The Cost of a Care Home Is Changing Too

For families, understanding the care setting also means understanding the financial side.

Alberta has increased the maximum accommodation charges for continuing-care homes by 1.8%, effective August 1, 2026, as part of its annual inflation adjustment.

The province publishes maximum daily amounts based on room type—including shared rooms, private rooms and suites.

But there's an important distinction:

A provincial maximum isn't necessarily the amount every resident pays.

Families may also need to understand the provider's actual rate, room category, contract, benefits and other costs.

As more families navigate continuing care, financial literacy becomes part of care planning.

Knowing what care costs is part of knowing how to plan for it.

Ontario Is Investing in the People Behind Long-Term Care

Better care requires more than buildings. It requires people.

The Government of Ontario is investing nearly $75 million in programs designed to train thousands of students and workers for careers in long-term care.

The funding includes support for nursing education, PSW training, Francophone PSW programs, Indigenous health-education programs and professional development.

One program alone is expected to help 6,000 more people complete PSW training.

This matters because Canada's aging population will place increasing pressure on the people providing hands-on care.

Workforce development isn't simply an employment issue.

It's a care-quality issue.

What If Hospital Care Could Follow You Home?

Going home from hospital doesn't always mean recovery is over.

A program from William Osler Health System, delivered in partnership with Bayshore HealthCare, is showing what a more coordinated transition can look like.

Through Osler@Home, eligible older adults can receive coordinated care at home for up to 16 weeks after hospital discharge—or support designed to help avoid an unnecessary hospital admission.

In 2025/26, the program served 898 patients, including 748 people aged 65 and older. More than three-quarters of patients in its two program streams remained at home following care.

The bigger lesson?

Recovery doesn't have to stop at the hospital door.

A successful transition home can involve nursing, rehabilitation, personal support, equipment, nutrition and help navigating community services.

The future of elder care may be less about where care happens—and more about how well the pieces connect.
