How dust strains your eyes:

Dust particles are tiny, rough, and everywhere. When they land on your eye, they cause problems fast.

What dust does to your eyes:

1. *Creates micro-scratches*
Dust isn’t smooth. When it sits on your eye surface, every blink drags those particles across your cornea. That causes a gritty, “sand in my eye” feeling and mild pain.

2. *Triggers inflammation*
Your eye sees dust as something foreign. It releases histamines to flush it out. Result: redness, swelling, itching, and watery eyes. Your eyes work overtime trying to clean themselves.

3. *Disrupts your tear film*
Dust breaks up the smooth tear layer that keeps your eye moist and clear. With the tear film broken, light scatters more. So you get blurry vision and have to strain to focus. That’s eye fatigue.

4. *Makes you rub and blink more*
Dust makes you uncomfortable, so you blink harder and rub more. Rubbing adds friction + can push dust deeper. More blinking + rubbing = tired eye muscles and headaches by end of day.

*Key signs dust is straining your eyes:*
Gritty or scratchy feeling
Red, watery eyes
Blurry vision that improves after blinking/rinsing
Light sensitivity

Quick relief:
Don’t rub. Rinse with clean water or preservative-free artificial tears to flush particles out.
Blink deliberately to move tears over the surface.

If redness, pain, or blur lasts more than a day after flushing, get it checked. A scratched cornea needs treatment.

How Botswana dry air strains your eyes:

Dry air has very low moisture. Your eyes rely on a thin tear film to stay moist, clear, and comfortable.

*What dry air does to your eyes:*

1. *Speeds up tear evaporation*
In normal humidity your tear film lasts 10-15 seconds between blinks. In Botswana’s dry air it can break up in 4-5 seconds. When the tear film breaks, the surface of your eye dries out and gets exposed.

2. *Causes friction when you blink*
A dry eye surface means your eyelid drags instead of gliding. That causes the gritty, scratchy feeling and eye fatigue by midday.

3. *Forces your eyes to work harder*
When the surface is dry, light scatters more. Your eyes strain to focus and keep images sharp. Result: blurry vision that clears after a blink, plus tired eyes and mild headaches.

4. *Triggers watery eyes*
Your eyes detect dryness as damage. So they overcompensate and produce excess watery tears. Those tears don’t have the right oils to stay on the eye, so dryness continues in a cycle.

*Key signs of dry air strain:*
Eyes feel tight or tired by afternoon
Vision blurs then clears when you blink
Stinging or burning without a clear reason

The fix starts with adding moisture back. Preservative-free artificial tears help replace what dry air takes away.
