How you make someone feel matters.

My partner always said this to and as trainers, we’re not just here to count reps, correct form, or make people sweat. We have an opportunity every time someone walks through that door to make them feel a little better about themselves.

So today, make it a goal to make someone feel good.

Give someone a genuine compliment. Encourage the person who’s struggling. Smile at someone who may need it. Let somebody know that you noticed their effort.

Because people might not remember every exercise you had them do, but they’ll remember that when they were around you, they felt stronger, more confident, and better about themselves.

So make today the day you make someone feel good about who they are.

For me, staying strong at 56 is about more than what happens in the gym. It’s about having the strength, mobility and energy to enjoy life outside of it too.

Go for the walk. Ride the bike. Go swimming. Play with the kids or grandkids. Get outside. Keep moving.

Building muscle and strength matters, but so does having a body that allows you to keep doing the things that make you happy.

You don’t have to be perfect. You just have to keep moving and keep challenging yourself in ways that make sense for you.

After 45, I’m not interested in doing less. I’m interested in doing what keeps me strong, capable and independent.

These are 5 things I wouldn’t skip:

💪🏾 Strength training — maintain muscle and strength
🥗 Protein — support muscle growth and recovery
❤️ Cardio — keep your cardiovascular system working
🧘 Mobility + balance — stay mobile and capable
😴 Recovery — because progress happens outside the workout too

And no, you don’t have to do burpees to be fit after 45. 😂

But you do need to challenge your body in ways that match your goals and your abilities.

I’m 56, plant-based, and still training to build muscle, strength and longevity.

Your age is a reason to train smarter — not a reason to stop training.

Building muscle after 45 isn’t just about lifting weights.

You need to train consistently, eat enough, get enough protein, and give your body time to recover.

As a vegan, my meals include foods like tofu, plant-based protein milk, seeds, nuts and plenty of fruits and vegetables.

You don’t need a perfect diet.

You need to consistently give your body what it needs to support the work you’re asking it to do.

Train. Eat. Recover. Repeat.

I’m not posting this to show off. I’m posting it because I’m proud of the progress.

Strength doesn’t have an expiration date.

A few years ago, I never would have imagined putting 209 pounds on my back and squatting it for 8 reps. But consistent training, progressive overload, recovery and patience add up.

If you’re over 45, don’t assume getting older means getting weaker.

Give your body a reason to stay strong.

This is 56. And I’m not done yet. 🏋🏾

Burpees, chair burpees and squat-to-stands aren’t about making seniors exhausted. They’re about training strength, coordination, balance, speed and agility — the things that help people stay capable and independent.

The key is modifying the movement to the person, not eliminating the challenge because of their age.

You can’t out-train poor recovery.

Last week we talked about progressive overload — giving your muscles a reason to adapt.

But the work doesn’t stop when you leave the gym.

Your body needs recovery to repair, adapt, and come back stronger.

Sleep. Nutrition. Rest days. Recovery between workouts.

And especially after 45, more training isn’t automatically better.

Train hard. Recover hard. Get stronger. 💪🏾🦵🏾💪🏾
