Finding a breakfast that's both convenient and nutritious can be a challenge.

If cereal is your go-to, it's worth taking a closer look at the nutrition panel. Small differences between products can have a big impact on how much protein you're actually getting.

To help make choosing easier, Dr. Angela explains what to look for in a high-protein breakfast cereal and shares practical ways to boost the protein in your morning routine.

"I have this problem where I'm constantly thinking about food, in my head. Where will we eat? What will we eat? It's exhausting!"

This is just one breakthrough that an Enlighten Me member shared 💡

You see, weight loss is not always simple as ‘eat less, move more’.

Often there is a need to take a deeper look as to the underlying drivers in a person’s individual situation.

A breakfast cereal hack you'll want to try 🥣✨

Love your morning cereal but wish it kept you feeling fuller for longer?

Instead of pouring on regular milk, try mixing one scoop of the Vanilla Enlighten Me Shake with water to create a high-protein milk alternative. It's a simple swap that helps increase the protein while reducing the overall carbohydrate content of your breakfast, so you can still enjoy your favourite cereal with a little more staying power.

Dr. Angela has also shared why this simple breakfast hack can be a practical way to support your protein intake without giving up the foods you enjoy.

A joy to step back in time today at the Kandos Museum and listen to music on an original Edison phonograph.

Hand-cranked and playing wax cylinders, it offers a glimpse into a time before flat records. Early recordings were captured live, directly onto wax - preserving performances in a way that still feels remarkably intimate today.

History is even better when you can hear it.

At the recent Women’s Health Essentials in Primary Care conference, a key question was explored:

What exactly is the link between menopause and weight?

Dr. Angela broke it down to one important hormone - oestrogen.

But the role of oestrogen goes far beyond what many people realise.

It’s not just produced in the ovaries.
It acts throughout the entire body.

So when oestrogen levels decline during menopause, the effects are not isolated.

They are systemic.

This helps explain why many women notice:
Weight gain, particularly around the abdomen
Changes in energy and appetite
A shift in how their body responds to food and exercise

And this is where a more informed, patient-centred approach becomes essential:
✔️ Understanding the hormonal drivers behind weight changes
✔️ Supporting metabolic health through each life stage
✔️ Moving away from blame, towards evidence-based care

Because when we understand the “why”, we can better support the “how”.

🎧 New podcast episode available for GPs and health professionals

The patient who seeks help with their weight isn’t always the patient you might expect.

I wonder whether, as GPs, we sometimes carry a mental picture of who we assume that patient is.

In reality, the picture is often far more nuanced.

Sometimes the patient sitting in front of us is already exercising regularly, tracking their nutrition or body composition and seemingly doing everything right.

Yet despite all those efforts, they recognise that something has changed, even if neither of us can yet fully explain why.

Not because they’re looking for a diet or lacking motivation, but because they’re searching for an explanation.

It makes me wonder whether we sometimes need to look beyond the size, shape and BMI of our patients and instead have a deeper conversation to better understand their metabolic risk.

One of the patient cases that prompted this reflection came from a discussion on weight management in women of reproductive age that I recently facilitated with Dr Georgia Rigas and A/Prof Samantha Hocking.

It certainly challenged some of my own assumptions about who seeks help with their weight and, perhaps more importantly, why.

The discussion is now available as a podcast episode for anyone who would like to explore this topic further.

The role of the Australian GP is far broader than many people realise.

Reading through the nominations for the Patients Australia Patient’s Choice Awards has been a genuine privilege. The stories are thoughtful, moving, and a beautiful reminder that there isn’t one way to be a GP.

Some dedicate their careers to continuity of care. Others are recognised for advocacy, diagnostic persistence, end of life care, or simply creating a space where patients feel heard and supported.

As healthcare evolves, so too does the role of the GP.

For me, that journey has increasingly extended beyond the traditional consulting room into clinician education, multidisciplinary collaboration, and building new models of Care through Enlighten Me.

It may look different, but it comes from the same place: listening to patients, recognising unmet needs, and trying to build better care around them.

I am incredibly honoured to be nominated alongside such an inspiring group of colleagues.

If you have a moment, I encourage you to read the stories behind this remarkable group of nominees. They are a wonderful reminder of the breath, humanity and impact of Australian general practice.

Thank you to Patients Australia, Arrotex Pharmaceuticals and Chiesi Australia for recognising the work of GPs across Australia.
