Eastside Speech Solutions

Eastside Speech Solutions A vibrant Speech Pathology practice in Randwick, Sydney. Eastside Speech Solutions is passionate about helping people to communicate better.

Every day we witness how lives are transformed when a person's ability to speak and understand dramatically improves. One in seven Australians experience some form of communication disability during their lifetime. Developing and maintaining the ability to communicate is a journey we all take starting as a toddler first mimicking our parents, to a preschooler learning to speak smoothly and correctly without stuttering, then as a school aged child we begin to read and speak with confidence through to becoming an adult who relies on clear speech for work and play. Better communication is what we are all about! The team at Eastside Speech understand that sometimes the journey to good communication is not easy and believe that effective, positive speech therapy can be the key to improved confidence at school, in work and in relationships. We offer a wide range of speech therapies to assist with literacy, difficulties saying sounds correctly (pronunciation), stuttering, apraxia, language comprehension or language delay, accent modification and accent reduction as well as working with those suffering communication impairment as a result of brain injury, stroke or other neurological conditions. Eastside Speech Solutions understands that adults and children are different and we tailor our therapy sessions to accommodate individual's needs and abilities. The team's experience allows us to focus our speech therapy to support and develop good communication regardless of whether we are helping adults or preschoolers, native speakers or clients from overseas. Our clients reap the benefits of the teamwork of a group of therapists with a broad range of experience. Draw, Talk, Learn: The Power of Jumbo Crayons! ๐Ÿ–๏ธ๐ŸŽจ

Did you know that a simple box of jumbo crayons can be a great tool for supporting your childโ€™s speech and language development?

Jumbo crayons are easier for little hands to hold, making drawing fun while creating lots of opportunities to communicate together.

While colouring, try:
๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Following instructions: โ€œBefore you draw a circle, draw a star.โ€
๐Ÿ  Learning concepts: โ€œDraw a big house next to a small tree.โ€
๐ŸŒˆ Building vocabulary: โ€œTell me about your picture.โ€
๐Ÿ“– Practising sequencing: โ€œWhat did you draw first?โ€
๐Ÿ’ฌ Expanding sentences: Child: โ€œDog.โ€ Adult: โ€œYes, the brown dog is running in the park!โ€
๐Ÿค” Encouraging conversation: โ€œWhy did you choose those colours?โ€

Even 10โ€“15 minutes of drawing together can support listening, understanding, vocabulary, sentence development and confidence with communication.

So grab those crayons and start chatting! ๐Ÿ’›

๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿ“‹ Visual Schedules: See it. Say it. Do it!

Did you know that visual schedules can help children understand, remember and use language more effectively?

Many children understand what they see more easily than what they hear. A simple visual schedule can reduce the need for repeated verbal reminders and help children follow routines with greater confidence. โœจ๐ŸŒŸ

Visual schedules can support:
๐Ÿ‘‚ Following directions
๐Ÿ”ข Understanding what happens first, next and last
โฐ Learning sequencing and time concepts
๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Building vocabulary through everyday routines
๐ŸŒฑ Encouraging independence and communication

The best part? You donโ€™t need fancy resources! โœจ๐Ÿ

Try making a simple schedule at home:
1๏ธโƒฃ Choose a routine (e.g. getting ready for school or bedtime)
2๏ธโƒฃ Draw simple pictures or print photos on your phone
3๏ธโƒฃ Place them in order:
๐Ÿ‘• Get dressed
๐Ÿฅฃ Eat breakfast
๐Ÿชฅ Brush teeth
๐Ÿ‘Ÿ Put on shoes
๐ŸŽ’ Go to school

As each step is finished, point to the picture and say:
๐Ÿ‘‰ โ€œFirst we got dressed. Next, we brush our teeth.โ€

๐Ÿ’ก Keep your language simple and consistent, and encourage your child to point to or talk about what comes next.

๐Ÿ’› Remember, a visual schedule isnโ€™t just about keeping a routineโ€”itโ€™s a powerful communication tool that helps children understand language, express themselves and become more confident communicators. ๐ŸŒŸ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ

Phonological Awareness: The Foundation for Reading! โ˜‚๏ธ๐Ÿ“šโœจ

Did you know that phonological awareness is like an umbrella that protects your childโ€™s reading development? Each section of this umbrella represents an important stage in their literacy journey! ๐ŸŒŸ

1๏ธโƒฃ Word Level: Understanding how words are made up of sounds
2๏ธโƒฃ Syllable Level: Breaking words into syllables to improve fluency
3๏ธโƒฃ Onset & Rhyme Level: Recognizing the beginning sounds (onsets) and rhyming parts of words
4๏ธโƒฃ Phonemic Awareness Level: Mastering the ability to hear and manipulate individual sounds in words (phonemes)

๐Ÿ’ก These stages are all key to building strong reading and writing skills! Playful activities at home, like clapping syllables or rhyming games, can help your child strengthen these skills every day!

Supporting communication in early childhood classrooms is all about creating a comfortable, engaging environment. So, how do we help every child thrive, no matter how they communicate?

1๏ธโƒฃ Limit pressure to talk โ€“ Many kids with communication challenges are aware of their difficulties. Pushing them to respond verbally can actually reduce communication. Instead, give them space and time to express themselves on their terms. ๐ŸŒŸ
2๏ธโƒฃ Create opportunities for non-verbal participation โ€“ Can they point to an answer instead of speaking? Use actions or gestures? Give them options that allow them to be part of the conversation without feeling pressured. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿคฒ
3๏ธโƒฃ Utilize alternative forms of communication โ€“ ASL signs, gestures, and picture boards can open up a whole new world of communication! Tools like a 'core board' with words like 'help', 'more', or 'water' can make a big difference. ๐Ÿ–ผ๏ธโœ‹
4๏ธโƒฃ Create a visual schedule โ€“ Help kids understand their day with picture-based schedules. It helps them feel more in control and reduces anxiety during transitions. ๐Ÿ“…๐Ÿ‘€
5๏ธโƒฃ Use fewer questions, more modeling โ€“ Instead of asking a question, model the words they need to hear. Try offering choices instead of open-ended questions to make communication easier and less stressful. ๐Ÿ’ก๐Ÿ’ฌ

๐ŸŽจ๐ŸŒˆ A set of watercolours can help grow your child's speech and language skills!

As you paint together, encourage your child to:
๐Ÿ–Œ๏ธ Describe what they see using lots of describing words (e.g. โœจ shiny, ๐Ÿชจ bumpy, ๐Ÿฆ• enormous, ๐ŸŒธ colourful)
๐Ÿ’ญ Explain their ideas: "Why did you choose those colours?"
๐Ÿ”ฎ Predict: "What do you think will happen when we mix these colours?"
๐Ÿ“– Tell a story about their painting: "Who lives here? What happens next?"
๐Ÿ” Compare colours, objects and ideas: "How are these two flowers different?" ๐ŸŒท๐ŸŒผ

Every brushstroke is an opportunity to build vocabulary, develop longer sentences, strengthen storytelling skills, and enjoy meaningful conversations together ๐Ÿ’–๐ŸŒŸ

Here's how to help kids communicate for different reasons! โฌ‡๏ธ

By modeling language during our everyday interactions, we can teach kids to express themselves for a variety of pragmatic functions. ๐Ÿ™Œ Yes, itโ€™s that simple!

Pay attention to the ways theyโ€™re already communicating and "map" the words they need to match their actions. This strategy helps build their vocabulary and understanding. โœจ

๐Ÿ“ธ Examples:
๐Ÿ”น Requesting: If a child pulls you to the door, you say, "Letโ€™s go out!"
๐Ÿ”น Protesting: If a child cries and covers their nose when you offer a quesadilla, you say, โ€œI donโ€™t like it! Itโ€™s yucky!โ€
๐Ÿ”น Showing: If a child hands you a toy, you say, โ€œLook at this! Itโ€™s a ______.โ€

Weโ€™ve all been there - repeating "use your words" when communication breaks down. But did you know that phrase can actually add frustration, especially for kids who are already struggling to express themselves? ๐Ÿ˜…

Sometimes children canโ€™t access their words in the moment, even if they have the skills. Instead of staying stuck in the "use your words" loop, try these more supportive alternatives to help kids communicate more effectively:

โœจ Get face-to-face: Engage at their level to show youโ€™re truly present
โœจ Model without expectation: Demonstrate the words you want to hear, but without pressuring them to respond
โœจ Interpret their message: Acknowledge what they might be trying to communicate, even if itโ€™s not clear
โœจ Offer choices: Giving options can encourage more interaction and decision-making
โœจ Provide adequate wait time: Allow kids the space to process and respond at their own pace
โœจ Focus on co-regulation: Help them manage frustration by staying calm and centered

These small changes can make a big difference in communicationโ€”and reduce stress for both kids and adults! ๐Ÿ™Œ
