One of the biggest misconceptions I see in the healing and spiritual space is the idea that absorbing other people's emotions, carrying their pain, or constantly feeling overwhelmed by their energy is a sign of a gift.
In my experience, many people who identify as empaths are not experiencing a gift at all.
They are experiencing a pattern of over-engagement. A pattern that often begins in childhood and teaches someone to monitor, absorb, anticipate, and carry the emotional states of the people around them.
Over time, that pattern can become exhausting.
It can affect relationships, healing, nervous system regulation, energetic wellbeing, and a person's ability to remain connected to themselves.
