coughs and sneezes, and stay home when you’re sick.

Basically: respiratory illnesses might be overstaying their welcome, but we don’t have to invite them in. 🤧

AusAlert is a new national warning system that uses the latest technology to send emergency messages to compatible mobile devices. It’s a fast and reliable way to help people be informed and better prepared during local and national emergencies.

Testing is happening at 2pm AEST on Monday 27th July.

The Virtual Emergency Department (formerly VVED) has a new name and look.
The Department and Northern Health are making this change in response to research with Victorian consumers. The change aligns the service more closely with our Urgent Care category and makes it an endorsed service of the Victorian Government.

The service remains the same: free, 24/7 urgent care for non life threatening health concerns. Available to anyone in Victoria, it connects consumers with emergency doctors and nurses via video call.

All clinical pathways, eligibility, hours and access remain unchanged. The new URL is www.ved.vic.gov.au with the previous URL continuing to work.

Australia’s new national emergency alert system will be tested on 27 July to make sure it works during emergencies like natural disasters.

During the test, a loud sound will play on all compatible devices, even if they are on silent or ‘do not disturb’. If a device is turned off, the alert will sound when it is switched back on.

If you use a hidden or safety phone and are affected by domestic, family and sexual violence it’s important you plan ahead. 1800RESPECT counsellors can help you think through your options and plan what feels safest for you.

Call 1800 737 732, text 0458 737 732 or visit www.1800respect.org.au for online chat and video call services.

Preceptor on the Month
Congratulations to Rachel Cooney, our very first recipient of the Preceptor of the Month Award!

Nominated by our students, this award recognises the outstanding support, guidance and learning opportunities provided to students during their placement at Seymour Health.

Students praised Rachel for being “relaxed, calm, patient and thorough,” creating a supportive learning environment where they felt comfortable asking questions and developing their skills. They also highlighted the many opportunities provided to learn within their scope of practice, describing Rachel as “amazing to work with,” “approachable,” and someone who “made it all make sense.”

One student summed it up perfectly, saying, “She taught me so much in so little time and actually made it make sense! Great nurse!”

We are fortunate to have dedicated staff who invest their time, knowledge and experience into developing the next generation of healthcare professionals. Thank you, Rachel, for your commitment to student learning and congratulations on this well-deserved recognition.

The award includes a voucher from Gnarly Neighbours, proudly presented in recognition of this achievement. 🎉
