👁️ Why Are Your Eyes Sensitive to Light? Understanding Photophobia

As an ophthalmologist, I see many patients walk into my clinic complaining their eyes hurt under bright lights — sunlight, overhead office lamps, even phone screens can feel unbearable. This condition is called **photophobia (light sensitivity)**.

Photophobia is NOT a disease itself. It is a warning sign from your eyes.

✅ Common everyday triggers I see in my practice:
• Dry eyes & poor meibomian gland function: When your eyes lack enough quality tear film, your corneal surface becomes easily irritated. Bright light worsens stinging and discomfort.
• Eye fatigue from long screen‑time: Constant blue‑light exposure strains eye muscles, raising light sensitivity.
• Eye inflammation, conjunctivitis, corneal scratches.
• Migraines can also bring on sudden light sensitivity.

💡 Practical daily tips I recommend to my patients:

1. Wear quality UV‑blocking sunglasses outdoors, even on cloudy days.
2. Reduce screen glare; adjust monitor brightness to match your room lighting.
3. Give your eyes regular breaks. Follow the 20‑20‑20 rule.
4. Support your tear film health. Healthy meibomian glands equal more comfortable eyes under light.

Many people reach for traditional eye drops, but some cause brief stinging on sensitive eyes. Eyelid‑applied nano‑mist formulas can nourish the eye area without directly touching the cornea, great for people with light‑sensitive, easily‑irritated eyes.

Turning 40 and suddenly struggling to read small print? You are not alone. Presbyopia happens to nearly every one of us as we age.👓
Inside your eye, the natural lens is flexible when you are young, allowing you to shift focus between far‑away objects and close‑up text. As the decades go by, that lens slowly loses elasticity. It can no longer bend easily to focus on near tasks like phone screens, menus, or book pages.
Common signs of presbyopia:
🔹 Holding your phone or menu further away just to read the words
🔹 Eye fatigue after reading for a short time
🔹 Blurry near‑vision, especially in dim lighting
🔹 Difficulty switching quickly between near and far vision
This is a normal aging change, not an eye disease. It is not caused by too much screen time, though screens can make the tired‑eye feeling worse.
What you can do:
✅ Get a comprehensive eye exam. Simple reading glasses or prescription updates work for most people.
✅ Increase lighting when reading. Good lighting takes lots of strain off your eyes.
✅ Follow the 20‑20‑20 rule to reduce overall eye fatigue.

Do your eyes feel gritty, burning, or exhausted by late afternoon? You may be living with dry eye syndrome.
Screen time is one big trigger. When we stare at phones and computers, we blink far less often. Age‑related hormone shifts also lower natural tear production.
Dry eye is more than just minor discomfort. Severe dryness can cause temporary blurry vision and interfere with reading, driving and daily work.
Simple practical tips I share with my patients:
✅ Follow the 20‑20‑20 rule for screen use
✅ Run a humidifier in dry indoor spaces
✅ Choose preservative‑free artificial tears if you use drops many times per day

Do your eyes get dry after long hours on screens? Drop a comment.

Every week in clinic, patients walk in worried about floaters.
Many describe tiny dots, thread‑like shadows drifting across their vision, especially noticeable against bright walls or a clear blue sky.
Most floaters come from normal aging. The gel‑like substance inside our eyeball slowly breaks down over time. Small particles form and cast shadows on the retina, creating those spots you see. For most people, they are harmless.
🚨 Know your emergency warning signs:
Sudden massive increase in floaters
New flashing lights in your vision
A shadow or curtain sliding over part of your sight
These may mean a retinal tear or retinal detachment. Seek urgent eye care right away.
Mild harmless floaters often become less noticeable over time as your brain adapts.
