👀 Your child’s first eye test is the first step towards a lifetime of healthy vision. 🫶

Many children don’t realise they have a vision problem — and some may not know how to describe what they’re experiencing. That’s why regular eye examinations are so important, even when everything seems fine.

📱 With screens becoming part of everyday life from a younger age, it’s important to be mindful of the impact of extended close-up work. Excessive screen time can contribute to myopia (short-sightedness), eye strain, and dry, uncomfortable eyes.

📚 Reading, learning, and homework are all essential, but remember the 20-20 rule:
Every 20 minutes, encourage children and teens to take a short break and look into the distance to relax their focusing muscles.

✨ Other simple ways to support healthy eyes:
✔️ Keep screens and close-up work at least an arm’s length away
✔️ Encourage regular outdoor time
✔️ Aim to keep recreational screen time to around two hours or less per day outside of school where possible

If your child is yet to have an eyetest or if it’s been a while since your child’s last appointment — don’t wait until you notice signs of eye strain, squinting or trouble with focusing, be ahead of the game and protect their eyes starting today.

Is your child struggling with their vision? 👀 The earlier myopia is detected, the more can be done to manage it and help slow its progression. Young children often don’t realise they have vision problems or may not be able to explain them, which makes regular eye examinations especially important.

With increasing use of devices at younger ages, it’s important to be aware that excessive screen time is linked to myopia, eye strain, and dry eye symptoms.

Reading, learning on screens, and homework are all important, but children and teens should take a short break from close-up work every 20 minutes to rest their focusing muscles. Keeping at least a forearm’s length between the eyes and near work can also help reduce strain and support healthy vision.

🫶In an ideal world, school-aged children and teenagers should limit recreational screen time to no more than two hours per day outside of school.
