BCHS was honoured to host Chef Rick Powless of Oneida of Thames First Nations as part of a new collaboration with Compass One Group to develop patient meals inspired by local Indigenous communities.

A limited menu of Indigenous patient meals is set to launch later this month with a full menu anticipated for Fall 2026.

This work reflects our commitment to meaningful engagement, and we remain open to receiving ongoing input from the Six Nations’ culinary community on bettering the Indigenous/First Nation patient experience.

What started with one child’s life-changing camp experience has grown into a powerful legacy of kindness, connection, and paying it forward. 💜

After attending Camp Huronda as a child living with Type 1 Diabetes, Cam Mulder knew he wanted other kids to experience the same sense of belonging and confidence he found there. “I had the opportunity to meet and connect with a ton of kids that were ‘like me’ and I hadn’t had that connection with others my age,” says Cam. Years later, he turned an unlikely fundraising idea — shaving off his signature moustache — into an opportunity that sent children from BCHS’ Diabetes Program to camp.

Now, nearly 10 years later, one of those campers is continuing the legacy.

Tiny cuddles, big benefits. 👐

This month, our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is proudly participating in the Canadian Premature Babies Foundation’s first-ever National Kangaroo-A-Thon — a friendly Canada-wide challenge encouraging neonatal units to promote Kangaroo Care (skin-to-skin contact) for babies and their families.

This initiative highlights the many benefits of skin-to-skin care for newborns, including supporting brain development, regulating temperature, improving sleep, and strengthening bonding. 👶 Even hand hugs count for babies who may not be able to cuddle just yet.

The benefits extend to parents too, helping with hormone regulation, increasing milk production, and empowering families in their parenting journey.

Every hour logged is a meaningful moment of comfort and healing for our tiniest patients.

And that’s a wrap on Nursing Week festivities! 💜

As we close out the week, we are grateful for the opportunity to celebrate the incredible nurses across BCHS. From life-changing moments of care to the small, meaningful gestures that bring comfort and compassion to patients each day, our nurses make a difference in countless ways.

We would like to thank all our vendors, community donors, event speakers, food trucks, especially Crazy Cravings Ice Cream, Indulge Ice Cream, BeaverTails, and Siggi’s Food Truck, along with the many teams who helped make this a special week for team BCHS. A huge shout-out to Domino’s Pizza who helped celebrate nursing week with free pizza for all staff across our hospitals! 🍕

This Nursing Week, we’re celebrating the journeys that begin with compassion and grow into lifelong impact. 💜

Meet Shawn Sandhu, a Registered Practical Nurse from our C7 (Palliative/Medically Complex Care) team, who is just over a year into his nursing career at BCHS. Inspired by a desire to help others and care for those in need, Shawn is continuing to build his skills, confidence, and passion every day.

“I’m looking forward to growing in my role and hopefully making a positive difference in the lives of our patients.”

Every nurse’s journey starts with a purpose—and we’re proud to support and celebrate each step along the way.

BCHS Introduces Clinical Roadmap for Community

Rooted in the 2025-2030 strategic plan, Leading Beyond Care, Brant Community Healthcare System (BCHS) recently launched a five‑year clinical services plan (CSP) focused on enhancing 11 clinical programs.

“With an emphasis on significantly improving our operations to provide even greater quality care for patients, the CSP challenges our entire organization to embrace the next generation of healthcare excellence for our community,” said Stuart Paavola, BCHS Vice-President, Clinical Services & Chief Nursing Executive.

A CSP is a strategic, long-term blueprint for healthcare organizations to define, develop, and deliver patient care services over a several year period. It aligns clinical programs with community needs, population growth, and resource sustainability to improve patient experience and outcomes. It also serves as a roadmap for optimizing services like emergency, diagnostics, and specialized programs.

This Nursing Week, we’re celebrating the journey of nurses like Angela Coleman—an Operating Room Registered Nurse who will mark 28 years at BCHS this September.✨

“Brantford is my hometown,” Angela shares. “I worked in a couple other hospitals first to gain experience, then I was fortunate to land a position where I was born and raised—Brantford was always where I wanted to be.”

From her early days to now, Angela’s passion for safe, compassionate care hasn’t changed, and her advice to the next generation says it all: “Never be afraid to ask questions or ask for help. Trust your gut. If something feels wrong with a patient, speak up and always take the time to be thorough and safe, rather than rushing. Once you gain the confidence, efficiency will follow."

To nurses just starting out and those who’ve dedicated decades, thank you for the care, courage, and commitment you bring every day.
