"In a living classroom, you learn with your hands, your eyes and your heart.” Sam Whitlow is a personal support worker who provided their powerful perspective on the value of learning in the living classroom.

St. Joseph’s Lifecare Centre Brantford, a member of St. Joseph's Healthcare System, and Six Nations Polytechnic have teamed up to open one of Ontario’s first Indigenous living classrooms. In this simulated environment, learners gain hands-on experience with clinical best practices to develop the confidence and skills they need to succeed. The classroom provides new learning opportunities while enhancing the availability of culturally safe, appropriate care for Indigenous patients.

Hon. Nolan Quinn, Minister of Colleges and Universities, Six Nations Polytechnic and St. Joseph’s Health System leadership came together to officially open the new classroom and share the impacts it’s already having.

By introducing learners to Elders, families, instructors and frontline healthcare teams during their training, this approach strengthens workforce readiness and prepares graduates through experiential learning.
