New Episode of 'Inside Door2' out now on Spotify - The Messy Middle of Eating Disorder Recovery:

Recovery is often talked about as though wanting to recover should be enough. But what happens when you desperately want your life back — and yet another part of you is screaming just as loudly to stay exactly where you are?

In this episode 18-year-old Lucy finds herself deep in the messy middle of eating disorder recovery. With the final weeks of secondary school approaching and so much of life waiting on the other side, surely now should be the time to be motivated to recover… right?

Except recovery isn't that simple.

Lucy can see the life she wants. She can feel frustrated by being stuck. She can desperately want to move forward. And yet she describes another part of herself — her Negative Mind demanding attention.

So how do you trust yourself when your own voice can so easily be overwhelmed by the voice of the NM?

And how do you make decisions about recovery when different parts of you want completely different things?

Alongside Lucy is her mum, Alison, who has made an enormous shift in the way she supports her daughter. Moving away from the anxiety-driven certainty of FBT approaches and the belief that she needed to make recovery happen, Alison has learned to **meet Lucy where she is**.

Together, Lucy and Alison explore what it means to stay connected through uncertainty rather than trying to force an outcome.

This is a conversation about being stuck without being hopeless, wanting recovery without yet being ready for every part of it, learning to distinguish the Self from the NM, and discovering that sometimes the most powerful thing a carer can do is stop trying to win the battle and start helping their loved one hear their own voice again.

Because the messy middle isn't necessarily a failure of recovery.

Sometimes, it is where the real work of finding yourself begins.

Everything.
Because recovery isn't just about changing behaviours. It's about voice, trust, connection, and autonomy. At Door2, we don't do recovery to the insider.

WE BUILD IT WITH THEM.

Too often, people are judged by what others see.

But what if what we're seeing is only the visible part of something much bigger?

The story doesn't end where our view does. So before we decide what someone needs, perhaps we need to get curious about what we don't yet know.

What's something people can't see about your experience?

Sometimes connection looks like a silent thumbs up.

For many of our Insiders living with eating disorders, finding their voice isn't easy.

Sometimes it starts with a nod, a look, or that tiny thumbs up.

Watching an Insider find a voice and then helping their families and carers understand what's really happening on the inside of an eating disorder, is one of the most meaningful parts of what we do.

Because when someone finally has a way to communicate their experience, everyone around them can begin to respond differently.

And that's what makes Door2 so powerful.

We learn to adapt.
To read the room.
To rehearse.
To hide the parts that don't fit.

And sometimes, we're so good at it that no one notices the cost.

Until the effort of being acceptable becomes exhausting.

What if belonging meant there was nothing to hide?

That's the world we're asking for.

Door2 Asks... Imaging if..

Play is often one of the first things we lose when life becomes about surviving.

Not because we don’t want joy.
But because our bodies are busy protecting us.

Recovery is not just about returning to behaviours that look “healthy”.
It’s about returning to the parts of ourselves that make us feel alive.

Door2 Asks... What if we’ve been missing the most important voice in eating disorder treatment?
The person experiencing it.

Lived experience isn’t an optional extra.
It’s expertise.

The people navigating eating disorders every day hold knowledge that cannot be learnt from a textbook alone.

When we combine clinical expertise with lived experience, we create care that sees the whole person-not just the symptoms.

The people living it hold answers we cannot afford to ignore.
Share this with someone who believes lived experience belongs at the table.
